The Castle...A Luxurious Vacation At Reasonable Cost

Bedrooms 4
Half Baths1
Space 3,600 sq. ft.
Property type castle
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

4 Bedroom, 3 1/2 Baths Centrally Located In Upscale Subdivision

4 Bedroom, 3 1/2 Baths with wrought iron balcony furnished with taste of New Orleans and french decor. Beautiful area to walk in across the street from University of New Orleans Lake Front, 2 Blocks from Lake Pontchartrain, 3 bedrooms have their private bathrooms, enjoy the luxury of a Greek shower in the master suite, and private courtyard/atrium. The house is so typical of the New Orleans architecture with the house built around an open courtyard and windows for walls on 3 sides of the open area. This arrangement gives you the feel of living outside but the benefits of being in the regulated temperature. The family room offers relaxing comfort in the leather couch and recliners arranged to view the large flat screen TV with Direct TV satellite service. The neighborhood is perfect for taking a nice morning walk through the area with each house distinctive and custom built and viewing the beautiful landscaping they offer. And if you would rather stroll along the seawall of Lake Ponchartrain, you would have but a short 3-4 block walk to get to the Lake. You can then stroll for miles along the seawall, watch the fishermen, the seagulls, pelicans, ducks and enjoy the Lake breeze. The location also lends itself to taking bus 55 on Elysian Fields which will take you to the French Market, Café Du Monde, Jackson Square, or Canal Street without having to transfer or change buses. The ride is only about 15 minutes. Then if you want to transfer, for the same price you can catch the streetcar and travel up through the Garden District all the way to Audubon Park and the Zoo. It lets you be in the middle of all the activity when you choose to be, but then able to enjoy the peace and tranquility when that mood strikes you.

About Jean Lake

Grew up in New Orleans, attended high school there. Now living in St. Louis doing property management. But New Orleans will always be my home. Once you've been there you always miss it and want to return. I still have many old friends there and some relatives. I love to go antique and flea market shopping. I lived in France for a year many years ago and still love all things French.

Jean Lake purchased this castle in 2009

Why Jean Lake chose Lake Terrace - Oaks

The Castle has good energy; very peaceful, quiet, and not just a place to stay but is an event in itself. It is filled with my favorite things that remind me of Old New Orleans or Europe, particularly France. The private courtyard is something that is typical of New Orleans but not often found in the more modern architecture. Its located very convenient to the French Quarter by car or by bus, but yet it is in a neighborhood with schools, grocery stores, restaurants and other amenities not found in the middle of town.

What makes this castle unique

When youy walk into the foyer through the massive front door and see the slate floor, the beautiful glass walls looking into the courtyard you will surely fall in love with The Castle as I did. Then the twin staircases going up to the loft and looking down on the typical Old New Orleans twin chandeliers add such unique beauty and character to the home. The Greek Shower Room off the master bedroom is a relaxing retreat from all the excitement and partying you will experience in the Big Easy. You will experience the beauty of things from long ago with the conveniences of the modern day.

Celebrated daughters 50 th birthday

  • 5 of 5

The property was excellent and very spacious. My family of 7 stayed 3 days and had a great time. The property is located in a great area

Well worth the rent we paid and received our deposit back in less than 2 weeks.

Air quality could be improved but didn't effect us at any rate.

Christmas Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We met our kids in NOLA for the Christmas weekend. The house was amazing. We had a wonderful time. It was easy to get uber to go to the Quarter and a great space to relax for the rest of the time. Would definitely book this property again.

Great time at The Castle!

  • 5 of 5

We had 8 people staying at the Castle over Halloween weekend celebrating a birthday. The house had more than enough room for all 8 of us (there was even a room we noticed we hadn't even been in when packing to leave the house it was so big). The courtyard in the center of the house was a definite perk! It had everything we needed provided, the only things we noticed were a few more towels would have been useful, there weren't enough for everyone, and a BBQ would have been nice but we made do without. Outside of those 2 small things everything was perfect, the greek shower was a nice touch, it's certainly a unique house! The owner Jean was very good about accommodating our arrival and departure schedule and was very quick to reply to emails and questions which was greatly appreciated! The restaurant a few blocks down 'Munch Factory' is a great choice if you're looking for a dinner out, within walking distance and the food was excellent. Would definitely recommend this house, we would stay here again if we returned to New Orleans.

Family Vacation in New Orleans Sep 2016

  • 4 of 5

The castle was perfectly adequate for our family of seven adults spending a week in New Orleans. The unique floor plan and extraordinary furnishings inspired us to take many pictures every day we were there. What you see on VRBO is real............and yes it is very attractive. After being there a few days it became apparent that this home was extraordinarily beautiful in its day, but now needs a little TLC. The courtyard vegetation and pools would be breath taking if they were cleaned up and functioning. The local rental agent, "Sasha" was friendly and very helpful. All in all we were very pleased with our stay, and encourage anyone looking at this home to go ahead and rent it because you will not be disappointed.

I have to say that our main disappointment came while reserving the home on VRBO. We have used VRBO quite a number of times in the past and have been very pleased. In the process of being on line to rent this home, the process became a little difficult so I clicked on the "need help" 800 phone number that was on the screen. When I called, and asked a few questions about the rental, the person who answered the phone was very abrupt and asked me, Do you want this property or not? Towards the end of the call I asked why the total rental price she quoted was higher than advertised, (which I was not told in advance), she said that using the "need help" phone number added $165 "Customer Service Fee" to our rental fee, and another $25 was added as an "Extra Person Fee". Neither of these additional charges was listed on the VRBO website. So, my primary comment and concern is with the VRBO and the people they used to reserve my rental VRBO. In the past I have been very pleased with VRBO, and I hope use them again, and I want them to succeed in the future.

The Castle - A Truly Unique Property

  • 4 of 5

The Castle is a truly unique property and provides for a vacation experience that you will not soon forget. At first, I thought the location would be out of the way, but that proved to not be the case. If you have a car and avoid the rush hour traffic you can get almost anywhere in 20-25 minutes and that includes Metairie, Kenner, or the New Orleans airport either using the interstate or the back roads driving along the Lakefront which is a lovely drive. If you don't have a car, the bus gets you to the French Quarter and downtown with its many attractions in about 15 minutes. The bus stop is right by the house. There is a grocery store, a coffee shop and a drug store within walking distance. My son and I walked each morning to get our coffee fix. The grass field at the entrance to the University of New Orleans provided a playground for the grandkids to play catch and expend energy. While we didn't need any assistance, it was nice to know that the owners representative lives only 2 doors down the street. The courtyard is lovely and we would have spent more time there if we were not on vacation when the great rains came. I would recommend this property to anyone. New Orleans is a unique city and this home, with its furnishings, captures some of the uniqueness that is a part of the New Orleans experience. Our stay August 11-18, 2016 Jan and C. J. Cambre
