We stayed at Compass Rose for a week. On arrival, the cabana was really clean and was exactly as shown in the pictures. It's very cozy and good size for two. The weather wasn't at its best and we started the week with lots of rain for the first 2 days. We almost needed the kayak to get to the car! The driveway was flooded for the entire week and the only dry spot was beside the garage, closer to the conch shells conga line! The observation deck is nice and we saw a dolphin on our last morning. Beautiful sunrise when it's clear. We took the kayak for a quick paddle but couldn't really go anywhere because of the wind and the chop on the water. We visited Placencia, the Mayan ruins but couldn't visit the blue hole in the park or cave tubing since everything was flooded from the heavy rain! Our day out fishing and snorkeling was nice though. Rough ride to get to the cay and reef but great fishing and snorkeling. We booked with Mirko and Lincoln was our guide and he was a great young man! We learned a few things about Belize and he snorkeled with us and was able to find some neat stuff! We even had some great footage of an eagle ray. Back to the cabana... nicely appointed, it has everything you need for cooking. Only thing missing would be a good non stick pan but other than that, it was great. With all the rain, the bathroom developed a funny smell but again, we had LOTS of rain! I would recommend this cabana for a couple but could be tight for 4 adults. Gayle was great providing all valuable information, directions, restaurants, etc. 5* for the owners!! Mirko checked on us on Sunday by phone - we couldn't call him since there was no credits on the phone so we kept in touch with Mirko via email asking him to call us instead. All worked out.... although we didn't have Internet service on the rainy days. Oh yeah, one last thing, I think our internal organs are starting to return to their original spots now. Hopkins road is awful, but you should try driving it especially after the rain! We didn't dare take the bicycles, it would have been bumpy and very muddy! Good week overall, nothing can be done about mother nature! Thanks Gayle for sharing your cabana!
Thank You for your kind words. It is always nice to receive such a positive review and to have guest that can enjoy their holiday when Mother Nature when she doesn't want to play fair. Climate change is effecting our weather patterns in Belize as it is around the globe. When it rains it saturates all over Belize. We have an awesome team at the Compass Rose and our goal is for all our guest to feel at home. We totally appreciate all suggestions and I will make sure I have a non stick pan on my shopping list of things to get for when I return to Belize. Thanks again. Gayle & Jack Kosydar-Owners.
Where's the BEACH?
Despite all the sand surrounding this home in the pictures, there isn't one… The sand was trucked in to surround the house! This property is located on the mangrove section of shoreline a few miles south of the Hopkins Beach... You'll need to hop in the car and drive toward town and look for an access seam between properties and "stake your claim" in the sand for any beach time. The nice "wildlife viewing platform" is surrounded by water only a few inches deep, with a floor of mud, crud & sea grass. At low tide it is surrounded by foul-smelling mud. Otherwise, it’s a pleasant place to set and stare out at the horizon after the sun has dropped behind the trees, and providing there is a breeze to keep the bugs at bay! Waterfowl frequent the area seeking feed in the shallow water.
We will remember this stay as the B&B in Hopkins... Barking dogs and Biting flies! Nearby properties are home to several dogs that make their presence known throughout the day. A couple "yappers" to the south went non-stop our first two days, but thankfully the property manager intervened (at our request) and it was only sporadic thereafter. In the absence of a significant ocean breeze, the Doctor Flies make enjoyment of the nice deck a challenge. They moved in within minutes of our going outdoors and were relentless. They are quite stealthy and inflict a nasty bite before you know they've landed. Repellent had little effect? We typically wrapped ourselves in towels or gave up the fight and moved inside. A screened porch would be a huge plus for this property! Oddly, we never encountered these annoying flies anywhere else in Belize? At one point during our 15 night stay we rented a room in Placencia, just to enjoy a couple days of quality beach time and take a break from battling flies.
The home was clean when we arrived, but I noted a slight scent of urine… It disappeared after a few days? The treats in the refrigerator were a welcome surprise! We expected a visit from the property manager upon our arrival to orient us to the property and area… We never received such and were basically “on our own” to figure things out. For instance: we discovered a Bose speaker to use with our i-pods at near the end of our stay… It was hidden in a lamp shade?? Likewise, we found the seat-backs for the kayak stuffed in a dark corner in time for our last float. The manager finally showed up on our final afternoon to inquire to what time we would be vacating the next morning...
It is very sad that you did not enjoy your trip to Belize. It sounds like there was not one part of your trip that you enjoyed. **Belize is not a country for everyone. It does not have the wide pristine beaches that Hawaii or Cabo has. It is a wild country, rough around the edges & jammed pack full of adventure. It is all things jungle. If it creeps, crawls & bites it is in Belize. This is information that can be obtained on any blog, website, travel guide on Belize. Belize is also full of mystery & beauty. **There is a “Survival Guide” for the Compass Rose in the Cabin. We inform ALL our guest before their arrival to the CRGH of this book & encourage ALL guest to read through this book. It is full of valuable information on the Compass Rose Guest House~Belize. It would have answered some of your questions before they became complaints in regards to the Bluetooth Speaker, Kayak & how not to feed the insects. The “Survival Guide” has helpful tips for all travelers. **There is not a thing we can do about Mother Natures annoying insects. We provide insect repellent but some insects such as the wicked little Doctor Fly just don’t care. Insects are all over Belize just not personal resident at the CRGH. Some resorts spray harsh toxic chemicals around their grounds while their guest sleep but we choose to stay as eco/earth friendly as possible. As for your complaints of the stinky muddy/urine smell that is the mangrove forest that dots the whole western Caribbean shoreline from Mexico to Panama. Mangrove is a very important part of the worlds eco system & yes it will omit a smell as any flora does. We are happy to hear you did enjoy the Wildlife Viewing platform. It is over shallow water to give you a relaxing place to sit over the Caribbean Sea & observe the wildlife that frequent the area or watch a sunrise. We can not control neighbors pets vocals or any neighboring noises. It was very kind & neighborly of the local neighbors down the road to do their best to quiet their pets so you would be more comfortable on Vacation. I have thanked them for this kindness. **We have a property manager who is available for any needs that might arise. Most vacation home rentals you are on your own & we at the CRGH value your privacy. The CRGH is small and doesn’t need much explanation. **We can't keep everyone happy we can provide them w/a spotlessly clean, comfortable cabana that provides a traveler with all their vacation home needs while they are exploring Belize
Perfect for 2-3 People
Hopkins was the perfect location for us to do some snorkeling trips, take a day trip to Mayan ruins, and travel south to Maya Beach and Placencia. Since our last visit to this area, there has been extensive development. It was rather sad to see the destruction of the mangroves in order to build large resorts and mega homes with canals. This is what is beginning to happen on Sittee Point so visit now before this area is forever changed. Hopkins residents were helpful and friendly and we enjoyed many inexpensive local meals. Resort type restaurant fare was plentiful, if that's your preference.
We are self-sufficient travelers in our 60's. Compass Rose perfectly suited our needs and was cozy, very clean, and comfortable. We appreciated the welcome gift of Belikins, soda, a small bottle of rum, and some other goodies. The kitchen was well stocked for all our cooking needs plus there was a nice supply of spices, napkins, foil, ziplocks, etc. There was plenty of hot water for showers and we had no issues drinking the municipal water. We especially enjoyed our time on the deck and watching the sun rise from the (very firm) bed. The views of the water are fantastic, with lots of waterfowl. As noted by another reviewer, the water is VERY shallow in front of the house and you'll need to go the the Hopkins beach for swimming. We didn't use the bikes since the road to Hopkins was very dusty when we visited.
A word of caution for those of you who, like me, are bug magnets: In spite of plentiful breezes and being cautious about not going out too early in the mornings or too late in the evenings, the Belizean sand flies made a feast out of me and made it impossible for me enjoy the water platform. Skip the natural oils, the bug coils, the citronella incense sticks, the bug bracelets, etc., and stick with Deet.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Compass Rose and would recommend it for couples or a family with one or two small children.
We always love hearing our guest enjoyed their stay at the Compass Rose. We strive to provide clean, comfortable lodging with all you would need to make the CRGH your home away from home while you explore Belize.
A hammock plus the sea breeze ...
... is what I almost enjoyed every night when I was getting back to the Compass Rose guest house just south of Hopkins. The place was the perfect hub for me to explore the Deep South of Belize, but also to enjoy some snorkeling with the boast leaving from the Sittee River marina .. just one mile down the road from the house. It's also close to Mayflower Bocawina National Park and Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, both of which provide great hiking.
The place itself was spotless, providing everything you need. I very much enjoyed the welcome gifts, including two bottles of Belkin beer awaiting me in the fridge. As I am 6'8", the bike wasn't really made for me, but I had a rental car to get around or I just walked.
If you leave the blinds open at night, the sunrise will wake you up in the morning, and as I was there during full moon, I also had some spectacular lunar vista to watch from the hammock on the deck every night.
Hopkins and its people are lovely, providing some good places to eat, unless you want to cook for yourself. You will find all the necessary equipment in the house.
I highly recommend the Compass Rose guest house, but please don't go in February next year as that's when I plan to return :-)
Danke, for sharing your most positive experience while staying at the Compass Rose Guest House~Belize. Location, Location, Location is what we looked for when we purchased in Belize. Sittee Point is a great area since it lies halfway down the coast line of Belize nestled between Hopkins & Sittee River Villages. It definitely is a home base for Day trips to most all the major attractions in Belize. We look forward to your return in the fall. ~The CRGH-BZ Team.

Thank you for your kind words. We are always thrilled to hear that people enjoyed their stay at the Compass Rose. We want all our guest to make themselves at home because that is exactly what the Compass Rose is..."Your Home Away From Home" while you are exploring Belize.
Upon arriving at the Compass Rose Guest House, we knew we had chosen the right place to stay on our first visit to Belize. Exceptionally clean, very well appointed and centrally located for the day tours we had chosen to experience. The "survival guide" was much appreciated and referred to on more than one occasion. We enjoyed sitting on the observation deck watching the sun rise, marine life and resident birds performing their morning rituals. The hammock on the back deck was my go to place in the evenings!
Gayle was so kind to share her knowledge of the country with me during a phone conversation even before securing my reservation. She was very prompt with emails leading up to our arrival. I highly recommend the CRGH for your stay in Hopkins.
I must add , the people of Hopkins are among the friendliest in the world! We enjoyed great conversations and outstanding meals. Already looking forward to a return visit.
