About tracee

I am the Great-granddaughter of Gus and Anna Spitzmiller, who arrived in Grand Lake in the early 1900's. Gus first mined gold and silver with the famous Squeaky Bob Wheeler, at Lulu City, and then became a Master plumber for the village of Grand Lake. His wife, Anna, was the 1st to have running water in Grand County. I was raised here--at 8400+ feet-- and educated at Kent-Denver Country Day in Denver. I am now a retired attorney, rebuilding and renovating my family property in G.L., and fishing in Baja in the Winters.

tracee purchased this house in 1970

Why tracee chose Grand Lake

My Grandmother Barbara Spitzmiller, who married Gordon Spitzmiller ( Gus and Anna's son) used to own a dairy farm that covered this property and stretched across what is now Shadow Mountain Lake. When they made Shadow Mountain Reservoir, all of a sudden, Grandma owned the most beautiful lake and river front property around. It didn't really ever make up for the fact that they took her land to build a lake, but we love it, as the generations pass! She gave the double lot this house sits on to my Dad, as a kid, because it was his favorite spot for fishing, and it constituted the best 2 lots around. The home faces the Colo. river where it enters Shadow Mountain lake, that connects to Grand Lake, via a channel. After he married, he built this house. As kids we helped gather every stone on all 3 floor- to- ceiling rock fireplaces. The upstairs, i.e. the main section, is what is available for rent. It is divided now with a wood floor over the staircase for privacy--and on-site managers in an apt. downstairs. Looking out the floor to ceiling picture windows on the entire lake side of the house ( but especially the picture windows from the Master bed), makes you forget it still needs exterior paint, back-side ( non-lake-side) some landscaping and some new flooring ( under those Persian rugs, etc.). This place is truly special and incomparable in view or location. Come take advantage of the 1/2 price rates until next year when all the 'Pretty-up' is done.

What makes this house unique

The view, the floor to ceiling windows, the floor to ceiling rock fireplaces, the huge deck--and the view!!! fully remodeled--new floor coverings--hardwood, really fine carpets, antiques, etc.

The free firewood, and canoes.

The wildlife viewing, and canoeing, fishing, boating, hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, etc.

Did I mention the view? ha. Ha.

Beautiful views, location was great. House was comfortable-and well equipt

  • 4 of 5

Well equipt and layout worked well for us.

Fold out bed was terrible (but they all are) and upper bunk tough for adults. Heat was either not working or very inefficient. But overall we enjoyed our time there and views could not be beat.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. The sofa bed is new and was very expensive. They promised me that was because it's comfortable. I am so sorry and will be adding a 3" foam topper to it. We are working on the heat issue. The home has steam heat that comes from the baseboard heaters, but with the 12' ceilings it takes awhile to heat the house. The system adds moisture to the air which is lovely in such a dry climate, but right now we are adding large space heaters to each room to speed up the process. We are also implementing a new system whereby the on-site caretaker turns the heat up the day before each arrival. We sure hope that solves these issues and we thank you for your comments and thoughts. Tracee/owner

Amazing Owner and Incredible location

  • 5 of 5

The owner is so amazing! I had accidentally reserved another house for the wrong dates. However, I didn't realize it until I emailed the owner to see if we could check in earlier. She immediately responded to let me know that she had our reservation scheduled for the following month (my mistake completely). For most situations, that would have been the end of it, not for Tracee. Luckily this house was available and she offered, without me even asking, to let us stay in this home. I couldn't believe it. It was completely my mistake, but she made sure we had a great place to stay. I couldn't be more grateful!

The house was fabulous, the views are incredible and it is a great location at the intersection of the River and Shadow Mountain lake. From the master bedroom, you have the most incredible view greeting you each morning. The flowers on the property are absolutely stunning and we often were greeted by hummingbirds who came to enjoy them.

We spent a ton of time on the deck, looking for wildlife, relaxing and enjoying the view. While we only used the master bedroom, the bed was super comfy and the sheets were so amazing!!! I would love to get the same sheets for my home they were incredibly luxurious.

We found ourselves seldom leaving because it was such a great place to be that we wanted to soak it all up by staying around the property.

Great place, great location, thank you so much Tracee!!!

Our perfect vacation at Grand Lake

  • 5 of 5

We are from Germany visiting the USA. We wanted to see the Rocky Mountains. We selected to stay in Grand Lake, next to the Rocky Mountain National Park.

We stayed four nights in this cozy lake house. From the first time we stepped into the lake house it was everything that we expected! The rooms were very clean. The house has an absolutely beautiful view from the balcony, same in the master bedroom. You'll literally wake up to a gorgeous sunrise over the grand lake including the mountains. We enjoyed our evenings in front of the big fireplace which can be seen from the living room and the family room. Tracee provided us with plenty of shampoos, lotions, shower gels, and everything what you can think of. Katie, the property manager, was always available if we needed something. We had lots of fun with the canoes at the little pier in front of the lake house which were free to use! We didn’t see moose at the lake house, but we did inside the Rocky Mountain National Park.

Thank you, Tracee for a great visit in USA.

The place was in a beautiful location and had everything me needed.

  • 5 of 5

We went with my extended family which includes three kids under three. The place was complete with a small kids table, lots of toys and boats for all of us to go out on the water. The master bedroom is particular was beautiful with its large picture window and very comfortable bed. I would recommend this place to anyone.

My 5 Star Getaway

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed in this lake home before, and I love it. I don’t want to simply echo what other reviewers have said, so I will try to keep it simple. This home has a very cozy, warm feeling, as one would expect from a home in Grand Lake, Colorado. It has a “country western” indoor atmosphere. I particularly like the stone fireplace. It opens to the living room on one side and to the family room on the opposite side…very nice. And as advertised, there is plenty of firewood. The fireplace stone accent is carried up and becomes a wall, again very nice. The outside deck patio is adorned with several well-kept hanging flower baskets, all in bloom…very pretty. And yes, the deck has an unobstructed view of the Northern Colorado River pouring into Shadow Mountain Lake. It’s the best place to have your favorite beverage, snack, book or all three, and watch Mother Nature do her thing. Canoes were available which I definitely used to enjoy paddling around the lake. The kitchen has all one needs to cook. It also has an espresso/cappuccino machine. How many times are you going to find that in an alpine lake front home? I found the beds to be just fine. Beds are subjective to personal preference, so others may not agree. On all previous visits I was fortunate to enjoy seeing moose walk through the yard and sometimes walk/swim across the river/lake. This time…no moose. But moose are on their time…not mine. However, a couple trips into the Rocky Mountain National Park (just minutes away) provided ample moose and elk viewing. One more comment, Cattie (spelling?) the property caretaker was very helpful, making sure we were comfortable at all times.

In summary, if you just want to get away and unwind, recharge your batteries, relax, and enjoy nature…this is the place. It’s my 5 star get away…and I love it.
