Why Anne Larson chose Southern

We fell in love with the Village House when my parents stayed there while visiting our family. When the house came up for sale, we jumped at the opportunity to own such a charming property, and we have enjoyed sharing it with our friends, family, and guests ever since.

What makes this house unique

When the Village House was completely gutted and renovated, thoughtful attention was given to adding modern comfort while maintaining the original character of this historic house. One of the best features of the home is that each bedroom has a full, private bath so no one has to share. In addition, there is another half-bath right off the kitchen. The outdoor spaces are equally inviting, especially the patio and pergola which is surrounded by gardens and our favorite spot to enjoy wine-time while watching the sun set behind the bluffs. We especially love the exposed brick walls on the interior of the house and the high ceilings and tall windows.

We are inspected and licensed by the MN Dept. of Health.

Family Stay

  • 4 of 5

Three families stayed for 2 nights at the Village Inn. The house is meticulous inside and out with attention to detail throughout. The terrace at the back is nicely hidden to most of the surrounding homes so that you feel like you are all alone. We did not see Anne but she was gracious and prompt in regards to all communication. We had to change our dates due to unforeseen circumstances and Anne was very accommodating. That being said, we were very disappointed in the noise from the busy highway in front of the house. We weren't aware that it was so close to the highway. A few members of our group got little sleep and the terrace out back was almost unusable do to the street noise. Maybe there was a specific event in town that weekend but the noise from the motorcycles was overbearing. Also, we didn't realize how limited we were in not having a stove and the grill not functioning properly but we were aware that there was no stove when we booked the house. The rest of the kitchen was supplied very well . Anne had board games and movies to watch which was very nice. It was a beautiful property but the noise would keep us from staying again, especially when the weather was so perfect to be outside.

Owner's Response: For lighter sleepers we suggest either the West Room or the North Room--both of which are located on the side of the house opposite the highway. We have also installed ceiling fans in each of the bedrooms, and some of our guests have found the white noise to be helpful in mitigating highway noise.

Enjoyed it

  • 5 of 5

Clean, comfortable, family really happy with everything..... only minor suggestions:

Suggestions: coffee maker takes hours to brew, need a new one (went to grocery store and when returned still wasn't done :), some of the bath towels should not be white, there should be some extra's somewhere (I couldn't have asked I know) , my dad wasn't happy that the cable didn't work for TV viewing (I didn't care), window sills when opened were full of dead lady bugs(old ones). Road is noisy, can't help that.

Homeowner very friendly, responsive.

I'll share pictures of the bride getting ready there when they are back.

Thanks!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great suggestions! We now have a new coffee pot and some special washcloths for makeup removal. (There's plenty of extra towels in the laundry room too, so just help yourself.) And those pesky Asian beetles... We'll do our best to stay on top of it!

5th Annual trip to Winona

  • 5 of 5

My group looks forward to the GRSF and staying at The Village House Inn every summer. The accommodations are a big part of the fun experience. The house is charming and so well maintained and it's centrally located to going into town, going to the museum or hiking at St. Mary's campus. We will start planning next year's trip soon.

Comfort Plus!

  • 5 of 5

We had a terrific stay at this lovely house in Winona. All of the bedrooms had private baths and were well-appointed. The 1st floor bedroom was a handicapped accessible room so that would be a big plus for someone needing that type of accommodation. The main floor living room was large with a combined dining area easily accommodating a large group. The second floor also had a smaller living room area with a TV and comfy seating. A bonus on the main floor was a small office room which would be especially convenient for someone on vacation but needing to work remotely for part of the time. The wifi was good. The house is located across the highway from St. Mary's University college grounds so walking and running paths were easily accessed. We found a tunnel under the highway to the college so no problems with worrying about crossing a busy highway. In some of the upstairs bedrooms the highway traffic noise was occasionally obtrusive. The house is very convenient to just about anywhere in Winona and close to a shopping center with a large grocery. We were only sorry we didn't have a range and oven, but made do with the microwave. We would definitely rent this place again.

Another relaxing, comfortable, great stay at the Village House!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful to be able to rent a home for all 8 of us as we come down for a relaxing weekend of Shakespeare, good food and company. Accommodations continue to be quite comfortable. We were able to make a couple of meals as well-even though no stove/oven cooking. The house is spacious yet a warm atmosphere for just sitting around an talking together.

We were not able to find cutting boards in the kitchen to cut things like vegetables, bread. This would be the only "complaint" for the weekend!

Anne was very helpful and kind as usual!

We plan to come back! Thank-you so much.
