Overview

About the property

5 Bedrooms, Large Property&Waterfront, Private Tennis Court, Jacuzzi & Sauna

This very private stone farmhouse is situated on 7 acres and has 460 feet of private and spectacular water frontage on the beautiful Upper Rideau Lake. 'The Rideau Canal system is a historic treasure, a national wonder and a Unesco World Heritage Site. With the scenic town of Westport at one end, Newboro with it's renowned fishing to the South, the ancient Narrow's Lock at the East end, and the massive granite cliffs of Foley Mountain dominating the wild North shore, the lake is one of the great beauty spots of the region.' (URLA Website)

The Upper Rideau lake is easy to boat around, not very busy, has two towns that can be accessed by boat and locks on each end that offer endless opportunities to explore the various nearby lakes and towns that make up the Rideau Canal System. Or you can just stay on our lake which is great for fishing, swimming, boating, windsurfing, waterskiing, kayaking, etc. Our cottage is located at the deepest part of the lake (60 feet depth) and has 6 feet water depth with hard packed sand bottom (no weeds) at the dock--great for jumping into the lake--and then quickly drops to 30 feet just offshore.

My husband and I have been lucky enough to have travelled to many countries around the world and we both agree that we have never seen a place as special as this property. Its huge mature trees, greenery, beautiful clear waterfront and spectacular sunsets each evening have quickly found a place in our hearts. The property is such an oasis of privacy and seclusion with its large acreage and waterfront.

The old stone farmhouse which was built in 1835 is the heart and soul of the property. It is renovated for comfort but maintains the old world charm with its exposed beam ceilings, stone fireplaces, 3 foot thick walls and original pine floors. The newer addition provides extra space and comfort and is packed with fun with a sauna, jacuzzi, pool table and large screen television. A large wooden deck runs along the side of the house offering views of the lake, bbq, eating and sitting areas and access to the private tennis court (which includes hockey and basketball nets).

The farmhouse has a Master Bedroom with a king bed and small office area, a master bathroom, a second bedroom with two twins and a third bedroom downstairs with a queen bed and a half bathroom. There is a fully stocked kitchen with all appliances including coffee maker and dishwasher. There is also a beautiful living room with an old stone fireplace and exposed beam ceilings. The addition has a second dining room with large screened windows and views of the lake, a room with a pool table, piano and hot tub, a second living area with large flat screen television, a full bathroom, sauna, a fourth bedroom with King bed and pull-out twin sofa bed and desk, and a loft bedroom upstairs with one queen, 3 twin beds & a toddler bed we call the 'kidzone'.

The cottage is an easy three hour drive from Toronto (310 km), an hour and twenty minutes from Ottawa and 40 minutes from Kingston (50 km). It can be accessed by train into Kingston or Smith's Falls (35 km to the North).

I like to speak with all of my guests by telephone prior to renting. If you are interested, please contact me by telephone at 345-926-0374 after you have sent a booking request. Thank you.

About Nicola Williams

My husband and I were born and raised in Canada. We moved to the Turks and Caicos Islands shortly after we were married and lived there for twelve years. My husband is an accountant and I am a teacher and we have two children. Last year, we relocated to the Cayman Islands.

Nicola Williams purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Nicola Williams chose Portland

My husband and I have been renting cottages in different areas around Ontario every summer for the last 15 years with the intention of buying. When our friend put us onto the Rideau area, we absolutely loved it! Then we looked at the MLS and saw this property and immediately fell in love with it. It is the perfect place for us to visit with friends of family when we are back in Canada for the summers. We both agree that we have never seen a place as special as this property. It's huge mature trees, greenery, beautiful clear waterfront and spectacular sunsets each evening have quickly found a special place in our hearts. The property is such an oasis of seclusion, nature and privacy with it's very large acreage and water frontage.

What makes this cottage unique

The property's location enables you to rent a boat and travel up and down the Rideau Canal system. If adventurous enough, you can travel to Kingston from one side of our lake and Ottawa from the other side of our lake. Or you can just boat, fish, canoe, kayak, swim, waterski, etc. around our own lake--the Upper Rideau Lake. It is great for swimming and fishing and our cottage is located at the deepest part of the lake with 6 foot depth from the end of the dock with hard packed sand bottom. We boat to the town of Westport for tourist shopping, meals at excellent restaurants like the Cove, and to get groceries and ice cream for the kids. The historic town of Newboro can also be reached by boat with the well known tourist shop called Kilborns and the restaurant and hotel at Stirling Lodge. We also like to take a drive to the spectacular city of Ottawa, our nation's capital.

Amazing.

  • 5 of 5

We love this place! Have gone for two years now. It is large, clean and has so much character. There is something for everyone. We went with a number of kids between 3-10 and everybody had an amazing time. There is a water trampoline, zip line, tennis court with basketball and hockey nets. Kids loved fishing off the dock. I cannot praise this place enough. The owner is lovely as well.

Perfect vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our extended family of 11 recently spent a week at the farmhouse and had a wonderful time. The property is beautiful and so quiet. I feel in love with the place when I first found it on the site, but it was above and beyond what I expected. The house itself is spacious with plenty of room for everyone to spread out, and there is so much to do without leaving the place.

The owner was wonderful to work with answering all my emails promptly. I would recommend this property to anyone looking for the perfect, serene vacation. We hope to go back again!

Great Family Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Your cottage is just amazing and we had a wonderful time enjoying all it had to offer. Our weather was a bit 'iffy' but it didn't matter at all. The kids went tubing every day in spite of the rain. I had a great time fishing and we had a very tasty fish fry of bass that everyone enjoyed. The tennis courts were used by all and for our son-in-law and his 7-year-old son it was a daily workout. The pool table saw inter-family tournaments and the hot tub was the perfect place to end a cool swim. We had s'mors over a fire in the evenings by the lake and watched beautiful sunsets. We would be thrilled to come back next year!

Girls Getaway Perfection

  • 5 of 5

My cousins and I plan an annual get together that is always filled with great friendship, food, drinks, fun and constant laughter. We have rented a few different spots over the years but this place was by far our favourite. The home is charming, spacious, comfortable, and exactly what we needed to settle in and relax. The dock was where we spent the majority of our time and words cannot even begin to express the beauty and tranquility of that space. We had beautiful weather which allowed us to take full advantage of the beauty of the lake and surrounding property. It is no surprise that we have already booked for next year!!

Excellent Get-Away!

  • 5 of 5

This property was perfect for our 14th Annual Cousins Weekend.

The amenities were great! We enjoyed all of the activities; tennis, hot tub, sauna and even dipped our toes in the lake!! The spacious Farmhouse was great for all eleven female cousins to spread out and enjoy.....especially the leisure and lengthy dinners in the lovely dinning room with a view of the lake and sunset!! We even had our main event dinner catered by Kudrinko's from West Port. A Local Grocer with an amazing Chef, Stella!

We would highly recommend this Farmhouse and would consider returning!!

The Owner Nicola was very helpful and wonderful to work with.

Amazing weekend!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I just recently spent a fabulous 3 day weekend in May at this property to celebrate my twin sister’s and my 45th birthday. We came home feeling like we had been away on vacation for a week! This is a beautiful property with so much to enjoy – the pictures prove it all! Whether as a family, a group of friends or just a romantic getaway for two this truly is the best way to get away from it all and simply just enjoy the country side while having everything and more available to you.

The home and its new extensions are beautiful, both indoors and outdoors not to mention the amazing dock by the lake and the deck off the side of the house running along the tennis court.

The place was very clean, spacious and very functional with lots of room to move around to enjoy all the entertainment services available. There was plenty of very comfortable sleeping space and the kitchen was perfect for our large crowd for meal preparation time. A room boasting amazing views of the lake and garden had a huge table that we could all sit around and enjoy our meals not to mention being able to play games and cards well in to the evening while watching the sun set.

I think our biggest dilemma was to decide how to start off our day: should we play tennis first, or swim in the lake, or use the indoor hot tub and sauna or play pool? There was so much we could do that we could not get enough of each but in my opinion the tennis was awesome followed by a dip in the lake (still cool in May but we had to go in!) and then a relaxing soak in the hot tub. Although there is the very picturesque town of Westport nearby we never left the location simply because we had brought everything we needed with us and we were very content to just stay put.

As for the owners they were very quick and helpful in answering all of our questions both before and during our stay.

In my opinion you can’t find a better place to relax and enjoy your time off! We’ll be back to play more tennis and enjoy the lake.

Owner's Response: Dear Barbara, Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a great review of our cottage! I'm so happy that you had a special birthday celebration with family and friends. It is great to hear that you gave the tennis court plenty of action for its original purpose - when we're there it gets a lot of ball hockey and basketball time too! Thanks for being such wonderful guests and we wish you all the best! Nicola
