About Wendi Gardner
We are recent transplants from Seattle, WA. The sun and friends drew us to this area. We love the desert and are excited to experience the environs. Joel is a Professor of Architecture and Wendi's career is in health care management, specifically child psychiatry.
Wendi Gardner purchased this House in 2013
Why Wendi Gardner chose Sam Hughes
While considering a move from beautiful Seattle, we knew it had to be the right place for us to leave. The quaint charm of the property and beautifully landscaped yard, along with the historic neighborhood and location, made the decision for us.
What makes this House unique
The historic neighborhood, beautifully landscaped yard, pool(unheated), spa(heated to any temperature you want!) and gas BBQ with private outdoor dining area are a magnificent setting for this charming, well furnished casita. The New Orleans style balcony gives you a bird's eye view of all the property has to offer, including the Catalina Mountains. It is a delightful, private oasis conveniently located in the heart of Tucson.

Joel and Wendi are so nice and the property is beautiful. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was very well stocked. We were lucky enough to be there to see the owl family in the tree. We were there for U of A graduation. It’s an easy walk to campus. I wish we would have found this property before my daughters graduation. It was the best place I’ve stayed in Tucson over the past four years.
We loved having you stay. You’re the perfect guests. Although your daughter will no longer be here, maybe you can come back for a vacation. It was a pleasure meeting you all.
Great Location for U of A
We enjoyed our stay in this lovely 2 story casita for a working vacation. The house is old and has been lovingly restored. With history comes quaint small spaces... small and yet functional kitchen and living room areas. Bedrooms, upstairs, are large and comfortable. Outdoor patio and backyard are a feast for the eye and ear. The beautiful mature landscaping offers homes to a variety of birds and butterflys. Sit on the patio and enjoy! We enjoyed chatting with our hosts Wendi and Joel after long days of work. Thank you for our stay!
Delightful Tropical Tucson Retreat
Beyond expectations, the yard is beautiful, orange blossoms sweetly scented the air, birds woke us with jubilant song, while the great horned owl family sang us to sleep. The casita worked out well for our group of two couples. The private patio, just near the front door, had a lovely fountain that added a splash of charm to the atmosphere. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen set up well for cooking, the hand painted furniture added a whimsical touch throughout. With the bedrooms upstairs, each shared a balcony, surrounded by orange trees and bougainvillea, felt like we could be in Spain. The Casita is centrally located in the historic Sam Hughes neighborhood, which made for easy access to all manner of entertainment and adventure. The hosts, Wendi and Joel were gracious, welcoming and accommodated all requests with a smile and quick response. They were available for conversation, suggestions for activities, yet gave us privacy to relax as we desired. We hope to return in the near future.
Live like a local
If you want to get to know the city, stay in the neighborhood. Feel like part of the city, and enjoy all the fun things it offers. This spot is very close to the university, and a few blocks from a great little neighborhood watering hole and wonderful market filled with delicious goodies you can eat there, or enjoy in your garage apartment. It’s about four blocks from bus service and streetcar that will take you all over downtown Tucson. Very nice hosts and amenities. Lots of birds and beauty to be found all around!
We loved having you here and glad you enjoyed your stay. Hope to see you again.
We had a fabulous time staying at Casita Gardenia. It was very well equipped and Wendi and Joel were so accommodating and inviting. The bed was soooo comfortable! I highly recommend this property and I would stay there again.
We loved having you all at the casita. You made great use of your time in Tucson. You got the special ‘owl show’ and loved being here. It was fun sharing your adventures. We hope to see you again.
My friend and I stayed in this casita for two weeks. There are many great things about this place. Most of our contact was with Wendi. I found her friendly, helpful and kind. Any question was answered quickly. The neighborhood is beautiful and a short walk to the university. The casita has two levels. The lower level has a very small living room/dining room. Cozy for two people. The dining table was small and just did not work for our meals. We just ate at the coffee table. If you are having friends over or have more than two people, you can eat outside, though by evening when we were here it was quite cool. The bedrooms are roomy with a bathroom between. The bedroom off the stairs has to be gone though to get to the other bedroom, so the person in that room has to be ok with less privacy. The bathroom is between the two bedrooms. The kitchen is well appointed with all you will need. There is a hot tub. If you want to use it, you must let Wendi know so she can heat it up for several hours. She was glad to do this anytime we asked and it was ready when we requested. The balcony is a nice place to sit with beautiful view of the yard and pool. We enjoyed our time here.
The Sam Hughes neighborhood provides easy access to great dining, shopping, museums, the University of Arizona, downtown, the famous yearly Gem and Mineral Show, movies, theater and the University Medical Center. We are within walking distance to many venues. The phenominal Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Sabino Canyon or day trips to Tubac, Nogales, Bisbee, Mt Lemmon and the Biosphere will keep you entertained.
