Local Guide

I wrote a 10-page guide with map about local activities within a one-hour drive. Most are 5-20 minutes away. It is on the desk in the home. It covers local stores, restaurants, hiking trails, picnic areas, boating, fishing, hunting, waterfalls, swimming, scenic drives, farm tours, bicycling, horseback riding, shooting, and more. There are many activities that are good for young children.

The Vacation Home

You stay in a clean 1000 square foot single-family home with 2 bedrooms and 2 full baths.

Bedrooms

It sleeps 10 so there’s plenty of room for everyone. There is a Queen bed in the master bedroom. The other room has a full/double bed, 2 twin beds, and a futon. The living room has a pullout sofabed. I provide you with pillows, sheets, blankets and comforters for every bed including the sofabed and futon. There is a washer and dryer.

Bathrooms

For your comfort, the bathrooms have towels and soap. There is a hair dryer, iron, shower cap plus other amenities. There is a sewing kit and medical kit.

Kitchen

The kitchen has everything you need: refrigerator, electric stove/oven, microwave, coffee maker, blender, electric can opener, and toaster. Plenty of dishes, glasses, pots/pans, utensils, flatware, cooking supplies, towels, hot name it. There is salt, pepper, sugar and spices. (You bring your food.) I want you to feel at home.

Heating, Cooling and Water

The house is all wood floor except for the kitchen. Heated with central electric heat. Cooled with central air conditioning but it is not needed much. In the summer it goes down to 50s or 60s at night. The water is from a spring. The water here is very good.

Internet, Entertainment and Phone

There is DSL high-speed internet, both wired and wireless. There is Dish TV in the living room, and a TV/VCR with VHS tapes in one of the bedrooms. In the other bedroom there is a DVD player, TV and DVDs. There is a landline phone with unlimited local and long distance within the United States so you can stay in touch with family and friends.

Porch and Yard

There is a covered back porch with a BBQ grill and chairs. In the back yard there is a picnic table for you to enjoy meals with your family. There is a firepit for a campfire. You overlook woods and farmland.

Pets

I do allow dogs (no cats). The house has a small fenced in yard (25 feet x 41 feet) that has shelter for protection from rain and sun. It is a great area for them. I do not have a weight limit or breed restrictions. Dogs need to be house broken, on flea medicine, and well behaved. If your dog is alone in the house, he needs to be in a cage/crate. When outside the fenced yard, your dog should be on a leash. I have cats, goats, ducks and chickens so I can't have any dogs that want to chase and kill animals. If you are bringing a dog(s), let me know how many.

One renter wrote: “You have great lodging for our dog. He had room to be outside safely without us.”

Smoking & Parties

No smoking in the house as consideration for other renters who do not smoke. You can smoke on the covered back porch and walkway. Please no house parties with large numbers of people.

Accessibility

The vacation rental has a ramp to the door if needed for wheelchair or walker. The bathrooms are not wheelchair accessible. The house is 1 floor.

Snow

It does snow here sometimes during November through March. The average is about 10 inches a year though that varies a lot from year to year. Some years there is almost none. If there is snow, the driveway will be shoveled. But if it is snowing when you show up, you may have to park your car by the street (on the driveway) and walk to the rental. It is only about a 3-4 minute walk. The local roads are very well maintained when it snows.

Boating

You can park a small boat (18 feet or less) on my property near the road. Let me know if you are bringing a boat to the rental. Boat rentals are available 5 minutes away at Nantahala Lake.

Children

Each child is counted as 1 person when you select the number of people. Thank you.

About Nancy Shirley

I have lived in Nantahala for 10 years. I love it here. It is very peaceful and relaxing. I started Nantahala Farm and Garden because I love country living. I have Ancona ducks, Dominique chickens, and Banty chickens. I have a large herb garden and grow vegetables. The mountain life is wonderful.

Nancy Shirley purchased this house in 2005

Why Nancy Shirley chose Smoky Mountains

I moved here because I wanted to live in harmony with nature. I gardened starting as a child when my mother taught me about plants. I loved it then, and I love it now.

I enjoy walking in the mountains. The whitewater rafting is a lot of fun with great restaurants overlooking the water at Nantahala Outdoor Center. I love bird watching. It is especially nice here in the autumn with a colorful display of falling leaves.

What makes this house unique

This is a great neighborhood where there is real community. Most people here know each other. People wave to each other when driving by. You will enjoy the small-town atmosphere.

The vacation rental is located in Macon County, 2 hours west of Asheville, North Carolina. Atlanta is 3 hours away. It is 40 minutes northeast of Murphy, North Carolina. Franklin is 40 minutes away. It is 40 minutes to the closest Walmart or Lowes in Murphy.

The closest town is Andrews which is 20-25 mintues away. In Andrews are the nearest grocery store (Ingles) and drug stores (Walgreens or Turner). There are 2 restaurants (Lakes End, Wayah Cafe) 5 minutes away.

Nantahala is a great place to vacation.

Great place, very comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Nancy did everything to ensure we had a good stay. Bear in mind that the place is not in the Smoky Mountains, and it is about 1-2 hours drive from the main attractions

Owner's Response: I'm glad you had a good stay. I was happy to help you. VRBO categorizes my location as: Home / USA / North Carolina / Smoky Mountains / Lake Nantahala. I am 5 minutes from Lake Nantahala. I guess it depends what you mean by main attractions. There is a lot to do very close to my vacation rental. Local activities include whitewater rafting, fishing, boating, horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, hunting, shooting range, jet skiing, snow skiing, snowboarding, sledding, mountain biking, motorcycling, ATV riding, swimming, rock climbing, bird watching, wildlife observation, scenic driving, antiquing, waterfalls, walking, flying lessons, picnics, star gazing, nature walks, autumn leaf sightseeing, zipline canopy tours, Snowbird Wilderness Outfitters, John Campbell Folk School, gambling casinos, and Native American cultural events such as those found at the Cherokee Nation Reservation.

The property had a great view and was just minutes from the lake!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful experience hiking and canoeing around Lake Nantahala. I only wish we had more time to stay here! This house has everything you need except groceries if you want those. There is a grill nearby, but if you like to cook, be sure to bring your food with you as the closest grocery store is 25 min away. I highly recommend staying here! Our two dogs loved it as well :)

Lovely property, kind owner, and exactly as advertised

  • 5 of 5

My family (husband and two boys 7 & 10) and I travel ALOT. We enjoy everything from camping to luxury cruises and everything in between. We're used to "roughing it" and we're used to very high end luxury accommodations and all we ever ask from a trip is to know what to expect. Nancy Shirley more than delivered. Her rental home was clean, well equipped, and exactly as advertised. We knew we'd be spending most of there weekend doing our '"activities" and would basically just be sleeping and eating breakfast on the property and decided to forgo the high end properties for clean and out of the way to enjoy the great outdoors. Nancy was perfect - she provided everything as promised, down to the dozen of fresh eggs waiting for us in the fridge and we only saw her when we called to ask for a tour of her farm. She graciously took my kids and I on a very informative and fun tour of her herb garden, chickens, ducks, and property. My city-dwelling boys really loved the farm. We REALLY enjoyed the outdoor fire pit and took advantage of some Smores and star gazing. As someone who rarely spends time in truly remote places, the star gazing was out of this world - the new moon (no visible moon) just enhanced the experience.

Nancy communicated with us promptly, answered all of our questions and accommodated us same day. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

WARNING - there really is no cell service for at least 20 minutes to and from this property - make sure to preload your GPS or print out directions to and from. We didn't do that, took a wrong turn and ended up driving 45 minutes out of the way before we could course correct. No reflection whatsoever on the property or the owner, just a warning for others to save themselves from that particular inconvenience due to our own poor planning.

Everything you need

  • 4 of 5

We were needing a place temporarily while there were repairs made to our RV. The home had everything to make it a home while we were there. I especially appreciate the fenced yard for our dog. Having a shepherd/husky mix, it can be difficult to find places that except larger dogs and it's a rare gem to find a place with a yard so he can roam. Thank you so much

Exactly as advertised. Comfortable and cozy

  • 5 of 5

You're up in the mountains among the locals. Sitting on the patio drinking your tea and listening to the animals in the woods and on the nearby farms.

Great for a base and easy to get to the lake and River to do outdoor activities.

The farm tour with Nancy is great.

Our needs were met!

  • 4 of 5

The house (sort of a double wide) was clean, quiet and convenient to lots of great outdoor activities. The AC worked well, great hot water, quick internet, kitchen had ample cooking supplies. We enjoyed our stay. All switches were labeled, which took a lot of guessing out of determining how things worked. The provided guide to the locale was clear and helpful. The beds could have been better, but as bed comfort is such an individual thing, maybe it was just us. There were 3 in our party. I can see the place being comfortable for 4 adults, or a couple with a bunch of kids. There are beds enough for 10, but the 10 would really have to like each other.

The bottom line is, we would consider staying again.
