About Monica Donaldson

I am a Montessori preschool teacher and my husband is an artist. We have three children two of whom are with us and the oldest is currently living in California. Having a vacation rental is a new venture for us. We are very excited to share our home with others. I grew up on this property with my parents and grandparents, I have to say that my grandfather was an inspiration to me. He loved this land and he taught me how to love and appreciate the land like he did. For that I am grateful, and blessed that I can share it with others.

Monica Donaldson purchased this house in 1978

Why Monica Donaldson chose Luquillo

My husband and I together have been living in Puerto Rico for over 30 years. I grew up in Puerto Rico and always knew that I would want my children to grow up here. I love the rich culture, the loving and giving nature of the Puerto Ricans and the beauty of this incredible island. Because we love where we live, we enjoy showing our guests the island and knowing that they will leave loving the island like we do.

What makes this house unique

There are two houses on the property and an art studio. We also live on the property which allows us to be of service to our guests. We have an amazing view of 'El Yunque' and are surrounded by nature. There is an amazing array of night sounds, that include coqui's, owls and soothing rainforest showers. Hacienda Rosa offers guests a true rainforest experience with family hospitality.

Simply perect!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at several rentals and hotels in Puerto Rico and Hacienda Rosa was, hands down, our favorite.

The house was very secluded and peaceful. A quick drive up the mountain and only a few km outside the limits of El Yunque, the views are spectacular!

The house was very clean and comfortable. It had everything we needed and was meticulously maintained. The grounds were beautiful, with fruit trees and tropical flowers all around the property and were also very well maintained.

Day or night, the song of the wildlife was soothing and relaxing. At night the coqui were abundant and we made a game of trying to spot them with our kids. The screech owl and other night birds made for some interesting noises as well.

All day long we watched bananaquits building a best in a tree, watched hummingbirds visit the flowers, and spotted the rainbows that came after the rain. Pure relaxation!

The owners were just down the driveway if we needed anything but they gave us ample privacy. Monica offered to pick up some groceries for us for our arrival since we came in on Thanksgiving. She also provided us with eggs from their chickens - the most delicious eggs! - and fruit from their gardens. They were very welcoming and accommodating.

We had a wonderful vacation and cannot wait to return!

Excellent place, wonderful owners

  • 5 of 5

Our dealing with the owner was fantastic beginning to end. The property is simple, clean and well kept. The views are amazing and the nearby stream and rope swing was a highlight of the trip. The fresh fruit and eggs were a wonderful treat. It is off the beaten path and quiet. Thank you so much Monica, if we find ourselves in the area again, we will look you up.

Perfect Rainforest Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had the best time here on the side of the mountain. Pictures really don't do this place justice! The house was perfect for our group of 7, and we were fairly close to the beach, bars, and not too far from Old San Juan and the airport. Monica was very sweet and accommodating. She has a whole book full of recommendations and directions, and she even brought us fresh fruit and eggs! The toilet took some getting used to since you couldn't flush any toilet paper, and there was no A/C in the house, so it might be tough for those who are used to cooler climates. We are from Texas, so we're used to the heat, but I believe we came to Puerto Rico at a very humid time. It was cool enough at night to sleep with the windows open (they do have screens), and Monica provided plenty of fans. We loved eating breakfast and drinking mimosas on the side porch overlooking the rainforest. The view from the porch is absolutely breathtaking! I would definitely recommend staying here whether you have a group or just a couple. Whether you are looking to get away from the noise of the city, or seeking to be close to attractions, this is the perfect place because it's about 20 minutes to the beach/bars and 45 minutes from Old San Juan. You won't be far from Fajardo, where you can venture out to the islands by boat, and you are practically IN the rainforest. This place was awesome!

The best place to stay in Puerto Rico

  • 5 of 5

I regret only one thing - we rented this place for only 3 nights, I wish we could spend more time there. It's hard to understand by the pictures, but this house is great. Here are the reasons why:

1. Location. It's is in the heart of a rainforest. Really close to El Yunque National Forest, great beaches. At night you can hear tropical animals of a rainforest, it's truly a great experience.

2. The view. Nothing beats this view, it feels so good to start your day looking at the green mountains and tropical plants.

3. There is no one on the hill besides you. The owner has 7 acres of land and lives down the road, so no one disturbs you, just relax and enjoy the house.

4. The owner. Monica is an amazing host. She is so kind: met us in Luquillo and showed us the road to her house, brought us fresh eggs and fruit from her garden, gave lots of recommendations of the local places of interest and restaurants, arranged our New Year's dinner (found a caterer to cook us traditional food in less than one day).

5. The house itself. It is very comfortable and it has everything a traveler would need and even more.

Our stay in this place was a highlight of the whole trip, if I ever go to PR, I would only want to live in this place.

A spectacular view, a great location, and a thoughtful host!!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 7 (6 adults,1 child) visited Puerto Rico for the first time and spent the first 4 days of our vacation at Hacienda Rosa. It was perfect for us. The house's location is a wonderful base for exploring the area. We hiked in El Yunque, swam and lazed on the Luquillo beach (complete with pina coladas served in pineapples), ate at the Luquillo kiosks, zip lined, and toured the bioluminescent bay. And we never tired of the spectacular view of the rain forest from Hacienda Rosa. Every morning and every night we would drink in that view along with the wonderful forest sounds. Monica was a perfect host, very helpful with ideas and always available but unobtrusive. She met us in town so we could follow her to the house, which would've been hard to find otherwise. And, because we were arriving after dark, she offered to do some shopping for us ahead of time so we'd have breakfast food when we woke up. Thanks so much Monica! You made our stay so pleasant. We can't wait to return.
