About: I am a military widow with six kids. When my husband was killed on a mission, we needed a place to heal and begin our lives anew. We took a family vote, and all wanted to move to Big Island, where our cousins lived. I grew up in Yosemite National Park, and Hawaii Island has the same magnificent natural beauty and sacred nature, with fresh air and water, and beautiful hiking trails. With all of the different climate zones and cultural diversity, we could spend our time learning and exploring. Hawaii worked its magic, and the kids grew to be people who cared for the aina (land), and others. Most of the kids are grown and living on the mainland, but still come 'home' to recapture the peace of their childhoods. We are so honored to be able to share our homes with guests who come to experience amazing Big Island and the special turquoise waters and trade winds of Kawaihae. I always feel like the luckiest person on earth when I walk through the front door, and hope you will too!
Why Waimea, Hawaii County, HI, USA:
The house felt like a refuge the moment I saw it, and the young owner had put in alot of loving touches, like rock walls and patios, and a fragrant cedar walk-in closet. It took many years to afford the upgrades and artistic touches, and each has been a labor of love for me, as well. My uncle was a volcanologist, and chose the location of Kawaihae Village because it was above tsunami danger, and out of the way of thousands of years of lava flows. It is a safe perch, yet close enough to the ocean to see a humpback whale breach from the yard. You can lie in a chase at night and see a brilliant night sky, the way it looked before city lights clouded the atmosphere. In the morning, you can be at a pristing beach where the hotel guests pay upwards of $700 a night, and the houses cost millions - the drive down the hill takes a couple of minutes! It is a great, time-saving location, and even the paramedic's station is less than 5 miles away. The house has lent itself to green considerations - repurposing things like an antique cabinet into the bar, recycling wood during renovations, and a move to solar power. We try to care naturally for the land and have been rewarded by native birds (our birder guests counted 34 species!) and butterflies. We hope you feel the joyful and healing nature of this house we call Hali Lani, 'House of Heaven'.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The location of this house means that you can drive to the beach on a moment's notice. We often go first thing in the morning, and again to watch the sunset, or the whales in winter. We are also spoiled with the closeness of world-class restaurants (yes, you can go in shorts and aloha shirts!), and fantastic shopping. I was able to buy the house next door in the hope that my Mom would live there, as it had been her college dream to move to Hawaii. She spent her last summer there, and said it was the happiest time of her life. With two houses side by side, it is extremely convenient for families or groups of friends to rent both. I love to cook, so had a convection oven installed when we remodeled, and try to buy good pots, pans, knives and have some spices on hand. The mosaics in the house tell stories and are a tribute to Big Island and the unique rocks and flowers. The yard has monumental plumeria trees, so you often wake to a carpet of blossoms that the winds have blown down onto the grass. We keep the prices affordable because as a mother of six, I know that vacation dollars are often scarce. We wish you a wonderful stay, and may you feel cherished and welcome in Hale Lani and Hale Ohia! Aloha nui loa.
