About Kevin and Carla Olson

We are a happily married couple with two sons residing in Gig Harbor, Washington. We recently became 'empty-nesters' as our youngest just went off to college this fall. Kevin works for Valley Regional Fire Authority and Carla owns a dance studio, Academy of Dance. When not working, we enjoy golf, fitness, music, sports and get-away's to our cabin :)

Kevin and Carla Olson purchased this cabin in 2005

Why Kevin and Carla Olson chose Mount Rainier

We purchased this property to have a year around get-away for our family where we could ski, snowboard, and golf during the day and have a peaceful, relaxing place to spend the evenings. We wanted to purchase a cabin located in the High Valley Community because of it's proximity to White Pass and our access to free golf and two large heated swimming pools. We chose to purchase this cabin because it is set on two lots in a quiet neighborhood.

What makes this cabin unique

We had a great time making improvements and adding our personal touches to the property. We put in two new porches, a hot tub, new carpet and flooring, a new roof, new septic system, painted, and added rustic decor to create a 'cabin-in-the-woods' feel. Our boys loved the bunkhouse, Dad loves the hot tub and Mom loves the rockin' wood stove!

Just perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This property was just perfect for my family when we visited the Northwest in early July. There are three of us, including an 18-month old so we stayed in the main house and did not use the back bunks. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the cabin was somewhat toddler friendly, too, which I think anybody with kids knows that's never a given. The price was great and the accommodations were spot-on. And since I was coming off a work trip, having the washer and dryer also was key to extending the life of my suitcase. For our trip, we planned to spend time around Mount Rainier so this wasn't too far at all, and we also were able to work in a day trip to the Nature Preserve, which is about 90 minutes away. Great location, and we really enjoyed the time we spent in Packwood too. Such a cute town, and the ladies in the local grocery store seemed to know everybody's name! The local restaurant Christy's doesn't have much competition, but we still chose to go there three nights in a row because it was decent food at a decent price.

Lastly, it was a real pleasure working with the owners of this property. They made the process easy and were very accessible with whatever questions we had. I definitely would stay here again if the opportunity presented itself.

VERY Happy! Everything Exactly as the Listing States!

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I have had the pleasure of booking a 4-night stay in this rental (we just came back home today) and, we can assure you all, the listing is spot-on! Comparing this rental with the others in this price range, the positive features included go far beyond what others provide! We absolutely loved having an outdoor campfire pit, BBQ grill (charcoal), washer/dryer AND private hot tub, which was awesomely maintained!

The wifi worked great for us; great driving to nearby parks and fun; the owners' manual provided lots of help and tips on how to use things at the cabin; the owners are EXTREMELY responsive to questions and issues! Great fridge, awesome table and benches! Sitting on the futon was comfy! Tons of towels and washcloths! The dishes provided were awesome, especially your big soup bowls! (Made us want a set!)

Another awesome bit - even without the provided A/C running, the cabin protected us very well from the mid-80 heat wave we had while there!

BONUS TIP for other renters: Check the bathroom and kitchen before heading to the store for supplies and food - previous renters are encouraged to leave things no longer needed, such as condiments and shampoos!

The reason we are giving a 4 star rating: It's actually 4.5! Simply cosmetic stuff, really; these were not deal breakers at all! Only a few things needed to make our next time there perfect:

1.) A new can opener (pretty please)! The single old-school metal one provided is very old and sometimes cannot latch onto cans. May I suggest the OXO brand (no I do not work for them!) or something similar with big handles?

2.) The light above the stove (button on microwave) did not work while we were there, but we didn't miss it too much.

3.) Need better kitchen sink stoppers! Tried them all; tough to hold water in sink while doing dishes.

4.) The living room light nearest the wood burning stove did not work, but there is a lamp provided for that spot! Still plenty of light all around, even at night!

5.) We noticed the cooking surface of the BBQ needs cleaning or replacement, but we were fortunate enough to bring our own grill top insert to use the BBQ! Very easy to use; we did take it out from under the porch to protect the cabin!

My husband and I will DEFINITELY RECOMMEND this rental to our friends and family! Such a terrific deal and we hope to come back again soon! VERy quiet and peaceful; just the decompression spot my husband and I needed! THANK YOU so much! :)

Overall was good stay

  • 3 of 5

Dishes, cups and glasses were not clean.

Enjoyed the hot tub outside. Stores and other grocery place is 7-8mins drive away.

Sleeps 8 is incorrect as there is 1 futon, 1 queen bedroom and 2 twin beds. So, total 6 can sleep comfortably.

Serves Ok for all needs

  • 4 of 5

In right location to all Mt Rainier visiting points. Its a cute small two bedroom unit. There is one detached bedroom which has 4 beds.

There was no shampoo in shower which Intypically I find in all vacation rentals. There is only one bathroom in this vacation rental. Internet is available however is very slow, say 2 Mbps. Refrigerator freezer will not close.

Overall a nice place to live with family for a night or two.
