About tracee

I am the Great-granddaughter of Gus and Anna Spitzmiller, who arrived in Grand Lake in the early 1900's. Gus first mined gold and silver with the famous Squeaky Bob Wheeler, at Lulu City, and then became a Master plumber for the village of Grand Lake. His wife, Anna, was the 1st to have running water in Grand County. I was raised here--at 8400+ feet-- and educated at Kent-Denver Country Day in Denver. I am now a retired attorney, rebuilding and renovating my family property in G.L., and fishing in Baja in the Winters.

tracee purchased this house in 1970

Why tracee chose Grand Lake

My Grandmother Barbara Spitzmiller, who married Gordon Spitzmiller ( Gus and Anna's son) used to own a dairy farm that covered this property and stretched across what is now Shadow Mountain Lake. When they made Shadow Mountain Reservoir, all of a sudden, Grandma owned the most beautiful lake and river front property around. It didn't really ever make up for the fact that they took her land to build a lake, but we love it, as the generations pass! She gave the double lot this house sits on to my Dad, as a kid, because it was his favorite spot for fishing, and it constituted the best 2 lots around. The home faces the Colo. river where it enters Shadow Mountain lake, that connects to Grand Lake, via a channel. After he married, he built this house. As kids we helped gather every stone on all 3 floor- to- ceiling rock fireplaces. The upstairs, i.e. the main section, is what is available for rent. It is divided now with a wood floor over the staircase for privacy--and on-site managers in an apt. downstairs. Looking out the floor to ceiling picture windows on the entire lake side of the house ( but especially the picture windows from the Master bed), makes you forget it still needs exterior paint, back-side ( non-lake-side) some landscaping and some new flooring ( under those Persian rugs, etc.). This place is truly special and incomparable in view or location. Come take advantage of the 1/2 price rates until next year when all the 'Pretty-up' is done.

What makes this house unique

The view, the floor to ceiling windows, the floor to ceiling rock fireplaces, the huge deck--and the view!!! fully remodeled--new floor coverings--hardwood, really fine carpets, antiques, etc.

The free firewood, and canoes.

The wildlife viewing, and canoeing, fishing, boating, hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, etc.

Did I mention the view? ha. Ha.

Comfort with an awesome view!

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed here in spring, summer and winter. Each season has its own special welcome. Here in the winter, I a Californian, get the full Hallmark bueatyful Christmas scene. I woke up this morning and made my way into the kitchen to make cappuccino. On the way to the machine ,I look across a frozen lake to the beauty of Rocky Mountain national Park. Everything is covered in snow and real icicles hanging from the roof. From the moment you arrive in this home, you are surrounded by art, comfortable furniture, well stocked kitchen . . . You feel like you are home. The caretaker, Katie, is a jewel. In town there is everything from fine food, a charming book store, interesting shopping or rent a snowmobile . . . Or skies for cross country travel. I will be back.

Very nice and relaxing. Caitie, the on-site house manager, was great and very helpful. Available any time we needed something or had a question. House was very large and had a washer and dryer which was a life saver.

Great location and views! Comfy :)

Thanks so much for lending us your lake home.

I love the character of this home. It truly feels cozy. The artwork and books and comfortable furniture made it a very relaxing place for my family (grandma, mom, dad, 3 teen boys). The view was outstanding. The view from the master bedroom is particularly cool to wake up to each morning. The kitchen had everything we needed - plenty of pots, pans, and dishes to make it easy to cook for everyone. The beds were comfortable. I know another review mentioned the pull out mattress in the couch. It was normal for that type of bed.

I would add that if you're there in the winter, the Grand Lake Nordic Center is awesome and less than a ten minute drive away. Free sledding for the kids, and miles of trails for snowshoeing/cross-country skiing for the cost of a pass (and they provide rentals).

A couple items to mention. The bunk beds worked great for us, but they are in a hallway. It doesn't feel like they're in a room. Also, there is only one shower. The master toilet and main toilet are connected by that shower. We made it work, but I wanted to make sure future guests understood that.

All in all, I would go back. Especially in the summer, with that great access to the lake and the public islands and the fishing. It was a great trip!
