Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 4-6 ; HI Tax I.D. No.: W03133185-01

HI Tax I.D. No.: W03133185-01

Our cool and cozy 2 bedroom is located just 300m from the beach (Ka'alawai) near Diamond Head. It has a large tropical yard with Bar-B-Q to savor fabulous views of the Koolau Mountains. Truly a great & convenient location to explore the island from - near & far.

Each bedroom has a queen size bed. A third bed (queen sized aerobed) can be made available for extra guests.

Our home is lococated just 300m from Ka’alawai Beach which lies at the base of Diamond Head’s eastern slope between Kuilei Cliff Beach Park to the west and Black Point to the east. Ka’alawai is a narrow strip of sand that fronts the upscale community of Ka’alawai near our home. This isolates the beach from typical crowds, virtually ensuring you will only be sharing the beach with a few surfers and local neighborhood residents. The beach access is just 300m from our home, hidden in a maze of residential streets with no signs pointing the way or identifying beach access; making it a bit of a secret. This golden stretch of sand is one of Oahu’s most picturesque with its backdrop of multimillion dollar homes framed by Hawaii’s most famous volcano crater – Diamond Head. The beach is mainly used by surfers to access popular surf spots (Cromwell’s, Brown’s etc.) beyond the reef. The shallow reef that flanks the beach extends all the way to the shoreline limiting the swimming area. Nevertheless, there are a few pockets of small sandy bottom areas suitable for swimming along the beach. The reef, however, does create an excellent opportunity to do some tide pool exploration with the children! This is an excellent place to bring some water shoes and check out some of Hawaii’s varied marine life. The beach is also lined with palm trees and shrubs, mostly used to maintain privacy for nearby houses, but they consequently create vast shady areas suitable for a cool respite when you are ready for a break from the sun. It is an ideal location for a picnic lunch! At the east end of the beach near Black Point, a black lava rock peninsula, is Shangri-La, a mansion turned museum, built by Doris Duke, the daughter of James Duke, the founder of the American Tobacco Company, and her husband, James Cromwell, in 1937. Upon her father's death, the socialite became one of the wealthiest women in the world. On her honeymoon, she visited Hawaii and the Middle East and became enamored with both. The newlyweds purchased five acres of beachfront property and built the manor which upon her death, per her wishes, became a center for the study, understanding, and preservation of Islamic art and culture. Perhaps its most popular feature though is not the house’s architecture or extensive Islamic art collection, but its small cove created to accommodate their yacht. Named after her husband, Cromwell’s Cove is now a popular swimming spot for locals and those “in the know”. It’s protected blue waters, deep depth, and sandy bottom make it an ideal location to jump off the surrounding lava rock wall and go for a swim. There are other beaches better suited for swimming, especially for families, nearby. If a family dip in the ocean is your objective, consider Kai’mana Beach Park just a couple miles toward Waikiki and the beach fronting the Kahala Hotel and Resort just a couple miles to the east at the end of Kahala Ave.

My home has a prime location in Honolulu, near Diamond Head on the Island of Oahu. Also, just over a mile to the Kahala Mall ( 8plex movie theater, WHOLE FOODS, Macys, Apple Restaurants). Waikiki is just on the other side of Diamond Head a mere 5 minutes away. As is Kapiolani Park, The Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium. In the other direction, just a couple minutes away, is the Kahala Hotel & Resort with fine dining (Hoku's, Plumeria Beach House) and dolphin encounters. The home is truly minutes from surf spots, swimming, hiking, restaurants, bars, shopping, theater, night clubs & farmer's markets.

It is the best location just out of the city and Waikiki, but with easy access if you'd like. The airport is 20 minutes away, Waikiki 5, Honolulu 10-15, Diamond Head Community College 2, University of Hawaii 10, Kailua 30, North Shore 45.

About Dr. Michael McMahon

I'm lived most of my life on the East Coast, Hawaii and Switzerland. I first came to Hawaii in 1986. I taught tennis and raced as a professional triathlete. After about 10 years in Hawaii I moved to Switzerland where I did my doctorate in Physiology. I moved back to Hawaii in 2006 after living in New York City area where I coached endurance athletes and taught at Columbia. I still coach and also work as a firefighter and real estate broker. For fun, I like being outdoors, hiking and sports. I still swim, bike and run regularly and enjoy playing tennis, surfing, kayaking etc.

Dr. Michael McMahon purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Dr. Michael McMahon chose South Oahu

It's amazing.

What makes this apartment unique

I live in the same home that the apartments are in. I chose this area because it is the best location on Oahu. It rests in a quiet upscale neighborhood yet is close to shopping (the Kahala Mall), Waikiki, The Kahala Hotel & Resort. It simply offers the best combination of proximity to the ocean and beach (300m) while still being near entertainment, restaurants and events. Finally, the area has great sunny weather and is convenient for reaching other locations on the island.

Disappointing

  • 1 of 5

We stayed in Michael’s basement apartment. Pros: close to a small beach, relatively inexpensive. Cons: There was no soap at all, and not enough towels. The apartment is bare bones and its furniture has definitely seen better days. And while we were able to make do with what was in the kitchen, we were only able to do so just barely. The wifi internet is so slow as to be unusable, especially when the people upstairs are watching TV (Netflix, presumably) which is often, which you will know because you can hear them clearly. Also the footsteps of people walking upstairs resounded throughout the bedrooms, loudly enough to wake us up several times.

To his credit, Michale did say to let him know if we needed anything. However, there was so much lacking in that apartment that we couldn’t possibly contact him for everything. And the one time we did contact him (over towels), he seemed annoyed.

Owner's Response: First and foremost, when guests arrive, I explain to all of them that the most important thing is to let me know if they need anything or if something is not to their liking. I even refer to it as the "#1 rule". As to why these problems weren't enough to bring to our attention when the guests were visiting and yet slam me with such a poor review I can only speculate. Of course, expectations and what one views as old or uncomfortable are subjective and vary from person to person. However, some things aren't subjective, such as a "basement" apartment or "slow" internet connection. We have internet speeds from the cable company at 100mb/s with a special WiFi router that can handle speeds up to 200mb/s. Why these guests would have had problems with internet makes no sense and I imagine has to do with there laptop. Unfortunately, I really don't know because they chose not to inform me. As for towels, each guests receives a set of four towels consisting of a Beach, Bath, Hand and Face towel. What is interesting to note was with this guests was two beach towels were missing when they left. As to the apartment and noise, in Hawaii many homes are single wall construction because the warm weather doesn't require insulation. The down side is noise travels a bit more than in double wall insulated construction. Furthermore, it is not a basement apartment. It is at ground level and all of the rooms are above ground. To be perfectly precise the bedrooms are built in to the slope of the terrain. So technically they are partially below ground level but all of the windows well above ground. At any rate, I suggest potential guests read the other reviews which on balance don't project such an extreme and inaccurate impression.

Great location

  • 3 of 5

I stayed in the 2 bed room unit with my wife, our 3 year old son, and my parents. The place is large, and had plenty of room for all of us. The washer and dryer were very convenient, and made it much more homey feeling. The owners above were extremely nice and very accommodating. We enjoyed our stay very much.

The reasons I only rate it as 3 stars (it was a close call for me, but I felt 4 stars was unfairly generous) are the lack of privacy, and the lack of adequate air flow downstairs made it very muggy, and fairly uncomfortable if we weren't sitting in front of a fan. As to the privacy aspects, you are in a building like most in the State of Hawaii, that is very open and not insulated or otherwise very sturdily constructed. You can hear the owners above, and can hear people in the unit next to you. It wasn't that people were being loud, it was just that everything is wide open, so you hear everything. Exiting the sliding glass door of the 2 bed room unit puts you right outside the window of the 1 bedroom unit. I am an early riser, and especially with the time change from the east coast, I was up very early and trying to quietly leave. Most mornings, my departure was marked by a prompt shutting of the blinds and windows by the renters in the 1 bedroom. I felt bad for disturbing them, but it was unavoidable under the circumstances. I could have exited through the adjoining hallway, but that wasn't any quieter. Also, the beach was usually occupied by more than a few people, and often groups drinking/partying beach side, even well into the evening. I certainly don't have a problem with people doing that, but the beach is not as peaceful or secluded as I feel the description leads one to believe. Maybe we did just see neighborhood people at the beach, but it certainly didn't appear that way. As to the airflow, I think that speaks for itself. I lived in Hawaii for a couple years, so I was aware of, and fine with, the lack of air conditioning, but to make it work well, you need a breeze. We had plenty of breeze outside, but it wasn't getting through the downstairs very well at all.

I do not intend this to be a negative review, but I wanted to provide what I consider a fair evaluation of the place. Contrary to some of the other reviewers, we saw no bugs at all, and found the place to be very clean. If you can take the conditions of the outdoors, and aren't looking for a private type get away, this is a great option.

Great location

  • 4 of 5

The best part about this lower level apartment is the location. It is conveniently located close to beach access, a quick jog or drive to Waikiki and other local shopping areas and around the corner from a great farmers market. We had 5 guests comfortably stay in this 2 bedroom apartment - 1 couple in each bedroom and the single on an air mattress in the living room. The home's grounds are well maintained and we often enjoyed just relaxing and reading a book in the shared backyard.

The apartment is inexpensive compared to other rentals in the area for a reason. It is clean but older and while it's a two bathroom the one shower is very small. The second half bathroom is easily accessible and located outside of the apartment. Note that we were visiting during hot weather and even with stand up fans the bedrooms got hot and stuffy because (like most older homes on the island) there is no air conditioning and the airflow through the back bedrooms is minimal. Please take heed from the other reviewers that the noise levels must be kept to a minimum as there may be renters in the apartment directly next door and the owner lives in the upper level of the house. The noise issue may also be a problem if you are a light or early/late sleeper as there were children living or visiting in the upstairs level so we often heard them singing, talking and running around the house.

If you don't want to worry about noise, like newer furnishings and stylish décor then this is not your place. If you want a less expensive place to stay with a kitchen, laundry room, nice garden and great location then go ahead and book.

perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We were graciously greeted by our hostess and accommodated for our early arrival. The property is a great distance from Waikiki and we enjoyed all the perks of being close by but far enough away to feel like we were experiencing hawaiian life as a locals. The beach is a short stroll away and wonderfully refreshing on a hot day. The house is just what we needed and would highly recommend it to anyone in need of a getaway. :)

Paradise

  • 5 of 5

This location was wonderful and had everything we needed. Well worth the fee. The location was in a quick distance to everything we wanted to do. The local beach was a 5 min walk and was very nice, especially for moonlight strolls. It was a tad rocky for the children but they managed. I enjoy running and was anle to run down to Waikiki from the house and around the base of diamond head. Great side walks and a lovely neighborhood.

Our hostess was fantastic and super accomadating. She even mailed us the photos we left in the apartment. My only thing that needs to be noted is due to the insulation, windows and closeness of the neighbors you must be quiet from 9-10pm till the morning. While there is a patio area to relax in the yard, night time gatherings are hard as you often laugh and may be too loud.
