Hale Honu (Turtle House) is our Big Island ocean view rental and is our place of refuge. We would like to share this top Hawaiian vacation area with you. Situated on the Big Island of Hawaii just twenty miles south of Kailua-Kona, Hale Honu is surrounded by a lush tropical garden, and provides a breathtaking panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, in a quiet and comfortable setting that is conducive to uplifting the light-of-heart and soothing the frazzled spirit.

Also at the Honaunau Inlet you will snorkel with an endless variety of tropical fish and sea turtles. A ninety-minute drive south will bring you to Volcano National Park. Thirty minutes north are the shops and fine restaurants of Kailua.

Along the main highway north you will pass shops offering the island's best buys for Kona Coffee and Macadamia Nuts. A fruit stand offering organically grown fruits and vegetable is less than one mile north. The Kealia village store with necessities and movie rentals is a short walk to the south.

Why Bob Hofmann chose Captain Cook

Hawaii is wonderful place to visit and a top vacation destination. The Big Island is, we think, the best of all the islands. The volcano is spectacular, we have two mountains soaring to almost 14,000 feet, it offers world class sport fishing, beautiful beaches, a rich history, the best snorkeling and most of all for our location, a grand place to just go relax and get away from the hubbub of life.

What makes this house unique

Beautiful Big Island surroundings that offer a peaceful and quiet vacation getaway! A perfect place for a romantic Hawaiian escape or a private family coastal retreat.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hale Honu is located in a quiet tropical garden setting 800 feet above sea level with a wonderful spectacular unobstructed panoramic view of the Pacific. It is just minutes from Hookena Beach State Park (where dolphin often play) to the South and Place of Refuge National Historic Park (also a great snorkeling spot) to the North. Our guests are thrilled by the location and the overall quality of their stay. Here is a sample of comments left in our guest book.I awoke again to the wonderful sound of birdsong. We loved eating on the beautiful lanai, and what an awesome view! So very peaceful. It was a delight to have an avocado fall at my feet – great fresh guacamole. We’d recommend kayaking across the bay to Captain Cook monument, even for inexperienced kayakers. Snorkeling is unbelievable near the monument. Very comfortable with awesome deck & ocean view

  • 5 of 5

Felt very comfortable in this open house. Close to Captain Cook Bay, Two-Step Beach and Hookena Beach. True to the advertising - we swam with dolphins three times!

Owner's Response: We are glad the Nelsons enjoyed our house and that the dolphins cooperated with our advertising. Aloha.

Nice quiet location

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed staying here. We booked it last minute, and only had a few options under a $300/night range, so we chose the honu house and are glad we did. Be warned, though, if you are expecting luxury this is NOT a good choice.

Pros: nice, quiet location, but close enough to town to get what you need. Well stocked with necessities, i.e. pots, pans, towels, etc. Great view from the large lanai of the ocean. Very roomy/spacious house - we liked the layout. We loved the avocado trees in the backyard. We also really enjoyed the upcountry feel of the area.

Cons: interior of house is extremely dated - think 1960’s. Cleaning lady/next door neighbor was not done cleaning when we arrived (after check in time) which wasn’t a huge deal. Rooster a few doors down woke me up every morning at 5:00AM, along with the mooing cows and squealing boars in the backyard. In all fairness, though, we all kind of got used to this after the second morning.

All in all we really enjoyed staying here. It’s the kind of place that grows on you. If you are looking for a true Hawaiian ‘local’ experience this place is for you.

Comfortable house close to great snorkeling

  • 4 of 5

Stayed 3 weeks here at Hale Honu with my sister, brother-in-law and 87 year old mother. The house is comfortable, the grounds nicely landscaped, and the view over the ocean lovely. The kitchen is generally well equipped, but missing a tea kettle; washer (noisy!) and dryer are functional and appreciated. The house sits back from the main highway enough that the vegetation (and the frogs, at night) muffle the road noise, which isn't too bad this far south of Kailua Town anyway. There are considerate neighbors on both sides; the ones to the north are caretakers for the place and were very responsive to the few minor issues we encountered. The property backs up to heavily vegetated ranch land with wild pigs, cows, and chickens to add to the entertainment.

We loved being this close to 2-step, the Pu'uhonua o Honaunau, and Ho'okena. The Captain

Cook Sunday farmer's market, Choicemart, and the South Kona Fruit Stand supplied most of our needs nicely. While it's a little far to venture into Kailua Town often, we came for the peace to be found away from town, and found it! Many thanks; we'll be back!

Great Value and Good Location

  • 5 of 5

For the price, the house was larger then expected and the location was amazing. Note there is no AC but lots of fans and we never were uncomfortable. The landscaping is amazing and the wildlife: tons of geckos (inside and out), wild boar, cows, and birds. If you are not too picky and want a decent base for your Hawaii adventure, this is perfect. If you want a luxury, pristine, resort type place to stay, this house is not for you. We loved it and hope to stay again.
