About the property

Minutes to Mountains, Resorts, University of Utah, Downtown

This 600-square-foot studio sits on a secluded, private 2/3-acre lot on the east bench uplands of Salt Lake City. Five minutes to the foothills and mountains, Wasatch National Forest, University of Utah, and to the freeway system that gets you to the ski resorts (including Park City, Deer Valley, Alta, Snowbird and several more) in thirty minutes. Ten to fifteen minutes puts you in downtown Salt Lake City. Quite easily accessible via major bus and transit routes. We can point you to the near-by 'locals only' ski pass discount outlets.

This area of Salt Lake City was originally cultivated with extensive fruit orchards over 100 years ago. A half-dozen of these grand old trees remain on our property. Such privacy and lot size is unusual in Salt Lake City, especially in our area, so close to the urban amenities like the University of Utah, downtown, parks, and the local freeway and highway system.

The unique architectural design of the studio, sitting as it is in a shaded 'rural-like' yet urban setting, lends itself to extended periods of contemplation and creative thoughtfulness, and our guests often find themselves just relaxing here rather than leaving to meet friends for skiing or hiking!

The hot tub is steps away from the front door, yet secluded and private, ready for your exclusive use during your stay. How better to relax after a full day of skiing, surrounded by snow and solitude under a star-studded, crisp, clear Western sky? (In the interest of your safety, please remember that children under five are not allowed in the hot tub, and those children under sixteen must be supervised by an adult.)

The bedroom is comfortable, with a queen bed and bunk beds, which work well for kids or teenagers (yet comfortable for adults as well). This studio easily accommodates from one to four people, and we have on occasion made room for two more (mostly younger visitors, during ski season!) on the couch and an inflatable bed.

The kitchen is fully equipped (including bowls, utensils, measuring cups, mixing bowls, knife set, pot set, etc.) with plenty of pantry space and a full-sized refrigerator.

Wifi internet with fast broadband fiber-optic connection. cable TV.

It is literally a three-minute walk to the local transit bus line, with connections to light rail, commuter rail, airport, and ski bus hubs. Campus- bound or heading to the the University of Utah hospitals? Take a ten-minute bus ride straight north to the University of Utah. Going to Park City? Either hop on Interstate 80 (five minutes away) for a half-hour drive, or catch the commuter bus and be there in forty minutes.

There are no laundry facilities on-site but a clean, well-maintained laundromat is just a ten-minute walk away. Within five minutes are multiple restaurants, several coffee shops, and several traditional and organic markets.

This property has a dedicated, private driveway for guests that will hold several cars and/or RV.

About Richard Howe

The owners have lived in Salt Lake City for over thirty years, and have traveled, skied, hiked, packed, and backpacked all over the American West, its national forests and national parks. We maintain an extensive library and map collection covering local, U.S., and Western U.S. topics, and would be happy to help you formulate and fine-tune your travel plans while in this area.

Richard Howe purchased this studio in 1993

Why Richard Howe chose Salt Lake City

It's close to everything. The 100-year-old main house (not the studio, which is at the rear of the lot) was one of the first in Salt Lake City's 'east bench' area, which was originally cultivated with extensive fruit orchards. A half-dozen of these grand old trees remain on our property. Guests of ours have, over the years, raved about the seclusion and peacefulness. Such privacy and lot size is unusual in Salt Lake City, especially in our area, so close to the urban amenities like the U of Utah, downtown, parks, and the local freeway and highway system.

What makes this studio unique

The unique architectural design of our studio, sitting as it is in a shaded 'rural-like' yet urban setting, lends itself to extended periods of contemplation and creative thoughtfulness, and our guests often find themselves just relaxing here rather than leaving to meet friends for skiing or hiking!

Perfect getaway

Great guesthouse. Lovely, accommodating hosts. We had everything we needed for the long weekend. The guesthouse is well-located in a nice neighborhood near outside activities. Our dogs particularly enjoyed the large yard. We highly recommend this place.

Perfect

We have stayed before and will stay again. This property's wheelchair accessibility is perfect for my family. The owners could not be more accomodating. If you're looking for a place to stay in Salt Lake City, this is it!

This place is great!

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay here and is like all the other reviews. It was plenty of room for my husband, very active puppy and me. The yard is beautiful and like the other reviews, we found ourselves just wanting to hang out on the porch.

Excellent

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the Studio for 5 nights at the beginning of July, 2016 with my 85 year old mother while visiting my son. The accommodations were wonderful. Most mornings we sat outside on the porch and had coffee, read, and enjoyed the quiet, beautiful yard and the nature sounds. It was very peaceful. Hosts are available and offered to help with anything we might need, but the studio is well equipped with everything we needed. I am returning for 3 more nights the beginning of August. I will use this as my #1 choice if I return in the future. Definitely recommend you stay here

The Perfect Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Being our first trip to Utah my boyfriend and I were unfamiliar with the area. We were welcomed so warmly by Richard and his wife and met with the kind of hospitality that is usually extended by family. We had driven from Los Angeles and had a late arrival, yet they were so understanding and gratious when we finally came in several hours later than expected. The guest house we stayed in was so immaculate, and cozy! It had anything you could ever need to feel at home, including guides and books and a thorough binder the host made that had everything from resturaunt recommendations to dog parks nearby. I can't think of a better trip that I have taken, or a better place to visit than this secluded studio in Salt Lake City. The city is great to see, if you've never been. But even if you are familiar with Utah, this place is worth a visit. I can't say enough about how great our hosts were and how great this place is! We will definitely visit again!

P.S. There is nothing better than coming back from a day at Antelope Island and relaxing in the jacuzzi!

Clean, quite, perfect stay

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed for a few days while in town for a wedding. The owners were extremely nice and provided all the help we could have needed. Nice having a private drive to park. The house was very well kept and clean. I really enjoyed the yard as well, lots of beautiful flowers blooming. We felt like we were in the quite country side.
