Enjoy our 5 acre secluded retreat at the edge of the Forest, where you can look out across a meadow to a stunning view of the Peaks. Our home has solar power and a rainwater collection system, and is at the edge of the ponderosa pine forest, which means you can hike, mountain bike, or cross country ski right out the door, or drive a few miles to a network of classic trails. We're located 3 miles from Snowbowl Road, which takes you to downhill skiing in winter and awesome hiking in summer. We're also only an hour from the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Meteor Crater and Anasazi ruins (Wapatki & Walnut Canyon), and 15 minutes from downtown Flagstaff. Our guesthouse(aka, the Roost) can be a base for all your northern Arizona adventures.
The Roost has new furniture and amenities, including 1 queen bed, one queen sleeper sofa, and three twin beds. Its upstairs location next to pines gives it a treehouse feel, perfect for viewing the Peaks and birdwatching. Resident elk and deer commonly graze on the property.
The guesthouse is attached to our main house, but is completely separated and has its own entrance and parking area. It has a private sandstone patio with outdoor grill, table, and chairs. Two mountain bikes are available for our guests.
I'm a 12th generation Arizona native, who grew up in Tucson, Arizona, and moved to Flagstaff in 1975. I always wanted to build a cabin in the forest from the ground up, and had the opportunity to do so in the early 1990's, when this special land was sold to me by an old cowboy. I tried to build as sustainably as I could, with many local materials, and have a rainwater harvesting system as well as grid-tied solar power.
We have traveled all over North America, lived for nearly a decade on two other continents, and still feel the Southwest is the best place to call home. We love the variety of landscape, ecology, and climate within a few hour's travel, as well as the Native American influence in this area.
One month in heaven. Loved the setting and the opportunity to enjoy nature and all it holds. Such a great place and all your homey touches made our vacation such a dream.
This rental is nothing short of amazing! We stayed over the long holiday weekend to go skiing at Snowbowl. This will be our new home away from home in Flagstaff!
The views are spectacular and the house is very well equipped and maintained. I loved being able to be at a "home" instead of a hotel. My two girls loved the bunk bed and making a huge snowman.
I would highly recommend. Suzanne does a fantastic making you feel welcome but still giving you plenty of privacy.
The Redtail Roost is such a happy place to come and stay! We were a group of six - 2 parents and 4 young adult kids. Four of us went skiing, two of us hiked and played in town, and the location was ideal for all of us. Because this place is north of Snow Bowl, after a day of skiing you get to avoid the crazy traffic heading back to Flag. But still, it's so reasonably close to Flagstaff, it's a quick and easy drive if you want to go to town during the day. And - the views from Redtail Roost are stunning. The cabin itself is absolutely delightful. It manages to be cozy and roomy at the same time. It's equipped with everything you could possibly need and very comfortable and appealingly furnished. (The pellet stove provides immediate toasty warmth and ambiance.) Would definitely recommend this, and would definitely come back. A million thanks for your lovely vacation rental!
What a wonderful place you have here! Difficult to fault, everything has been thought through meticulously. We stayed with our two young children and their grandma, so 5 total, and it honestly couldn't have been any better.
Thank you for being so accommodating. Happy Holidays!
The Redtail Roost exceeded our expectations. The apartment is impeccably clean and comfortable. It was built with every attention to detail that reflect the natural beauty of the surroundings: antler handles in lieu of traditional doorknobs; timber logs on the face of the kitchen peninsula; custom-made cabinet doors, planked walls, ceilings and doors. We used the location as a home-base for traveling to Sedona, the Grand Canyon and Antelope Canyon and for exploring the quaint town of Flagstaff, itself. The Roost is set privately away from other homes, so you feel like you are in the county alone, but yet, close enough to run to Safeway for supplies! The view of the San Francisco peaks is beautiful, and access to Open Space is steps away for hiking, biking or running. We felt so at peace in this quiet and relaxing home and we highly recommend it to others.
We stayed here four nights in November. It's even nicer than the pictures describe. The views are SPECTACULAR. All you see is mountain, meadow and sky - no other homes in sight. The cabin is well-outfitted and cozy with a nice attention to detail. It was super clean when we arrived. The pellet stove heats up the place in minutes and is simple to use. Kitchen had everything we needed. There were plenty of channels and movies on the TV and was pleased to find a well-stocked reference library on the local attractions (guide books, etc.). We loved sitting at the table in the morning with our coffees watching the sun come over the Peaks. Location is great too, tucked away in a quiet meadow just outside of town, but far enough from the highway so you don't hear a thing except nature. We spotted a herd of elk in the evening under a full moon - wow. Easy to get to all the sights. Would stay here again for sure. Could do a whole month here no problem.
My husband and I wanted to visit family and friends and also catch the sites in northern AZ. We connected with hosts S and F and cattle dog Diego, and immediately felt welcome. The two bedroom cottage is situated away from the main house, and has direct access to hiking, biking, fishing, skiing, downtown Flagstaff (10 minutes away), Humphreys Peak...shall I go on? We were at the Grand Canyon in a little over an hour, Sedona in the same time, Winslow, Walnut Canyon, Meteor Crater and Snow Bowl Ski Park all within 30 minutes. PERFECT LOCATION! We were able to walk to the National Forest, take bikes around the trails, grill outside on the deck, and then be in downtown Flagstaff for dinner in ten minutes. We dined at "home" a couple of nights thanks to the full kitchen, and watched football and checked emails while enjoying the amazing views of the Peak. The cottage has a master with a queen, a second room with bunk beds (very comfy!) and a living area with a fold out sleeper sofa, which was super comfy. Great dining table that had extra inserts as our party grew one night, and everything you'd need for a great day out. Thanks to S, F and Diego for an absolutely amazing stay! One of the best parts? One of the hosts takes amazing pictures and we bought a pic from her so we can always remember our stay! We will be back! R and L ~ Montana
