Hello My name is Gary, I live on site and manage this rental. Myself or the on site manager are generally available during the day, and anytime should there be a problem by phone.
Great to meet new guests, and give them a place to stay here in Beautiful San Diego.
gary purchased this apartment in 1997
Location, Location, this small unit has a nice large yard, in the center of downtown a block from Balboa park, easy access to everything, a perfect jumping off spot for someone who wants to visit San Diego. Parking available at no charge, quiet top of hill location.
This is a smaller unit but has a great yard, it has air conditioning for the summer days, but san diego is nice year round, and the outdoor space here is great. You cannot get this level of privacy and space in a hotel. Garden surroundings with superior access to all.
We stayed 5 nights at this property which is in a great area of San Diego. Although the apartment itself was small it was comfortable and met all our needs, and the large patio with table and hammock offset the lack of room inside. It was very private, so were able to sit outside in the morning for breakfast and again in the evening after long days of exploring San Diego. There were jets flying into the nearby airport, but that would be an issue in any area close to downtown given its proximity to the airport, anyway we got used to them and they did not disturb us at night, although earplugs may be a good idea for some. We did not have a car, and found the location to be perfect for walking to Downtown, Little Italy and super easy access to Balboa Park and the zoo.The apartment is at the crest of a hill, but we did not find that to be an impediment. Both Gary and Frank were easy and pleasant to communicate with. We would recommend this unit to singles or couples. It is great for people who want to explore San Diego without a car and don't mind walking.
Wonderful experience from the beginning to end. Gary is very responsive and a great communicator, keeping us informed and up to date on the status of our rental. He is flexible in that he allowed us an early check-in since no-one was in the unit the morning we arrived. It is in a wonderful neighborhood that is walking distance to downtown, the Gas lamp district, Little Italy and Balboa Park. While it is downhill to everywhere but Balboa Park we would recommend taking Uber back to the cottage due to the steepness of the climb back.
The studio is comfortable for two people but it would be crowded for more than two as there is no couch and the bed is a double bed. The bathroom can accommodate one at the sink and one in the shower at the same time and features on-demand hot water so give it a few seconds to reach the sink and shower. We happened to come during an unusually warm early October (90's) but there were three fans including the ceiling fan to keep us comfortable. The kitchen had ample supplies and dishes for our use, we actually cooked and ate many of our meals at the studio, dining in the yard at the patio table.
We had a pleasurable trip to San Diego and can truly say most of the reason is attributable to Gary and his wonderful studio. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. It is a great value in a great location with a great owner!!!
This place is tiny, but it was perfect for my husband and I over a long weekend. The kitchen needs a couple more things, salt and pepper, oven mitts and a kitchen sponge but otherwise this place was great. I would have also liked to receive the check-in information more than two days in advance. Would definitely stay here again if I was heading to San Diego.
I work in hillcrest and i rented this place while my partner visited. Its a nice biking distance to most places in the area. close to balboa park. Great backyard to enjoy a morning breakfast. Beautiful cozy array of plants and trees. I had given my partner a bouque of flowers, and was happily surprised to find an empty vase in rhe kitchen. towels and grill and pots all a +++
only thing missing was Salt and Pepper.-
Early in the morning upstairs neighboors baby playing around at about 9am for about 20min. No Biggie. No Crying.
Didn't bother us. Just a heads up
Maintance people chatting it up early in the morning for a good while outside. Not cool. There is a 4 spot paver right outside the back entrance where you can park.+++ Also i was very skeptikal after i made my first payment. And even more worried when the owner took more than a couple days to reply. Finally after a couple weeks i managed to meet the owner and have a look at the apartment. I was very blown away. I had no idea how big the backyard complete with grill and hammock and table was. Also I was told it was all for us only.+++
Then I realized why the price seemed a bit high. I will definately love to stay here again. I would suggest to meet with the owner at the apartment as soon as possible. You may just fall in love with the place immedieatly after.
This place is close to downtown San Diego (I would say, within walking distance) and is in a relatively quiet neighborhood.
1. Giovanni (the contact for this place) was polite and responsive.
2. The outside area is beautiful, with plants, trees, a BBQ, a hammock.
3. The inside is small but nicely decorated.
1. No bathroom towels or kitchen towels. I travel with my own, but I think some people may not.
2. Parking around this area is not free - you need a residential pass. I believe you can get a non-resident's pass from the city. I didn't bother to look into this but I did see it on several cars.
3. I would suggest to the owners that whatever work needs to be done around the unit (gardening/planting/maintenance) be done quietly and at a reasonable hour. This initially was an issue, but after I voiced my concerns, it was a much better situation. I will say again that Giovanni was responsive and showed a willingness to make the situation work for me.
4. I was able to get the internet to work, but they need to fix this - have a clearly labeled information sheet and figure out which network is the correct one! It's simply a matter of naming the airport express that is in the unit, so that's it's obvious which is the right network.
the space was very small and minimally equipped. I travel a fair amount and use a lot of vrbos. this one didn't have basic kitchen equipment, like a sponge or dishtowel. it didn't have basic spices like salt or pepper. I wasn't able to cook. The shower in the bathroom was a bit leaky, but that wasn't a major problem because water evaporated pretty quickly. Also, they didn't have good basic cable and the internet NEVER WORKED! I called the contact several times and each time was given wrong information about how to access their network. That was the biggest problem since I had work I needed to do. The courtyard in the back is actually quite nice. That was a bright spot.
Cortez is located Just off of two freeways atop a hill, so it has easy access to the entire city, The property is just across the bridge over I-5 to Balboa Park, (larger than Central Park) Really a good location to have as a base when exploring San Diego, About a 10-minute drive to shopping centers, beaches, SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo.
