Overview

About the property

6 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom, With A Short Walk To Lake Michigan

This turn of the century cottage, located on historic Ottawa Beach, has a view of Lake Macatawa and is a ten minute walk to the beach on Lake Michigan.

There is ample room for large family or multi family gatherings. The wrap around porch has a porch swing, several seating areas, a ping pong table and a dining area which comfortably seats 25+.

The interior also has a variety of spaces for large and more intimate gatherings: a dining room- a great place for ongoing games of RISK, scrabble, or jigsaw puzzles, a 'parlor' with french doors for privacy and four daybeds for extra sleeping, and a front room with several seating areas.

There are six bedrooms, five with double beds and one bunk room with beds for seven.

Down the hill is the quaint General Store for ice cream cones and sundries. Visit one of the many area fruit farms or parks and paths to hike, bike, and play. Water sports and bike rentals are nearby for easy access. Fish off the docks on Lake Macatawa, off the pier in Lake Michigan, or charter a boat for a day-long adventure. In downtown Holland enjoy art, unique shopping, and great dining experiences.

We rent weekly, Friday-Friday in peak season, but provide flexible scheduling in off season. The cottage is not heated, so it is not available for winter use.

About Nort Fogel

Our cottage has been part of the Fogel family for four generations. It continues to be a gathering place for annual family reunions numbering 28 and growing! Our families are scattered from coast-to-coast, but we always return to sit on the porch swing, cavort in the lake, play football on the beach, and walk to sunset.

Nort Fogel purchased this cottage in 1919

Why Nort Fogel chose Holland

'The Cottage' was bought by the family in 1919 because of its proximity to Grand Rapids where the family was originally based.

Great family reunion with our family of 18.

  • 4 of 5

The accommodations worked well for a large family ,ages 77 to 8. The bathroom situation alarmed people to begin with, but only on the final day did we have a problem with everyone wanting to take a shower before leaving. Parking was excellent with immediate access to the house.

The bones of the structure were sound and we enjoyed the old world charm. The highlight was the wraparound porch with adequate seating and eating space. A game night with extended family accommodated ping pong, a "spoons" table another game table and Scrabble.

The weather was perfect and the lake was 70degrees.

Large cottage filled with history and character!

  • 5 of 5

The Fogel cottage helped our family create a week of celebration that will never be forgotten. It has basic, but very sufficient household supplies, linens and amenities. If you are looking for a comfortable, family friendly, large cottage near beautiful Lake Michigan and appreciate the area's history -- this cottage this is a great choice. With some rented tables/chairs and re configuring of furniture for a day, the porch and living room served as the perfect place for 60 people to celebrate a 50th Anniversary. Then, it served our family group (of up to 23 at night) for the week of relaxation and reconnecting that followed. (A few of our own travel cots placed out on the porch proved perfect sleeping for some)

Our week's weather was perfect for days on the beach, dinner together at the cottage, a walk to the general store for ice cream cones, and hours of cards and games each evening on the porch and/or small dining room. Having a cottage that is "unplugged" with no wifi and minimal TV created time for one another, and opportunities to read and rest for people of all ages, including teens. Strangely, not one complaint of being bored :)

My husband and I live in Holland MI, but family came from several countries/states so we were concerned about their expectations. Upon first tour of the house we heard a lot of. "Well, it is an interesting house" and by the end, many many people said it was the "perfect house" for our family needs. Again, it is a "basic" cottage, but the price, location, size, and its historic characteristics made it perfect.

Also, we made a couple of requests prior to our stay about housekeeping issues and they were attended to when we arrived. Several cars can be parked in the cottage's driveway which was great for the week better than most cottages that come with one or two spots.

This cottage is a wonderful place. We hope to return someday.

Exactly as described or better.

Thank you very much for the trip to Holland, Michigan. This is a great location and the house was perfect for our group. We have other large family gatherings planned and hope to be able to schedule another trip. The house was at least as good as the description. Thanks again.

Family vacation / wedding

  • 4 of 5

We have spent 10 days at the house with different family members. We really enjoyed staying there. The house is big enough for a large group of people. During the week we had a rehearsal dinner (BBQ) for over 40 people, and the porch had enough space to handle.

The house had 2 large Weber BBQ and 1 Gas BBQ.

The house could be cleaner. The location is just perfect, close to the beach and near the harbor.

We missed the wireless connection and had to buy one.
