Lushly Landscaped Home In Walkable Neighborhood

Bedrooms 2
Property type bungalow
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom, 4 Sleeps

This mid-century home is well appointed with beautifully restored oak floors, an open layout and light and airy rooms. Our charming duplex is well suited for both weekend visitors and longer staying guests, with one queen bed and two twins, washer and dryer, fully equipped kitchen, modernized bathroom, bed, bath and kitchen linens. The flat screen TV has a cable ESPN sports package, the Apple iplayer is iPhone 4 and 5 compatible, and free wifi access is provided.

There’s lots of natural light to enjoy the native plants in the beautifully landscaped yard. Our neighborhood Trolley Barn Park is just one block away with a playground and ample space for ballgames.

Centrally located in one of San Diego’s historic neighborhoods, University Heights is well known for its friendly feel, many restaurants, coffee shops and bars as well as other shops and amenities within walking distance. The Convention Center, Petco Park, Qualcomm Stadium and the beaches are also all within a 15 minute drive.

We have two bikes available if you prefer to cycle around this very pretty neighborhood, or visit nearby attractions like the Sunday morning Hillcrest farmers’ market on Normal St. Several of San Diego’s many attractions, including San Diego Zoo, Old Town, Balboa Park, museums and Old Globe Theatre, are nearby and within easy biking distance or a 5-10 minute drive.

The beauty of San Diego is truly outdoors. Our outside deck in the shade of a magnificent coral tree, with a complimentary bottle of California wine, is the very best place to relax as the sun goes down after a wonderful day’s sightseeing.

About Kris Larsen

We are an expatriate Brit and a former New Yorker who enjoy living in San Diego. We love to travel, meet people and share experiences. To get the most out of our time away, when we take trips we always try to avoid 'corporate' and stay in B&B's and vacation homes.

Kris Larsen purchased this bungalow in 2007

Why Kris Larsen chose San Diego

This home appealed to us immediately because of its location, its walkability and the urban neighborhood experience. We can walk or bike everywhere and we are both a mere 10 minute drive or 20 minute bike ride from work.

What makes this bungalow unique

The exotic native plants and landscaping are very attractive features of this property. The front deck under the coral tree and shaded area next the bamboo stands in the backyard create wonderful spaces to eat, drink and relax outside with friends or in solitude.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We've stayed in a few VRBO's and have found that usually the proprietors add a bare bones apt to their home to accommodate guests. However, in this case, the owners have a spacious 1940's duplex apt which has maintained its original charm while being updated with all new tile in the bathroom, a modern kitchen and brand new furnishings. There is a little deck out front for morning coffee and an interesting neighborhood within a five minute walk that has every kind of restaurant, bar and coffee shop you could wish for. Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo are just a mile away. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Quaint Little Place

  • 4 of 5

Kris and Ken's place was definitely large enough for us and had everything we needed for our stay. Kris was very responsive whenever we needed anything. Would definitely stay again if we can. :)

Wonderful home and location for a San Diego Visit

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoy our stay in this comfortable home. It was nicely decorated and furnished which made it a an inviting place to return too after a day of exploring the surrounding areas. With the proximity of so many interesting restaurants we ended up walking to a new place for dinner each evening. We will be back.

Pefect place in SD for our family of 4

  • 5 of 5

We used customer reviews exclusively when we decided to book this property. The multiple positive reviews paint a very accurate description of this 2 bedroom unit. We never had difficulty finding on-street parking for our minivan, even on New Year's Eve. The house is situated in a cozy, cute, peaceful neighborhood tucked behind a trendy little street of bars and restaurants in University Heights. 2 minutes of walking had me bringing home a variety of delicious take-out food (we have young children) and less than 10 minutes of driving had us at Balboa Park and the Zoo. The park that is a few steps down the street had a great variety of swings, slides, and climbing to let the kids burn off some energy before nap-time or bed. Also, and this is not a joke, we saw people taking their rabbits and cats for walks (on leashes). SD is full of quirkiness that is so much fun!

I don't know if it was mentioned in other reviews, but one pleasant surprise was how much attention was paid for making the house compatible for our 2 year old. The folding crib, high chair, plastic dishes and cups, and AC outlet covers were really nice touches.

The owners are friendly and helpful and really made us feel welcome. We are hoping to return to this property again.

One more thing: If you are a coffee-person you will probably want to check out Twigg's Coffee (a 2 minute walk away). It reminds me of the "not-Starbucks" coffee shops from Seattle in the late 90s.

Four Thumbs Up!

  • 5 of 5

We found everything we needed for two adults and two teenagers at Kris and Ken's rental. The house is clean, cozy and well-stocked with the nice touches you rarely get in a more expensive hotel: warm down comforters for the wintry weather, excellent pillows on the beds and a washer/dryer. The garden is lovely and there are several nice outdoor spaces to drop into a chair and relax. We came to town for a youth sports event, so despite the fact that it was a holiday weekend, we didn't have much time to take in the surrounding neighborhood/sights. We did enjoy getting delicious coffee and pastries each morning at Twigg's, had dinner at El Zarape and really enjoyed relaxing at the park down the street.

I'll be honest: I wasn't sure how it would be to have the property owners of this duplex right next door, but Kris and Ken are absolutely delightful people. Warm, generous with their time, and spot-on with their local recommendations. They were attentive to our needs and experience without being intrusive and they're just generally fun to talk with. I can't recommend them highly enough and our family would love to stay here again!

Friendly, comfortable and great location

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at this property. It is in a very attractive part of the city, with lots of independent restaurants and shops in walking distance and plenty of things to see. Kris and Ken are a really friendly couple who make sure you have everything you need for your stay. They seem to really enjoy meeting different people, especially from overseas, and are very kind and amiable.

The house is well-equipped, airy and comfortable - it's in a very quiet area so there's absolutely nothing to disturb you - and surrounded by lots of greenery and interesting plants. We enjoyed sitting on the deck in the early evening, sipping wine and listening to the birds!

Beautiful Balboa Park is a must-see, don't miss the Outdoor Spreckels Organ Recital on Sundays at 2.00pm, and on the way drop by the huge Sunday farmers' market on Normal Street. We also love the many neighborhood restaurants, bars and coffee shops, especially Soltan Banoo, The Haven Pizzeria, Adams Ave Grill, Muzita Bistro and Monica's Coffee Shop.
