McCaskill Cottage

Charming, circa 1905, 'McCaskill Cottage' is located in the heart of Old Town. You will not need a car to go out for drinks and dinner or local shopping. The Carolina Hotel and Spa and the Pine Crest Inn are just one block away, and its only two blocks to the fine Village restaurants. A leisurely five block walk takes you to Pinehurst Country Club and its dining and golf facilities. .

McCaskill Cottage is beautifully decorated with tasteful wall and window coverings and paintings. The floors are the original 'heart pine' with occasional oriental carpets. An exquisite dining room with chandelier opens into an updated, well provisioned eclectic kitchen with island, a fun gathering place for preparing gourmet meals. There are Mexican tile floors in the kitchen which extend into the pantry and laundry room, and into a private wi-fi office overlooking the screened porch and swimming pool. Four bedrooms with antique colonial beds and furnishings provide comfortable sleeping for all.

The property has large well landscaped grounds with three porches: a covered veranda in front, an open porch with pergola on the south side, and a large screened porch in the rear. The gardens have antique brick paths weaving through several arbors and gazebos with numerous rhododendrons, azaleas, dogwoods, nandinas and flowers of all types. The beautiful and private in-ground swimming pool overlooks a grape arbor which serves as the portal to the back yard recreation area where guests can enjoy ping pong or horseshoes and a sand box for kids.

Why john marcum chose Old Town

Our house was originally owned by the Tufts family, the founders of Pinehurst, who sold it to our family in the 30's where it has remained. Having lived all over the world, we keep returning to Pinehurst, which is truly remarkable in having retained its unique charm and status as the Capital of Golf in the US.

Quaint, in-town cottage!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second year at the cottage - great location, pool was awesome for late afternoon cool-down! Walk to downtown or stay home and enjoy the quiet, beautiful setting. See you next year - Thanks John!

Amazing Historic Cottage in Beautiful Quiet Neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

We spent the weekend here with my family following a graduation in the area. The pool was a perfect spot for us all to gather and bond in a quiet and peaceful environment. The cottage is an older historic building, but very well kept. The kitchen is extremely well stocked with utensils and cooking appliances, and the backyard was a perfect place for family activities. Thanks for the opportunity to stay!

Lovely quaint cottage house in the Village of Pinehurst - and the pool is lovely!

  • 4 of 5

We recently rented McCaskill cottage for a long weekend with other family - it was perfect for us! We brought our 17 month-old daughter and stayed in the king master bedroom which was huge and comfortable, the room even had a little nook to put her pack n play for naps and bedtime. The pool was wonderful and we swam in it multiple times a day. We also barbecued outside most nights, was such a nice place to pass the time. The rest of the family reported that all the beds were comfortable. The kitchen, though a bit small for a big family (everyone loves to hang out in the kitchen.....) was fully equipped with plenty of cookware and serving bowls etc. The house is not updated, but it is clean and charming. The location was just perfect, only a few minutes walk from Village shops and restaurants. We will definitely be renting this place for our large family again the next time we visit Pinehurst!

Excellent family or golfers location!

  • 5 of 5

This house is suitable for both golfing groups or family vacations. The pool at the the rear of the property is a fantastic amenity along with the hidden sandbox and outdoor table tennis. The area with the screen doors and windows at the rear was also ideal for a few drinks at night. Beds were comfortable and house was clean. Could not have asked for much more! John (owner) was a gentleman and let a number of our party check-in early and check-out late based on flight times. Overall, it was an excellent experience.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay! McCaskill Cottage dates back to the first houses built in Pinehust and its in-town location, 4 bedrooms, lovely pool and grounds are unmatched in the Village. I appreciate your checking with me re check-in and out times. It’ was a pleasure to help and I hope you’ll come back again.

Great place to stay in the Village of Pinehurst

  • 4 of 5

Renting this historic home was such a treat for our family. We walked in the Village Arboretum daily and took the easy walk to the downtown Village for coffee and lunch. The pool was unavailable for a few days but the owner had his crew working hard to replace the pump. A great time and we would certainly rent 40 Caddell again.

Sincerely, Ray and Nancy Fiorillo

Pool inoperable/unusable. 1 fewer double bed than advertised. Dirty. Owner did not address when told

  • 1 of 5

We were quite disappointed to find a guest had to sleep on the floor since 1 less bed than advertised. Owner said "oh, I must have forgotten to update website". Totally non-responsive to the concern- made no effort to mitigate. Also upon arrival, found the pool hazy / dirty and when owner contacted he indicated the pump broke on Saturday (2 days before our Monday arrival) and he was alerted by his pool maintenance company. They did not arrive with parts to fix pool til Wednesday and informed us that it could have been fixed Saturday except that the owner wanted to save money by sourcing used parts vs new parts. They installed the used parts advising the pool could be used the next day (thursday) however, those parts failed and the pool was never operable/ useable during our entire stay. Finally, the place is dirty. Linens were clean but the rest of the place hasn't been deeply cleaned for sometime. Very very disappointing and ruined our vacation.
