About Dirk Messelaar

I am a retired University of Massachusetts dean who has owned our beautiful St. John condo for 13 years. In the mid-1970's, I taught English at the University of the Virgin Islands and my wife taught 4th grade at the Pine Peace School (St. Thomas). We loved St. John then, and later traveled often with our two sons there as they were growing up.

Dirk Messelaar purchased this condo in 2000

Why Dirk Messelaar chose Cruz Bay

All of our guests commend our condo's access to town and attractions, privacy, quiet, and amenities. Some have even said, they prefer our little piece of heaven to their stays at Westin or Caneel Bay resorts!

What makes this condo unique

Petit Tre'sor sits 200 feet above sea level looking over the coral-colored roofs of downtown Cruz Bay and onto Pillsbury Sound. Downtown Cruz Bay is a ten-minute walk down the hill (or a $4 taxi ride for each person). Cruz Bay is a quaint West Indian village with many restaurants, bars, and shops (including Wharfside Village and Mongoose Junction. One of three supermarkets is a five-minute walk down the hill. Petit Tre'sor has private parking for two cars/jeeps on a driveway just adjacent to the condo and on the same level. Passenger ferries depart from the Cruz Bay dock to St. Thomas and many of the British Virgin Islands; car ferries can take your rental car or Jeep to St. Thomas and back. Most importantly, the Virgin Islands National Park begins next to the town, and all of its world-class beaches are a short drive away. Guests may choose to take a safari taxi to anywhere on the island or a public bus from downtown to Coral Bay and Salt Pond beach.

VERY QUIET AND RELAXING

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I just returned from a 10 night stay and the experience was wonderful. We have been going to the St. John and the virgin islands for over 20 years and this was one of the best places we have stayed in terms of convenience, location and privacy. We have stayed at Solaris which was very nice indeed but we would chose Petit Tre'sor over Solaris. Location is wonderful, very quiet and secluded.

Wonderful Villa

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just returned from a 5 night stay. All of the great reviews are true, Petit Tre'sor is a slice of heaven. The location is excellent to enjoy Cruz Bay as well as all of the beaches on the island. The pool was amazing, and we had it completely to ourselves the entire stay. The villa with a full kitchen, was the perfect size for the 2 of us, and being August the a/c in the living and bedrooms was greatly appreciated. The one small issue we had was taken care of within hours by the on-island care taker. The bed is firm, if springy, and there is a variety of pillows to choose from. We communed with the tree iguanas every morning, and had tiny lizards to watch throughout the day. The sunset view from the pool deck is spectacular.

I highly recommend this villa to anyone looking for a quiet getaway on St John.

A Small Island Treasure Indeed!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had what was perhaps our best ever vacation experience with our stay at the Petit Tre'sor on St. John. We've visited the island several times in the past but never had accommodations that could compare to the privacy, the views, and the intimate ambience of this lovely condo.

Most of the wonderful features of this charming place have been accurately described by other reviewers. I would add that as birders my wife and I found the Petit Tre'sor to be an exceptional spot for observing avian and other wildlife. The ubiquitous Bananaquits of course have been mentioned by others and they are delightful creatures, but we were thrilled that a family of Smooth Billed Anis and several Green-Throated Carib Hummingbirds (new ones for my lifetime birder list) were there to greet us nearly every day as well as many of the island dove species, Pearly-Eyed Thrashers, and Lesser Antillean Bullfinches. We were often entertained by the antics of the several interesting (and harmless) lizard species that frequent the grounds and pool area of the condo.

The amenities at the condo are as described, with everything one needs to establish a home base for activities, make meals or just relax. The bed was comfortable. The kitchen has a complete appliance package and there is a well-stocked pantry. We used the provided coolers and beach chairs daily on our island excursions and marveled constantly at the incomparable views of St John, St Thomas and surrounding waters from almost every spot in the Petit Tre'sor. We found the wifi to be perfectly adequate although we had to reboot the router several times (a simple matter of unplugging and replugging) during our stay. The one problem we encountered with the cable TV was handled promptly by Dirk when we contacted him. A very responsive owner!

In short, our stay at Petit Tre'sor was a marvelous experience and one we hope to reprise when we return to St John again in the near future.

We loved our time at Petit Tre'sor.

  • 5 of 5

Petite Tre'sor is tucked on a peaceful hillside just minutes from Cruz Bay. There is a little grocery store just one minute away.

The designated driveway entrance was private and easy. The pool is wonderful, we enjoyed time just floating around in there, relaxing.

We went out to many of the fantastic restaurants for most of our meals but everything was there had we wanted to cook.

We slept in clean quiet comfort.

It was sure different for us New Englanders to look out the windows and see the Iguanas sunning themselves in the trees.

We appreciated the availability of Wi- Fi. There is a tv but we really didn't watch.

Petite Tre'sor lived up to it's name. We recommend it and look forward to returning.

The Messelaar villa sits at the top of a steep hill that is well worth the climb or drive.

  • 5 of 5

The Messelaar villa is so private and perfectly placed at the top of a steep hill. You can look out at the Caribbean Sea and the rest of the island from every window. I especially loved the opened shuttered-windows that provided a picture perfect view of the pool, exotic garden, iguanas, gecko's, and birds.

The breeze and beautiful sounds surrounding the villa offered us so many tranquil moments. We put out sugar for the birds every morning. We sat on the screened-in porch every night and took in the aroma's and the sunset views of the island.

The villa is well equipped with a full kitchen and grill for nights that we wanted private meals and was close enough to walk for meals in town. The beach chairs, towels, coolers, and floaties at the villa made our trips to the beach/hiking very convenient. The bed was not as comfortable as we preferred, but the linens were very clean and over-all everything in the villa was very well maintained.

The Messelaar villa was an ideal place for us to spend seven blissful days celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary. It really has a great energy and feels somewhat magical. I highly recommend it and hope to stay there again someday.

Can't wait to book again....

  • 5 of 5

The best feature of this nice little place is the screened porch where we spent hours everyday just watching and listening.....the unit is older with some work being done to another unit close by so we were not as alone as other reviewers have mentioned....had everything we needed to prepare breakfast and lunch and had most of our dinners from the starfish market where we love the local food......the bed was comfortable, the sheets soft and cottony and we did not lack for anything ......the wifi was spotty but adequate for social media and posting photos.....the bedroom ac was more than adequate...... we did not use the living area ac.....the pool area was lovely but beware the no see ums.....my husband was bitten every day multiple times....we think it was from sitting by the pool.....they love him....the iguanas were fun to watch coming to the pool to snack on the aloe flowers.....quite a family of them.....there are 20 steps down and 5 steps up to the pool ......well maintained with a sturdy railing that is open.....the short driveway took 4wd to back in and was a daily challenge that got easier with practice.....we had a taxi deliver us the first time and the driver said we should have given the old name.....sea breezes.....would return here in a minute!......simple,comfortable and the porch a huge plus!
