About the Property
Historic Loft Apt in Downtown Basalt - 2 bdrm, sleeps 6
OUR PENTHOUSE APARTMENT
The street level of our historic building was built in 1890 as a general store, which sold dry goods, groceries and horse wagons. It now houses the ‘Brick Pony Restaurant” which is the locals favorite restaurant and watering hole.
The second story of our Historical W.W. Frey building features our fabulous penthouse apartment, which was completely, lovingly and authentically renovated in the summer of 2013. It is city loft living at its best. Soaring 19’ ceilings, original brick walls, hardwood floors and upscale, sophisticated touches throughout. Signed and numbered prints by Todd White (the creator of “Sponge Bob SquarePants”) are displayed in a galley-like arrangement on 100-year old brick walls. Original paintings by Earl Biss decorate the bunk room and hallway. Watch the street activity or play backgammon and checkers at the antique game table overlooking the main street of Basalt. The dining room table, buffet and hutch are heirlooms from early 1900’s. The open kitchen is a cook’s delight and features grey quartz countertops, new stainless appliances and floating wall shelves, which display dishes, stemware and serving pieces. All of the cabinet hardware pulls are actual railroad spikes to further showcase the town’s early railroad history. The pantry is fully stocked with staples and spices. …including small appliances such as a Mixmaster, Cuisinart and juicers…..everything you need to host a fine culinary evening for family and friends. An oversized bathroom features a walk-in shower, claw foot soaking tub, an antique double vanity and antique hutch. The master bedroom features luxurious linens, a very large armoire with 8 drawers and a closet for your personal use. The unique bunk room is compact yet sleeps an additional 4 people.
The entire building, distinguished by its decorative ironwork, recessed restaurant doorway and original tin ceiling is one of Basalt’s best examples of the turn-of-the-century architecture that embodies the spirit of the “Old West”. Look for bullet holes that still decorate the restaurant tin ceiling and buckshot marks at the apartment entrance! Our apartment is located in the heart of downtown on main street and you can view the activity, vitality and excitement that this downtown location offers so there can be some restaurant and street noise from time to time. When we are here we like to sit at the game table that overlooks the main street, open the windows and listen to the music drift up and observe the happenings. We have Apple TV as well as Netflix for your enjoyment.
Also provided is underground, heated and secure locked parking across the street.
The outdoor activities are unlimited…they include biking, golfing, fishing, skiing, ice skating, horseback riding, hiking, birding, snowmobiling and skiing. Perfectly situated, Basalt is minutes from Snowmass and Aspen, yet a world away in pricing. Enjoy year round mineral baths with the Hot Springs in Glenwood, also minutes down valley.
SKIING - AJAX/HIGHLANDS/SNOWMASS/BUTTERMILK - minutes up valley, made even easier if you take the bus. SUNLIGHT is 30 minutes down valley. BEAVER CREEK and VAIL are about an hour away.
BIKING - We are in the middle of the Roaring Fork Valley with easy access to bike paths to Aspen, Woody Creek and Glenwood Springs. Buses can carry your bikes back if you had too much biking fun!
CROWN MOUNTAIN PARK - 3 miles down valley. Features walking paths, tennis, biking, soccer fields, horseshoes and a dog park. Gorgeous mountain views with just a short trek to the river. Across the highway are bowling, antique stores and an upscale nursery.
GOLF - Four public courses within a 10-30 minute drive. Aspen Municipal, River Valley Ranch, Iron Bridge and Lakota Canyon.
WILLITS SHOPPING CENTER - Less than 3 miles down valley. This complex features, Whole Foods, Starbucks, Susie's Consignment Shop, 3 restaurants, a yogurt store, hair salon, Bristle Cone Sporting Goods and so much more.
If you want to be in the midst of activity ……..steps away from the convergence of two gold-medal fishing rivers, and in the exact heart of downtown Basalt’s restaurants, quaint shops, art galleries, summer street fairs and farmer’s markets….then this is the sophisticated penthouse apartment for you.

Located in the middle of Downtown Basalt at the center of Midland Avenue. This is Basalt's main street where dining, shopping and the convergence of the Frying Pan River and Roaring Fork Rivers are just steps away!
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: I grew up in Denver moved here in 2000. I purchased the Bistro Basalt restaurant which was the locals gathering spot because I fell in love with the building and the history behind it. We sold the restaurant after 7 years of operating it but remain the owners of the building. It is the oldest and most gorgeous historical building located in the center of Midland avenue (our main street). The restaurant down stairs -The Brick Pony Pub, still remains the locals favorite.
Why the Owner Chose Basalt, CO, USA:
Location, location, location. A beautiful newly remodeled historical building in walking distance to everything Basalt has to offer. Winter activities and summer activities are endless. A few minutes drive to Aspen and 3 top rated ski hills and the exact point where two gold medal rivers converge.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
