Rustic Beauty On Quiet Pond: 3 Bedrooms, Sleeps 5

Ideal spot for couples, families and friends to escape from the buzz of civilization and just relax in the private, wooded setting or experience a whole host of area activities and sites that are just a short ride away. After visiting our cottage, we think you'll want to make it an annual vacation destination.

Summer guests may enjoy swimming, fishing, canoeing and frog catching in the quiet, trout stocked pond. In the fall, you'll find a dazzling display of fall foliage and plenty of festivals and community activities. Winter skiers and outdoor enthusiasts - bring your ice skates, skis, snowboards. Pat's Peak is only 5 miles away and many other ski areas are just a short drive.

The rustic beauty of our getaway on French Pond has a peaceful ambiance and relaxing charm, but offers easy access to many area sites and activities.

Here is an email we received from a previous guest...

'Our time at the pond was heavenly and provided a rest that we all really needed. Thank you for giving our family such a beautiful place to unwind and reconnect. My husband had been hesitant to leave his busy practice but after a couple of days realized he was in the exact right spot.'

Less than 1.5 hours from Boston, Henniker is a charming college town nestled along the Contoocook River with it's own covered bridge right at the village center. As you familiarize yourself with Henniker, you'll be delighted by the warm, small town atmosphere. Explore the quaint eateries, the century old pharmacy/toy shop or grab a bite at Intervale Farm Pancake House & Ice Cream Stand. In the colder months, you can enjoy winter fun at Pat's Peak Ski Resort just 5 miles from your doorstep!

Entering the cottage, guests are greeted by floor-to-ceiling windows providing a panoramic view of the pond. The rustic entryway features the cabin's original hearth (decorative only), vaulted ceilings and a bookcase filled with games, books and DVDs.

Off the entryway, there is a full bath with shower. Moving into the cottage, the entrance opens up to a Great Room with open concept. The living room, furnished with a comfy overstuffed couch and chair, features a TV, stereo and BluRay/DVD player.

Facing the pond is a bright and airy sun-room with wicker couch, chair and settee. The sun-room flows into the fully equipped kitchen with an expandable dining table (seats 8), refrigerator, stove, microwave, and coffeemaker.

An oversized deck extends the entire length of the cottage with a large staircase which leads to the small, private beach area and dock. Below the deck are a canoe and paddle boat for guest use.

Master Bedroom (sleeps 2):

Queen bed, water view, attached 1/2 bath, walkout to deck, ceiling fan, TV/DVD player, closet and antique dressing table.

Twin Bedroom (sleeps 2):

Two twin beds and antique dresser. This room also features a water view, walkout to deck and ceiling fan.

About Linda Thomson

Although my family is currently living in Pittsburgh, we are originally from New England where we have a very large extended family. We love the peace and quiet of mornings spent on the deck of our New Hampshire cottage watching the wildlife and listening to the sounds of nature. Every summer we have a big BBQ and fireworks display on French Pond to share our favorite spot with family and friends. We have also spent many winter vacations skiing (the boys prefer snowboarding) at Pat's Peak and ice skating on the pond. We travel back home as often as possible; but unfortunately we don't get back often enough which is why we've decided to share our cottage experience with others. It's such a great place to create truly special memories - I know you're going to love it!

Linda Thomson purchased this cabin in 2004

Why Linda Thomson chose Merrimack Valley

Less than 1.5 hours from our home in Massachusetts, the cottage was a perfect spot for our family to get away from our daily routines and reconnect. We fell in love with the rustic beauty of the cottage and the picturesque pond. It immediately struck us as a great family vacation home.

Henniker is a charming college town nestled along the Contoocook River with it's own covered bridge right at the village center. We love the warm, small town atmosphere including the century old pharmacy/toy shop and the small businesses where you'll find the owners behind the counters. Being a family of skiers and snowboarders, it's an added bonus to have Pat's Peak Ski Resort just 5 miles from our doorstep.

We fell in love with the cottage and the town and have been blessed with some wonderful family memories of our vacations on French Pond.

What makes this cabin unique

When you first walk into the cottage, you're greeted with a panoramic view of the water and woods. You're struck by the beauty of your surroundings. It's so relaxing to sit and listen to the call of the loons or soak up the brilliant colors of the fall foliage as you sip your morning coffee on the expansive deck overlooking the water. The pond offers a lot of activities from fishing and swimming, to canoeing or simply bird watching. The rustic beauty of our getaway on French Pond has a peaceful ambiance and relaxing charm, but it also offers easy access to many area sites and activities.

Henniker is a great place to relax and get away from it all or enjoy an action filled vacation. Stroll the streets or trails along the river, enjoy a summer concert on the green or spend an afternoon playing golf, take a hike through the lush trails or ski one of the area mountains. There is a lot to see and do around Henniker. Its central location makes it a great place to use as your home base while you explore New Hampshire.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Wow! What a fantastic place. I lived in New Hampshire for four years and truly miss it. The cabin was the perfect place to stay while visiting friends. Thank you so much for sharing your home with my family.

relaxing getaway

  • 4 of 5

The only reason I gave 4 stars is because upon arrival, the keycode did not work so we were stuck outside waiting to try to get a cell signal to contact the owner and figure out how to get in the house. The other reason is that when we got in, (this is early April so still snowy) there was so much snow piled up in front of the door and all over the deck and the pathway, my husband had to spend about 30 minutes just clearing away so we could even get to the door. This should have been taken care of before we arrived, in my opinion.

Those issues aside, it's a quaint, comfortable cabin-y place to stay with a beautiful view over the lake. It was frozen and quite cold while we were there, but we didn't mind as we were happy to stay cozy and relax inside. The deck would be wonderful in warmer weather though.

We also enjoyed a few trips into Henniker for dinner and a look around, and there's a wonderful little place called "the book farm" down the road that is the best little used book store I've ever been in. We found books for every member of the family.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to review your stay. Our apologies for the inconveniences you experienced upon your arrival. Apparently, the housekeepers accidentally used the manual key (versus the electronic keypad) to lock the door. We've spoken to the house cleaning company to ensure that problem doesn't reoccur. Spring snowstorms are certainly an unwelcome problem, but we are addressing that concern with our property manager for next season. I'm glad you were able to enjoy the coziness of the cottage and exploring the town. Hopefully, you'll consider coming back when the weather is warmer and you can experience a relaxing morning on the deck or afternoon kayaking on the pond. Thanks again for choosing our home for your getaway! Linda

A beautiful, relaxing place.

  • 5 of 5

This great cabin on French Pond was our final stop of a three-week New England vacation. We feel fortunate to have found it. The setting is quiet and beautiful; we enjoyed a gorgeous sunrise and watched the loons while they fished. The homey feeling camp is well equipped and clean and the owner was very attentive. We highly recommend this rental for those looking for a quiet get-away or a family get-together.

SERENITY!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great week at the cottage and saw a great deal of wildlife! The loons were our favorites, as well as the eagle, heron, otter, pileated woodpecker, chipmunks and more. Very peaceful and isolated. Comfortable furnishings and wonderful views. The cottage has a total of 7 sliding glass doors giving you a great view from every spot including your bed. We would love to return again. Pam and Justine

New Hampshire's state capital is less than 15 miles away with interesting shops, eateries and site-seeing. Shopping: Main street has a few cute shops and a rather large quilting store. Large retailers (Walmart, Target, BestBuy) can be found in Concord along with a shopping mall and movie theater. Outlet shopping is less than 40 minutes away in Tilton, NH.

Restaurants: Intervale Farm Pancake House is a favorite stop for Sat or Sun breakfast. Housemade maple syrup is available to take home. Daniel's Restaurant and Pub, located right on the Contoocook River, offers a nice selection of entrees and an extensive cocktail menu. For a very casual meal, St. George's Cafe is a great sandwich stop.

Its central location makes it a great place to use as your home base while you explore New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont or even Maine.
