Overview

About the property

Handcrafted Log Cottage and separate Studio Apartment nestled among the trees.

'The Moose Lodge' is a beautiful log building that sleeps 8. The classy rustic decor creates a very special atmosphere. The loft area has a Queen Bed and ensuite. There is a Queen size day bed on the main floor. A spiral staircase leads down to a spacious bedroom in the basement with 2 twin beds. The stair well room has additional sleeping options, The fully equipped kitchen includes a partially stocked pantry. Large windows and decks ensure that you enjoy the ever changing moods of the ocean and mountains.

You may see moose wander through the yard, eagles flying overhead, seals and sea otters swimming in front of your living room windows.

The Bears Den, an adjacent cabin, that can be booked for an additional $75 per night, has a Queen bed on the main floor and a sleeping loft upstairs (great for the kids!). The den occupants have their own full bathroom. Kitchen facilities include refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot and hot plate.

Because of the 20 foot unstable bluff on the front edge of the property, there is unfortunately no direct access to the beach. It can be accessed by car 1 mile east. But really the best sandy beaches are Mariner Park (2 miles away, first right on the Spit Road) or Bishops Beach (4 miles away accessed through Old Towne).

About Ruth Dickerson

We, Sam & Marilyn, first visited Homer in 1974 and made it our home in 1976. We enjoyed raising our 2 children and 2 adopted native children in this small community setting.

We have been involved in establishing a successful construction company, dabbled in commercial fishing and our adopted son 'Captain' Willie now helps to run our Fishing Charter business - Reel Fun Charters.

The property is managed by our friend Ruth. Proud to be a Kiwi, but she has lived in Homer for 30 years now. She raised her 3 children here and has hiked, biked, rafted and paddled her way through much of Alaska and beyond.

Ruth Dickerson purchased this house in 2013

Why Ruth Dickerson chose Homer

When we first visited this property, we were awed by the sense of peacefulness that surrounded us. The craftsmanship of the woodwork and the inspiring views are delightful and capture much of what we love about Alaska. We enjoyed upgrading some of the features to create a real gem of a place that we are excited to share with others who choose to visit.

The location, so close to all the amenities and tourist attractions, makes this property so ideal for your vacation.

What makes this house unique

The 2 buildings are nestled among the trees on 1 1/2 acres with full southern exposure to capture the sun. There is a great feeling of seclusion, yet it's so close to the many attractions of Homer! The expansive deck and front lawn make a wonderful place to relax - right on the water's edge - while you marvel at the drop-dead-gorgous view of the rugged mountains and glaciers across the bay.

Done with relaxing? Just 1/2 mile away the Bay Club offers a full range of exercise opportunities including a pool and racquetball courts. The paved spit trail, 1 mile away, is ideal for walking, biking and rollerblading or enjoy wandering along the beach at low tide.

Grocery stores, banks, museums, galleries and several notable restaurants are all within 3 miles.

Wonderful Thanksgiving

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in over Thanksgiving and couldn't have had a better time. We had nine people, from ages one to 80, and all fit comfortably in the house and cabin. The accommodations were perfect - warm and cozy and the world's best view. Also, Ruth is wonderful! Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

The property was awesome with beautiful views. We had the additional cabin which slept 2 of our party and that worked out fine. Cabin was stocked appropriately for essentials and also was clean. The beds were comfortable. The only concern we had were the spiral stairs down to the additional rooms were narrow with a tight curve which made it semi difficult for a person in our party with a bad leg. Otherwise we were very pleased with the cabin and would definitely recommend.

Beautiful spot with true cabin character

  • 5 of 5

We had a destination wedding here. Ruth went above and beyond to accommodate us, even when I made an error in the dates! The property is rustic but has modern conveniences. It feels cozy yet has lots of sleeping options. We have beautiful wedding photos and memories.

Perfect vacation rental

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay here, easy, no nonsense check-in and access. Lots of provisions in the pantry so you didn't have to purchase everything for cooking. Two bathrooms made it nice for our group of 5 to shower up. Our adult son who ended up sleeping on one of the twin beds downstairs said he wasn't comfortable. But that bed did have a memory foam pad on it. My husband and I chose the king bed in the basement and it was nice and cool and room darkening shades for sleeping but the loft area was the most beautiful and we only chose the basement because the loft didn't have shades. My son and his gf slept there and didn't seem to mind the lack of shades. So I would say the place is great for two couples and 2-4 children. Elderly may have difficulty with either stairway, especially the spiral one, but there is also a hideabed in the living room, but no blinds there. The windows there are large and let in lots of of daylight, great during day, not great at night. It would be nice to have more pillows too, but we are pillow hoarders. Ruth stopped in to meet us and see if we needed anything, she was very nice and accomodating.

There are two bikes and also a lock for them on the property, that was great, if you aren't a runner you can still get out and explore. We were on the busy road and there is no shoulder for running, but we did fine, the traffic was courteous overall. We were 5-10 min. From the Spit, groceries, restaurants, gas station... no problems finding anything at all! We would definitely recommend this cabin for anyone coming into Homer on an Alaska getaway. Thank you Ruth!

Owner's Response: Oh yes, we talked about replacing that one bed ... better get with it. Wish he had chosen the other one. Sorry folks, it would be about impossible to have shades on all the high triangular windows, and our summer days are SO long. The best we can do is provide eye shades. Not a problem in the winter ...
