A comfortable 1 bed annex set in a wooded valley next to the Gwendraeth river
The annex has one bedroom, bathroom with shower over, kitchen / living room and is idea for a couple taking a break away from it all. The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans and utensils making it an ideal 'home from home' - previous guests have commented on the kitchen facilities. The holiday accommodation adjoins the owners property and sits in a 2 acre smallholding. We have chickens, goats and bees, plus grow vegetables and fruit. The property sits in a wooded valley with the river Gwendraeth Fach fronting the land. Originally a pump house, built by the MOD in 1939 to pump water down to an ammunition factory at Pembrey, it was bought and completely renovated by developers in 2007 in a contemporary modern style. We bought the property in 2009, and have spent our time organising the land into formal gardens near the house, putting in out buildings and outside lighting, paths and seating areas for our guests to enjoy the wonderful outside ambiance. The historic town of Kidwelly is close by and visitors can enjoy exploring the Norman castle and Industrial Museum.
Kidwelly area: The Kidwelly area offers many attractions. Kidwelly itself has a medieval castle and old priory church in the centre of the town, whilst the industrial museum is just outside at Mynddygarreg. The yearly carnival is held in July, whilst the castle offers medieval attractions throughout the summer. For the walkers there are a number of walks around Kidwelly, plus the Millenium coastal path.
Not far from Kidwelly is Pembrey Country Park and Ffos Las Racecourse all offering a variety of activities throughout the year.
The Royal Botanical Gardens and Aberglasney house and gardens are both short drives away.
Other attractions within an hours drive include Dylan Thomas' boathouse at Laugharne; National Wetlands Centre at Llanelli; Narberth and Carmarthen towns are also worth a visit.
Carmarthenshire: Carmarthenshire is known as 'the garden of Wales'. It has lush rural landscapes, beautiful coastlines and interesting towns. The area is steeped in history and mythology. It has so many places to visit and things to do you will want to come back for more.
From the Pumphouse: We have seen Buzzards, Dippers and Kingfishers on a regular basis from the Pumphouse grounds, plus the occasional Red Kite.
We own around 150 yards of river frontage and fishermen can therefore enjoy the fishing rights (subject to individual license) that comes with the property. Sea fishing is also good locally.
Otters have been seen in the river.

Paul and Cathy moved to Kidwelly to enjoy a quieter life; not to put our feet up, but to have a complete change of scene and indulge ourselves in learning new skills and have an adventure. Paul has enjoyed working outside, making paths, out buildings, gates and seating areas, whilst Cathy has enjoyed gardening, bee keeping, goats, chickens, spinning, knitting, preserving, soap making and trying other craft activiites
Cathy purchased this Cottage in 2009
Why Cathy chose Kidwelly
The area is unique - we are not far from a main road but because we are in a wooded valley we very rarely hear any traffic. There is lots of wild life to watch and listen to and you get engulfed in the peace and tranquility of the area. It is an ideal place to relax and unwind.
What makes this Cottage unique
If you are really brave, you can take a dip in the river, up by the bridge. The water is clear and deep and quite invigorating!

Small - but absolutely perfectly formed!
We enjoyed a very warm and comfortable short stay at the annexe. The apartment was spotlessly clean and I have never stayed in such a well provisioned holiday let - everything you could possibly need was provided, and a thoughtful welcome pack meant you didn't need to take any 'essentials'. Although not far from the road, as soon as you drive down the lane to the property it is like entering another world - the sounds of the river and birds (including the beguiling hens!) being all you can hear. The bed was comfortable and the feather duvet snuggly! There are some interesting places to visit nearby - and good walks to stretch the legs. Cathy was so welcoming and helpful, from the very first email onwards. We would whole heartedly recommend the annexe and hope to return. Thank you!
Lovely short break away
Perfect accommodation for a short break. Everything you can need - very well equipped.
Lovely position by the river, very quiet & relaxing
A world of its own.
The Annexe was exactly as described and anticipated. Its setting however was quite unique, and a wonderful discovery. Everything was spotlessly clean and the on-site hosts very welcoming and helpful. Much thought had gone into making a stay comfortable and easy for visitors, and the "welcome pack" provided was the best we have ever encountered in many years of staying in many self-catering holiday homes. Very conveniently situated as a base for walking the Wales Coast Path.
Thank you for writing such a wonderful review. We really appreciate your comments and very much enjoyed your stay with us.
The perfect hideaway
We were visiting family over Christmas and there just wasnt room for all of us and our dog at the family house, so we happened upon the Annex!
Cathy and her partner made us feel so welcome and the place was just what we needed - a comfortable and warm hideaway. Stripes, the whippet would also like to recommend the underfloor heating.
We hope to visit again soon. M xxx
We really enjoyed having you to stay and so glad Stripes enjoyed the underfloor heating!!
Clean, modern facilities, beautiful surroundings
Upon arrival Cathy was most welcoming, she showed us round and we met their lovely dogs. Everything we could need was thought of and provided, including some essential food items, plus welsh cakes and fruit. Inside is small but well laid out so space was never an issue. We felt immediately relaxed in the beautiful surroundings with dogs, chickens, goats, cats and lots of birds and butterflies. On the evenings we liked to sit outside and light the chiminea whilst relaxing with a drink and watching the wildlife. We watched a wild red kite flying over on one evening. Another day from our bedroom window we saw a woodpecker alongside the other birds on the bird-feeders. It was lovely to explore the grounds with benches in lots of places to encourage us to stop and relax and enjoy the views. Time passed by so quickly that we hardly found time to explore Wales, but came away feeling totally chilled out and ready to return to reality. We will most definitely be back.
We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and thank you for writing such a lovely review.
Peaceful and Beautiful Setting with Lovely Owners
This review is well overdue, for which I can apologise! My husband and I stayed here last year for our honeymoon. It was perfect for what we wanted - a peaceful, secluded and beautiful getaway with plenty of places to wander. The annexe itself was lovely - very clean and had everything we needed. One thing we both picked up on was how everything we needed was there for when we first arrived and just wanted to chill for a bit - including milk, eggs, tea, coffee.... all the important stuff. And some Welsh cakes!
Both Cathy and Paul were extremely welcoming and very friendly and approachable. At the same time, it also felt like we were completely on our own , which was nice.
The grounds around the house and annexe are beautiful (which Cathy and Paul should be proud of) and full of both 2 and 4 legged friends to visit on a spare afternoon!
The river can be seen from the patio area and is so calming to listen to whilst sat outside with a glass of wine and the fire burning away.
The location is also very good. There are walking routes outside the door and everywhere we wanted to visit was a short drive away.
Overall, we were both extremely pleased with our stay here. We would definitely recommend and definitely revisit.
Thank you Zoe and Edward for such a lovely review - we are so glad you enjoyed your stay.
