About Monica Donaldson

I am a Montessori preschool teacher and my husband is an artist. We have three children two of whom are with us and the oldest is currently living in California. Having a vacation rental is a new venture for us. We are very excited to share our home with others. I grew up on this property with my parents and grandparents, I have to say that my grandfather was an inspiration to me. He loved this land and he taught me how to love and appreciate the land like he did. For that I am grateful, and blessed that I can share it with others.

Monica Donaldson purchased this house in 1978

Why Monica Donaldson chose Luquillo

My husband and I together have been living in Puerto Rico for over 30 years. I grew up in Puerto Rico and always knew that I would want my children to grow up here. I love the rich culture, the loving and giving nature of the Puerto Ricans and the beauty of this incredible island. Because we love where we live, we enjoy showing our guests the island and knowing that they will leave loving the island like we do.

What makes this house unique

There are two houses on the property and an art studio. We also live on the property which allows us to be of service to our guests. We have an amazing view of 'El Yunque' and are surrounded by nature. There is an amazing array of night sounds, that include coqui's, owls and soothing rainforest showers. Hacienda Rosa offers guests a true rainforest experience with family hospitality.

Absolutely Unbelievable!

  • 5 of 5

Staying here was the highlight of our trip to Puerto Rico. We stayed here after a night in San Juan and a few nights in Vieques. After arriving back from Vieques on the ferry, it was quick and easy to get to the house. The hosts were extremely gracious, and made us feel perfectly comfortable.

THE VIEW - Unmatched to any place I have stayed at. Because the house sits on the top of a hill, you get a perfect view of the mountains, all while overlooking miles and miles of rainforest. We watched hundreds of birds fly through the rainforest throughout the day. We even spotted 8 Puerto Rican parrots! These birds are endangered in Puerto Rico, so we were shocked to see so many. This is a view that I will never forget.

THE PROPERTY - The flowers and vegetation around the property are stunning. I must've taken 500 photos of the various plants. Our hosts were so generous and let us pick fresh eggs from the chicken coop in the morning, which coupled with the view, made for unforgettable breakfasts. The property is well maintained and similar to a botanical garden (in my opinion), but you can take 2 steps off the manicured part of the property and feel completely immersed into a jungle.

THE HOUSE - sits on the top of a hill, which makes it feel very private without sacrificing any views. It has a bungalow vibe to it, and is very, very clean and well kept. Monica was sweet enough to put fresh flowers from her yard all around the house. The exotic flora from their yard makes the most stunning and unusual flower arrangements. The first few days, my husband and I stayed there with 3 other friends and had a wonderful time spending nights cooking relaxed dinners and laughing on the porch and then happily falling asleep to the sound of the frogs. My husband and I loved the place so much we ended up booking another 2 nights to celebrate our anniversary. The house was perfect for both scenarios.

THE SURROUNDINGS: El Yunque Rainforest is incredible. I suggest taking at least 3 full days to explore the rainforest if possible. Waterfalls, beautiful rivers, swimming holes, incredible plant life, rewarding hike views....the list goes on.

I can't say enough positive things about this property - my friends and I are still talking about how amazing this place was. My only regret is that we didn't have more time there. After a few days of relaxing, taking in the view and exploring, I felt completely rejuvenated. We cannot wait to stay here again!

Totally awesome!

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED staying at the charming Rosa Hacienda. We couldn't have picked a better place to stay! We did some hiking in the close-by rain forest in the mornings and spent afternoons by the beach.

Monica is the best host; she shared fresh eggs and various fruits with us. We loved eating outside every day on the side porch overlooking the rainforest. The surroundings are fabulous! Everything was great! Thank you:)

Beautiful beyond description!

The sights and the sounds of this rainforest retreat are amazing! Words cannot describe how beautiful this place is. If I could do it over, I would stay longer and spend more time just sitting and enjoying the view. This is place I definitely want to come back to.

Simply perect!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at several rentals and hotels in Puerto Rico and Hacienda Rosa was, hands down, our favorite.

The house was very secluded and peaceful. A quick drive up the mountain and only a few km outside the limits of El Yunque, the views are spectacular!

The house was very clean and comfortable. It had everything we needed and was meticulously maintained. The grounds were beautiful, with fruit trees and tropical flowers all around the property and were also very well maintained.

Day or night, the song of the wildlife was soothing and relaxing. At night the coqui were abundant and we made a game of trying to spot them with our kids. The screech owl and other night birds made for some interesting noises as well.

All day long we watched bananaquits building a best in a tree, watched hummingbirds visit the flowers, and spotted the rainbows that came after the rain. Pure relaxation!

The owners were just down the driveway if we needed anything but they gave us ample privacy. Monica offered to pick up some groceries for us for our arrival since we came in on Thanksgiving. She also provided us with eggs from their chickens - the most delicious eggs! - and fruit from their gardens. They were very welcoming and accommodating.

We had a wonderful vacation and cannot wait to return!

Excellent place, wonderful owners

  • 5 of 5

Our dealing with the owner was fantastic beginning to end. The property is simple, clean and well kept. The views are amazing and the nearby stream and rope swing was a highlight of the trip. The fresh fruit and eggs were a wonderful treat. It is off the beaten path and quiet. Thank you so much Monica, if we find ourselves in the area again, we will look you up.

Perfect Rainforest Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had the best time here on the side of the mountain. Pictures really don't do this place justice! The house was perfect for our group of 7, and we were fairly close to the beach, bars, and not too far from Old San Juan and the airport. Monica was very sweet and accommodating. She has a whole book full of recommendations and directions, and she even brought us fresh fruit and eggs! The toilet took some getting used to since you couldn't flush any toilet paper, and there was no A/C in the house, so it might be tough for those who are used to cooler climates. We are from Texas, so we're used to the heat, but I believe we came to Puerto Rico at a very humid time. It was cool enough at night to sleep with the windows open (they do have screens), and Monica provided plenty of fans. We loved eating breakfast and drinking mimosas on the side porch overlooking the rainforest. The view from the porch is absolutely breathtaking! I would definitely recommend staying here whether you have a group or just a couple. Whether you are looking to get away from the noise of the city, or seeking to be close to attractions, this is the perfect place because it's about 20 minutes to the beach/bars and 45 minutes from Old San Juan. You won't be far from Fajardo, where you can venture out to the islands by boat, and you are practically IN the rainforest. This place was awesome!
