Celebrating Year of 80th Birthday and 50th Anniversary

  • 5 of 5

This is a very beautiful home and met every desire we wanted. We had the home from April 2 to April 10, 2016 to celebrate my 80th birthday and the Year of my wife's and my 50th Anniversary. We were 8 adults and 7 grandchildren and had gone to Kona Village Resort (KVR) since 1975 when our two oldest children were 7 and 4, and revisited KVR many time until the Japanese Tohoku Tsunami destroyed it. This was the 1st return to the Hawaiian Islands since 2011 for our collective family. We wanted to try and re-create our own version of what we liked - and did so here at Hanalei Hono Hale! We arranged with KauaiOno for a chef to come in. They had 4 nights available and we grabbed them. We enjoy all foods so told them that the 1st night we just wanted a "Pupus Themed" dinner as both Big and Little kids would be too excited to sit for a more formal dinner. It was perfect, especially with the wonderfull outside Bar/Gazebo that easily seated 10 and the little kids used the tables adjacent under the balcony when they were not out in the spacious yard. Adam was our Chef and Darron his assistant. We could not have been more pleased with what they provided. From that moment on we said, "just surprise us - we like Fish, Island Pig, etc."We had wonderful dinners with the kitchen left spotless and plenty of leftovers which they packaged and put into the fridge. We only went out 1 night to the Tahiti Nuiu Luau- a short walk from the house - low key, fun and a good example of a luau without "Hollywood". The jacuzzi saw constant action from the kids and was close enough to the outside "Bar" that we could easily oversee them. We cooked steaks and fresh fish out doors. There was no reason to leave such a wonderful site to eat elsewhere. We used paddle boards from the house and rented a few for the more proficient surfers. Walks in the morning and evening on the beach just thru the gate in the hedge in front of us which provided privacy. Only private homes were around us so the beach in front was practically ours alone. The outside Bar is a gem to use and makes this location particularly special - I don't believe any other home on the beach had anything like it. We used it constantly.

Perfect home for a perfect vacation!

  • 5 of 5

This home is absolutely stunning. The location and amenities are wonderful. The owner truly thought of every detail to make one's stay comfortable and fun. Every day we marveled at the view and couldn't wait to hit the beach located just outside the backyard...especially with all the beach toys the owner made available to us during our stay (paddle bards, surf boards and boogie boards). Thank you for making our vacation one of the best!

Wonderful Experience in fabulous home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the home in December 2015 and had a fabulous experience. Ourselves, 6 adult children, and one infant. Probably the nicest vacation home we have ever stayed in. Beautifully decorated, comfortable beds, great technology, fabulous views, on the beach, great kitchens, close to everything! Had a great vacation. Enjoyed many fun things: surfing, lounging, helicopters, golf, kayaking, tubing, and catamaran sail. Thanks for a great time. M&P

Manages to be luxurious, comfortable and fun all at the same time

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect home in an incredible location. We were an extended family of eight, over two generations, with different members looking for different things in a vacation -- and all couldn't have been more pleased. We had the adventurers, borrowing the surf boards, SUPs and boogie boards every day, even at odd hours, for the walk across the lovely lawn and right onto the beach, including for paddles across the bay and up two different rivers. We had the loungers, who rotated from the upper terrace view, to the hanging couch in the shade, the hammock and hot tub, and of course the beach right out back. We had the shoppers and golfers who appreciated the easy access to everything (while those above seemed not to realize there was a cute little town a short walk away...). And maybe happiest was the cook, grilling a fresh fish from the local market each night, and serving it with veggies, rice and wine on the upper screened-in dining room -- and of course making pizza one afternoon in the dedicated oven in the backyard tiki house (seriously). He approvingly noted that the kitchen equipment was high-quality and extensive.

This whole crew got along swimmingly, as there's lots of great space to be together -- whether the upper living room and terrace, lower den and patio, lawn, beach and that beautiful warm Halanlei Bay water -- but also wonderful private space to retreat to for quiet time (assignment of bedrooms was easy, as they were all beautiful and convenient).

This was more than a vacation -- it was an opportunity for a family to bond across generations over together-time and common interests, while still pursuing individual versions of fun. And to make it all easy, Denise is a delight, and Crystal is like having a local friend. We're all grateful for the opportunity to have shared this home, and we're already booked to do it again this coming year!

Great place

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 18 had a great time with this Hanalei home being the center of our gathering. It was so much better than a hotel where we would have all been in separate rooms and rarely eating or seeing each other. We loved it! Thank you Denise!

Owner's Response: Lisa, This is our little piece of paradise and we designed it for our large family so that we could all be together when we wanted and then have enough space to have some quiet time too. So happy that you and your family enjoyed your stay at our home in Kauai. Mahalo, Denise

About Denise DuBarry Hay

Our family has been visiting Kauai for 8 years and decided that we wanted to spend more time here. We looked for the right home all over the north shore for over 4 years before we bought this one. We spend most of our time here but we do go back to our second home in California for 5-6 months every year.

Denise DuBarry Hay purchased this estate in 2011

Why Denise DuBarry Hay chose Hanalei

Having children that range in age from 14 to 30, we wanted our home to be in the center of a wide variety of activities that could be accessed by walking or biking. This house is ideally located on Hanalei Bay, a 5 minute walk will get you into the center of Hanalei town, a 15 minute walk to the pier and the Hanalei River and world class surfing right outside the door (during the winter months). We have spent the last couple of years completely remodeling the home and the 1 acre of land it sits on. The house has a deep lot on a wide and deep beach with a maze of ironwood shrubs that kids love to play in. Did you see the film 'The Descendants' with George Clooney? If you did, you saw our beach.

What makes this estate unique

We remodeled this home with total comfort and beauty in mind. When you first arrive at the gate, the lava rock wall isn't just any wall, it's full of artisan mosaics with fantastical sea life. Yard art from Bali peppers the landscape and makes you feel that you are at an exclusive resort.

Let's face it, we want to be spoiled here at the beach. Every room has a big screen television and there's turbo internet throughout the house. There are lots of areas to sit and play. A screened in upstairs lanai, outdoor full kitchen and tiki bar which seats 10, jacuzzi, a cushioned teak porch swing with a view of the ocean, a ping pong/pool table, outdoor shower and an outdoor massage table and, in our opinion, the best beach on the planet make this place feel like you've found paradise.
