Ron and Cheryl are both retired, after long careers in banking and education. They split their time between their home in Toronto and the farm. The farm has been in Cheryl's family for 40 years. In the early 1800's, the first owner was John Elmsley, Chief Justice of Upper and Lower Canada. The farm produces corn, hay, soybeans, wheat and other cash crops. A large crop of fireflies is produced in the summer.
Ron & Cheryl purchased this farmhouse in 1973
Our family has been fortunate to have this country retreat to escape the noise and crowds of Toronto. We would like to give others the opportunity to enjoy this unique experience of farm life that is so close to the city but a world away spiritually.
The farmhouse is located on a quiet rural road, surrounded by fields, woods and horses. It is on a wooded lot set back from the road, yet is a short drive to shopping, golf and skiing. Conveniently located to conservation areas and nature trails.
This property was a lovely break from the City but was within a 15 minute drive of anything that you might need. The house is a beautiful old farmhouse set back from the road and surrounded by 90 acres of farmland. The house was even better than we expected and Ron and Cheryl were very helpful. I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a private getaway.
I just want to say on behalf of my family what a privilege it was to stay at your farmhouse. It is the perfect place for a multi-generational family to stay! We played many games of frisbee under the big trees on the front/side lawn, and many card games around the kitchen table. The last day we were there we had a picnic supper out on the lawn. We didn’t even begin to do all of the activities that were available to us on your property.
You were very gracious hosts in greeting us after our long day of travel, and I appreciate that you kept in touch with us during our stay and were available to answer any questions we had.
We were two sisters with our hubbies and our teenaged children staying at the Country Road Retreat for a week this summer and absolutely loved it! We enjoyed the very private, peaceful and beautiful grounds, as well as the very spacious and comfortable interior. During our stay we did day trips to Niagara Falls (approx. 2hours), Toronto (45 mins.), and Canada's Wonderland (40 mins.) and in between thoroughly enjoyed our down time at the house. Ron & Cheryl were extremely welcoming and helpful with suggestions and directions. Would definitely recommend this lovely heritage home! (Plus AMAZING bang for the buck!)
We spent two and a half weeks at this wonderful property in April 2015. It is a lovely old farmhouse, with plenty of room for a family to spread out. The kids (5 and 6 years old) loved playing in the huge garden (equipped with football, badminton, frisbee, baseball, a swing, etc.), watching wildlife (chipmunks, woodpeckers) and exploring the surrounding fields (90 acres). The house is a charming family home, nicely furnished and well stocked with all you could need, including kids games / DVDs / books etc. It is incredibly peaceful, with beautiful trails close by (Greenwood, Lakeridge). The owners were very responsive and helpful, and gave us a warm welcome on our arrival on a cold and rainy night after a long journey from Scotland. The only drawback was having to leave at the end. If we get another opportunity to visit this area, we would most definitely look to stay here again.
A fabulous heritage farmhouse, in current family usage, yet with all the mod cons and spotlessly clean. The charm of the furnishings and fittings were very appealing, the owners responsive and gracious, the modern conveniences avilable. Thank you for sharing your house with us.
This charming and well-equipped farmhouse has it all - beauty, comfort, peace & quiet, wonderful outdoor spaces for relaxing and entertaining, and is a very short drive to downtown Pickering, though it feels a million miles away. As a family that travels extensively with children, we can say we have never stayed anywhere that accommodated kids better - sports equipment, lots of room to run around and things to do, family friendly interior - it was just brilliant. We will absolutely come and stay again. Five stars from us!
Within 10 km., there are six golf courses, three conservation areas and two ski hills.
