About Marilyn Herst

Joe and I love living in Seattle near our family and with our sweet pups 'Bella'and'Rosie'. We enjoy traveling globally, and learning about other cultures. We have lived in California, New York, and now Washington where two of our grand-children are growing up right before our eyes. Additionally we have grand-children in Florida, and Spain. I love gardening, cooking, hiking, reading, swimming, kyacking and designing terrariums. Seattle has the perfect environment for all we enjoy. We'd love to have you visit us soon!

Marilyn Herst purchased this house in 2007

Why Marilyn Herst chose Broadview

Our scenery is stunning and each morning we wake up to the splendid view of Puget Sound and the majestic Olympic Mountains. There are many inspiring trails that take you thru the woods, along the beach, and around the serene neighborhood that we live in. We are just a short jaunt to the Village of Ballard where there are amazing new restaurants, coffee houses, boutiques, the Ballard locks where the annual salmon run can be watched and there are many bike paths for long interesting rides around town and around our lakes. Our local bus stops just a block from our home which takes you downtown or to the lite-rail in 20 minutes. It is also incredibly quiet here allowing the many varieties of birds to be heard along with occasional Eagles and Great Blue Herons.

What makes this house unique

Guests have access to the front courtyard, and back yard patio and garden. We enjoy our guests and have fun sharing our Seattle knowledge over a glass of wine. Our lil' helper is 'Bella' our therapy pup ( Miniature Labradoodle- non alergenic) who is the official greeter. We look forward to sharing our home with you!

Comfortable, Well Equipped, Just What I Needed

  • 5 of 5

This was my second stay here as I transitioned from living in the region to moving out of state. It served my needs well and Marilyn and Joe the owners, were genuinely interested in making sure I was comfortable. What especially worked for me was the quiet, the warm and relaxing living room spacious enough for big yoga stretches (even with 2 people), the comfortable, long couch for resting; the gas fireplace for extra warmth or atmosphere in the living room; a comfortable bedroom, the well equipped kitchen with washing machine and dryer, easy parking, a glorious view of the Sound and Mountains as you come and go (or sit outside and enjoy) and owners that are easy going and helpful. I enjoyed my stay and will return if needed!

Owner's Response: Kelly is a wonderful guest. She has become part of our family and we feel privileged to have had her here in Casa Bella. We have enjoyed getting to know her. She has personally taken great responsibility in taking care as a guest in all ways. We love having her and hope she returns again soon. Warmly, Marilyn and Joe Bella and Rosie (resident pups)

Life Underground

  • 3 of 5

When staying in Casa Bella there are pros and cons that you need to balance before deciding whether to stay there.

The apartment is large, spacious and comfortable.

It is well equipped

Marilyn and Joe are generous and friendly hosts. There were a number of food items that they left for us at the start of the holiday - raspberries, a fruit pie, cookies, coffee, oj, milk.

The apartment is in the basement which means there is little natural light, not much fresh air and no views.

Our hosts also let out the house above. When we were staying there, there was a (very nice) large family staying above us, with two small children. We could hear everything happening above, including footsteps, voices, children crying, etc., so we didn't have a very peaceful time.

Marilyn and Joe also have two dogs, which seem to have access to the basement at times it is not being let out. My wife suffers with pet allergies and, although we were told that the dogs were hypo-allergenic, she did suffer with asthma throughout the stay, which we can only put down to the dogs.

We spotted a rat in the garden on our penultimate evening, which our neighbor from upstairs chased away with stones.

Owner's Response: My goodness this is a surprise review since we did enjoy this couple and we were also staying on the property part of the time which would have made it easy for them to explain their concerns. We asked them several times how they were enjoying the unit and received the same positive response, that they liked the accommodations and everything was fine. Had they said it wasn't working we would have gladly refunded the nights they hadn't used. I wish they had as we also had two other parties interested in renting the space during their stay while they were here. As for our dogs ( miniature Australian Labradoodles) they do not stay the unit, they live upstairs when we are home, and are hypoallergenic. During the guests stay Seattle was plagued with smoke from nearby forest fires which could account for the asthma. So far in four years of renting this space there hasn't been a complaint even resembling this one. In fact never had a complaint before. I'm sorry they had a negative experience. I remember them saying they were unhappy with the previous place they stayed. Maybe this was a carryover. That is the first rat/ or mouse we've heard of since we've lived here for 12 years. By the way this is a walk- out apartment which is a standard design for many Seattle homes. There are many openable windows in the unit that bring in air and light, and two accessible private courtyards for guests, one with a view of Puget Sound. I hope this helps to clarify the comments from above.
