About Mark Stephenson

I moved to Charleston from Key West in 1987, I began buying and restoring historic homes for over 18 years. While I lived in Key west I worked in the hotel and hospitality industry learning what makes a great vacation. I have taken that experience to start Historic Smalls Alley.

Mark Stephenson purchased this cottage in 1997

Why Mark Stephenson chose Charleston

Downtown Charleston is a wonderful place to experience life as a 'Local' with Wildflour bakery and the many hip restaurants and bars of Elliotbourgh, you can dream of making Charleston your home.

What makes this cottage unique

Historic Charleston Single House located behind the main house is a small quaint carriage house.

Carriage House review

  • 5 of 5

Carriage house was cozy and comfortable. Nicely furnished and had everything we needed. Convenient location with easy access to everything we visited in Charleston.

Had a little trouble accessing the parking area because we came at night and it was difficult to locate the tiny alley access point. Some nearby college party noise the first night but it ended early.

Overall, an affordable and attractive location. Enjoyed it very much.

Very cute, just the right size for a week vacation

  • 5 of 5

We were pleasantly surprised about how clean the little house was. It also had a darling back patio. We never ran out of hot water ( and take very long showers). The parking was so easy and plentiful. We never heard any noise at night except people parking in the parking lot. It seemed lots of other neighborhoods could have been noisier. I had a concern before arriving and emailed the owner who answered back in 8 minutes. Overall we were very pleased.

This home was perfect for a long weekend in Charleston. The little yard was perfect for early morning coffee (with delightful smells from the bakery next door) and unwinding in the evening. Very pet friendly.

Like coming home. Welcoming and close to everything.

  • 5 of 5

We arrived very late and when we walked in it felt like home. Every thing was neat and clean. The beds were very comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes and cookware. The bakery next door was great for a quick morning cup of coffee. The location was off the beaten path but close to everything. We parked our car and walked everywhere. We will definitely be staying here again! We would recommend this quaint cottage to our friends.

Thank you for a wonderful stay in Charleston.
