About Susan Hillman

Sue is a retired professor, author and physical therapist. Bob is a retired construction manager. We came from Phoenix to enjoy our retirement near the beach. We love Tamarindo.

Susan Hillman purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Susan Hillman chose Guanacaste

The four cabins are very well made and cozy places to rest and rejuvenate. We try to insure you have everything you need for a great stay.

What makes this cabin unique

Staying in the cabins gives you room for four adults and the privacy of having your own home for vacation, but much less cost than renting a mini-mansion! Vacation means you will be out enjoying the town and the country and this is the perfect venue for that!

Cozy, quiet, comfortable, safe.

Great location, comfortable bed, powerful outdoor shower, nice new gas stove, helpful neighbours, and within walking distance of everything! Sue and Bob made everything easy.

Ehhhh nicer places available. Private safe, close to town and beach. Noisy,

  • 2 of 5

Very noisy had a few issues. The one morning We weren't woken at 7 by the construction next door, constant grinding noise, we were awoken by I guess the help raking rocks at 1/4 to 7. Yikes.

Covered in bed bug bites, I can't reccomend the property. We got into town with No direction or instruction to property. Shower needed updating as it was spraying water everywhere.

Very private very safe.... We think. Great proximity to town, but between consecutive awakening to construction or help noise. I couldn't relax early or a t the condo / cabin at all. Not what I was looking for. Guy was raking rocks.... At 6:45 am.... Like huh ???

Ac worked well upstairs but after all the bed bug bites I elected to sleep downstairs. Which was inconvenient. For 4 of us.

Wifi was in and out, but all in all would not go back.

Owner's Response: It's amazing that even though we live in the cabin next door to where Eric stayed, he never said a word to us in person about these complaints. Not a single word. We cannot control the noise that our neighbors make with regard to occasional construction, We also have never had a single complaint from any other guests with regards to bed bugs. We suspect that Eric probably experienced some mosquito bites, while he was outside, which can happen here if you don't apply bug spray. We have the cabins treated for insects once a month, and have done so since we bought the property. Again, we have never had a complaint from any prior guests We suspected that Eric would be a problem when after waiting for him for two hours, after the time he told us he would arrive, he wrote us an email saying we were very unprofessional because he was lost and could not find the property. Prior to that, he never asked for directions. We have two maps to get to the property posted on the VRBO site, and unless someone asks for directions, we cannot know if they are experiencing difficulty finding our property. We responded to his plea for help to find the cabins within 10 minutes of the email. When he finally arrived, the first thing they pulled out of their rental car were two cases of beer, bragging that they had started drinking shortly after getting their car around 2:30 pm. It was now 7:00 pm. He had told us they would arrive at the cabins around 4:30. He admitted he was intoxicated, and said he had gotten lost. It's a shame that some people cannot communicate their problems directly, and feel they have to hide behind email. It makes us wonder if there really were problems at all.

Great location, comfy cabinas and wonderful hosts

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent the month of January 2016 at Cabinas Azul and would highly recommend this location to anyone looking for affordable, self-sufficient accommodations. We were just a short walk to the beach and the main downtown area.

The cabins are great for couples, small families and groups of friends who want to enjoy Tamarindo's many eating establishments while also having the option of preparing some meals on their own. Bob and Sue are always on hand to help out in any way they can, and their local knowledge comes in especially handy for first-time visitors like us. Hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did.

Just Perfect

  • 5 of 5

Cabinas Azul provided a great start on our Costa Rica adventure. The location was perfect, really close to the beach and center of town. The amenities were great, fully equipped kitchen, powerful AC in the room, fast internet. However, while I am sure you can find similar accommodations elsewhere, what you cannot find anywhere else are the owners Sue and Bob. They were kind, helpful and they made our transition to vacation mode happen instantly. They put so much care into the cabins and their guests that they are truly what made our time so remarkable. Also, as a side note, there was not a single bug in our cabin and we felt very safe there!

Great hosts, great cabin

  • 5 of 5

Bob and Sue were very helpful and accommodating and the cabin was close to the beach and the main shopping areas. The place was very secure and I felt safe there. I recommend this property for people considering expatriating so they can feel the vibe and get info and advice from other expats.

our experience 5/5! great location!

  • 5 of 5

We recently returned from a wonderful month + stay at Cabinas Madera Azul. Bob and Sue, the owners, could not have been more helpful and accommodating while we were were there. The cabin had everything we needed and we loved the location, being a 5 minute walk from the beach, Saturday market, restaurants and shops. If you are looking for a place that make you feel like you are visiting friends/family and yet, have your own cabin/cottage, then we would recommend it. The grounds are lovely and treed and there is a brick BBQ grill for cooking outside. Also, great wi fi service to stay in touch with Canadian weather LOL !
