About Mark Benjamin

I'm a builder/designer/developer (green/sustainable), yoga nut and general lover of all things design related.

Mark Benjamin purchased this estate in 2010

Why Mark Benjamin chose Deserts

After over five years of looking all over the valley for the right home, I kept coming back to this property.

It had been built by a former New York Fashion Designer in 1963 who retired to the area and opened a dress shop in the village. She also maintained a home in La Jolla, but fell in love with the peaceful desert landscape and spent most of her time here.

Forgoing the usual 'Master-Planned' areas, I wanted space, privacy and 'good bones.' Having only one owner since it was built, there were undeniable attributes:

Incredible mature palms, SIX acres, walking distance to the finest resort in the valley (La Casa Del Zorro) it's Mid-Century pedigree and of course, the Tea House.

Jane (our retired Fashion Designer) it turns out was (it's said) a Buddhist. She had an authentic Japanese Tea House designed and shipped from Japan for formal Tea Ceremonies and Meditation. How could a lover of Yoga/Design/Real Estate (me) pass that up?

So, with that as a start, I spent two years rebuilding virtually everything while staying as true to the original as possible. Huge new outdoor entertaining spaces in the front where the driveway used to be. Completely redesigned landscaping. All new interior design. It's a labor of love and will continue to evolve as the new landscape matures.

It's simply one of the most amazing homes in the valley. Peaceful, stylish, private.

What an incredible place to relax, recharge and appreciate all that life has to offer! This serene, private, Mid Century Modern Gem was a dream! The Owner could not have been more accommodating answering all of our questions and helping us to coordinate amazing private Yoga Instruction (in the period correct Japanese Tea House) and the most AMAZING Holistic Health Practioner/Masseuse...enjoyed under the stars of course! We were looking for a high end, private, peaceful retreat where friends for 35+ years...could rest, rejuvenate and reconnect. This property exceeded our expectations!

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at this retreat in the spring, and it was the perfect getaway. Peaceful, beautifully curated, and an ideal distance from San Diego.

We spent every morning out on the patio drinking coffee, reading, and soaking in the beautiful landscape surrounding the house. We especially enjoyed the outdoor shower and well equipped kitchen - being able to cook "at home" was a definite plus. When we did leave the house, we enjoyed hiking in the surrounding area, and meandering through the small town. We're pretty particular travelers - I'm an architect and my wife is a designer, and this house exceeded our expectations.

We'll be back next time we need a getaway!

This was better then expected! It's as good as the photos. My husband and I had a wonderful time visiting Borrego but mostly staying in this beautiful and immaculate retreat. A vacation not far from home we thoroughly enjoyed the amenities from the "tea house" to the outdoor shower and pool. The decor was calming and soulful. Loved it!
