About Onaona Maly

Born and raised in Hawai'i all my life. Native Hawaiian. Family involved in historic preservation on the Island of Lāna'i and throughout Hawai'i

Onaona Maly purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Onaona Maly chose Lanai

In 1923 when James Dole initiated design and construction of Lāna‘i City as a part of the Hawaiian Pineapple Company’s Lāna‘i Plantation, several classes of residences were built. In the city two and three bedroom homes were built for families, generally on lots of about 3,000 to 4,000 square feet. Single men who worked on the plantation were provided rooms and board in boarding houses which were occurred on various blocks throughout the city. On the hill overlooking the city, the plantation manager’s house, and houses built for management staff and professionals were built. These “management” residences all had a main house, a detached garage and laundry room, and a guest house. The lots ranged in size from a quarter acre to just under one acre.

The home situated at 452 ‘Ōhi‘a Place, is one of the later management homes built on Lāna‘i, and is part of a group of 15 homes of the same design, built in 1948. The house sits on nearly one-half acre of land, which is buffered by plantings up to 30 feet high on three sides (north, east and west), and by ‘Ōhi‘a Place on the south.

The homes on the hill (formerly known as “Haole Camp”) have always hosted guests to the island. And following World War II, when a public hunting program was initiated by the Territory (later State) of Hawai‘i, families throughout Lāna‘i city hosted both personal guests and visitors during hunting seasons. The use of Lāna‘i homes as a place where visitors were welcomed, is a practice that dates back more than 60 years. While payment was not always asked, the guests always brought food and items not generally available on Lāna‘i, or paid for the boarding. Many families supplemented their income by renting rooms for short term visits.

This one-half acre property offers the comforts of a Lāna'i home. Peaceful.

What makes this cottage unique

Located on hill above Lāna'i City. Large property, peaceful and quiet. At night it's very dark, sometimes you may hear deer barking and during the day see turkeys run through the yard.

Property is located in location that was referred to in the plantation days as "Haole Camp."

Delightful people, delightful o'hana

  • 5 of 5

Kēpa and Onaona Malyʻs oʻhana on Lanai is an ideal place from which to explore the island. They are a wealth of kindness and knowledge, intelligent and gracious. Their place is up out of Lanai City just a bit, a short walk to the Blue Ginger Cafe and bakery, Richards grocery store (which has a surprising depth and breadth of offerings), and the Lanai Cultural and Heritage Center, a must visit and first stop before exploring the island. Their property is lovely and quiet. We were there for four nights, and had the opportunity to scratch the surface of this wild and history-rich island. You wake up each morning to the wind in the trees and a sky that takes the morning sun as only the tropics can. Lanai has a beauty and mystery, no kidding, if your heart is just a bit open. If you visit Lanai, stay at their oʻhana.

The Best Kept Secret!

  • 5 of 5

This was probably the best kept secret when we came back to Honolulu and told our friends they said they never heard of this place. I'm kind of regretting telling them!!!

The property was pristine and the air was so clean and crisp! The property was very well maintained and although we didn't use most of the amenities in the house it was stacked with all types of kitchenware, internet, maps, coolers, etc. A true gem on this island. NOT the ideal set-up for hunters, although we don't hunt, but most of our friends do who come here.

We will definitely be returning with the assumption that we will be competing with way more guests once the word gets out! Grocery shop in town at Richards Market and cook all your meals in this place.

Easy in/easy out! So convenient!

Better than the Four Seasons

  • 5 of 5

We can't say enough amazing things about our stay. Onaona and Kepa could not be any more helpful and sweet during our short stay. Their rental, a perfect distance from their home, was surprisingly large and well stocked with everything we needed. The place was super clean and comfortable. We used a number of the books and pamphlets (and a great map) to get around during our stay. The bed was comfortable and the extra blankets were great since it was a bit cooler than we expected in the higher elevation of Lanai City. The neighborhood was really quiet and just a short walk to Dole Park, the center of Lanai's business area. Onaona could not have been more helpful with tips on where to dine and what to see. We had a great time on Lanai and staying here really made that possible. Seriously, if we went back to Lanai with a bucket of cash, we would still stay here.

Quality construction, peaceful location and gracious hosts

  • 5 of 5

Waking to the gentle sound of a passing shower. Caring and kind hosts who checked in only enough to be sure all was well. Privacy. Gorgeous wood ceilings. Attention to details. Small but adequate kitchen nicely stocked. Close to Lanai City but up the hill in the big trees. Pretty yard with paved walkway to cottage. We will be back!
