About Charles Lankford

tropical Retreat was purchased in 2013 by 4 friends (Charlie, Chris, John & Chuck), that have enjoyed fishing together in Key Colony for over 10 years. One of the owners is a 10+ year resident of Key Colony and will give you the personal attention you deserve on your arrival. We created LACE Properties LLC and purchased this property so that we could not only continue to enjoy all of the amenities that Key Colony offers, but could share with those who feel a need for a little 'Tropical Retreat' for a week or longer themselves.

Nice house, beautiful view

  • 4 of 5

Window units are a bit loud, but the house is nice. The porch area with hut and picnic table (with fan!) is fantastic. The dock was great for evening fishing, close to the cabana club for afternoon trips to the pool.

Beautiful and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We want to thank Charlie for sharing his place with us last week. Everyone enjoyed the space and the dogs were right at home. Plenty of room for our group. The boat was a perfect addition to our trip and we appreciate everything you did to make sure we had everything we needed!! And the Cabana Club was perfect for late afternoon refreshments!!

Great place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

Very clean, comfy beds. Good fishing right from the dock. Walking distance to Cabana Beach club. Beach was clean, well kept, soft fine sand and ample lounge chairs available. Same thing for the pool area. It was off season and a great time to be there. Cooler temps and fewer people in the Keys.

Rental of Charlie’s boat with place was well worth it. We fished both gulf and ocean side from the boat. Caught an array of different fish and just enjoyed being out on the water. We were there during hurricane Mathew and had good weather just a few high winds and seas. Charlie gave us a refund for two days of the boat rental due to the higher winds and not being able to take the boat out. Will definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: As you were aware we try very hard to have our place in tip top condition. The one thing we have no control over weather. I don't want boat used on high wind days so I issue a credit when I judge its too rough for boat and passengers. Look forward to hosting you again. Charlie

WORST KEYS TRIP SO FAR THANKS TO CHARLIE

  • 1 of 5

I have been going to marathon key annually for 3 years and until this past year have had an amazing time. Every year we rent a boat to going lobstering and fishing, a main stable of our trip. The "BOAT" we rented from Charlie was a joke. Our 23 foot contender with a 225 yamaha motor on it was barely able to go 15mph and had no reverse. The live-well had maggots and grime and our boat ladder was falling apart. When we agreed to rent this property and his boat we were lead to believe we would have a fully functional boat with reverse. Upon arrival we were notified 20 minutes before we were to pick up the boat that it had broken two days prior. Had Charlie let us know when it had broken we would of possibly had time to reserve another boat. But as it was opening week for lobster season we were left with half a boat with no live-well and no reverse. Charlie gave us a sob story about how the motor would be so expensive to fix and that he couldn't afford it right now. Which would have been understandable if he wasn't driving around in a brand new Tesla, which starts at $70,000. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING. It took us much longer to go a same distance for lobstering and we had no where to stash our fresh catch. As if that wasn't enough our house was not prepared for people to live in. It is customary to leave the new renters a couple of rolls of toilet paper and maybe a fresh roll of paper towels. Neither of which were found in our home. The house must of been wired by a blind electrician because certain lights must be on to use several of the appliances. The house itself wasn't that bad aside from the master bathroom. The bathroom is smaller than a closet and the toilet is brilliantly positioned so you are hitting your knees on the wall in front while sitting on it. Another pain but not a deal breaker. The worst offense, aside from the boat fiasco, was how CHARLIE stalked us. Several times we would return home to find him sitting in our driveway and never a reason for the visit. On one occasion we were walking back from the park when Charlie drove by and turned around to follow us home to sit in our driveway for 30 minutes. We never truly felt safe on our VACATION. I understand that this is his house but it is customary to give your guest privacy or alert them that you will be stoping by. Our owner last year would call us if he was going to come by. Like the title says, this was by far the worst keys trip simply because of the house's owner Charlie.

Owner's Response: This was 2 separate transactions: Rental unit: VRBO Reservation. His complaints. No toilet paper and no paper towels. My housekeeper was sure they were put out. I was there Saturday and Sunday mornings to review boat issues. He could have mentioned I would have provided from our separate supplies closet. Size of bathroom. Built to housing code specifications. Absent from his complaints were that a globe from a boat light attached to dock went missing between Sat and Sunday visits. When they left our kitchen placemats were gone as were wicker containers for storing keys and other misc. items—souvenirs I guess. I rode by each day to see if boat was being used. It was. Boat Rental: This is a separate agreement unrelated to VRBO. This Renter asked for boat rental a day early. I went to prepare boat and it was stuck in gear. I spent hours trying to fix it to no avail. I managed to pay a premium to have mechanic come by Sat. am to troubleshoot problem. He disassembled linkage, put it back together and it shifted ok. I offered Renter to refund payments and he could have gotten another boat. He declined because the Rental was bargain priced and because he could start motor in forward gear so he could get to Lobster sites and back. I asked him if he could wait an hour while I cleaned boat and he declined. I gave him Saturday rental for free. Renter went out Sunday and boat ran at slower speed due to engine shutting down 2 cylinders to protect motor from damage. Mechanic came again Sunday and determined he could determine problem only at his shop. I again offered to refund Renter his money and he declined again. AT THIS POINT HE KNEW BOAT ISSUES AND USED THE BOAT EACH DAY FROM SATURDAY THRU FRIDAY! During orientation I showed him how to operated GPS and had him count no. of bars of fuel I provided so he could fill boat with same amount of fuel I provided. Instead of 6 bars he returned the boat short by $200+ of fuel. My $400 boarding ladder was ruined by he or one of his party. On Tuesday following the Boat was fixed as soon as parts arrived. I can understand Renter being disappointed that boat had a problem when he arrived. He acted as though the breakage was intentional. He doesn’t want to give me credit for my above and beyond efforts to get it fixed for him. I should have just refunded his money for unused days per our agreement. I’ll stand by the 5 star reviews we’ve worked hard to earn that we are proud of. CHARLIE
