The Solvang Studio is located in the heart of Santa Barbara County's acclaimed Santa Ynez Valley wine country (Remember the 2004 Oscar winning movie Sideways? It was filmed here!) If you’re seeking a postcard perfect year-round playground with warm, sunny days and crisp, clear nights; world-class wine tasting; bicycling and hiking with spectacular scenery; or outdoor fun such as boating, kayaking, horseback riding, golfing, and fishing—discover Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley! Just two hours up the coast from Los Angeles, it feels like a world away with amazing possibilities for your next getaway!
Did you know these fun facts about Solvang? In 1911, three Danish-American educators encountered a place in the Golden State where land was plentiful and their culture could prosper—and founded a community they named Solvang (sunny field in Danish). Only two hours up the coast from Los Angeles, and adjacent to the 1804 Old Mission Santa Inés (now a National Historic Landmark District), Solvang thrived and settlers carried on Danish traditions of language, folk dancing, music and cuisine. As the 20th century progressed and Solvang’s population grew, more buildings began to reflect Danish farm-style architecture. Just as it does in Copenhagen, Denmark’s national symbol of the “Little Mermaid” bronze sculpture (in ½ size authorized replica) welcomes visitors at the intersection of Mission Drive and Alisal Road. Windmills of all sizes catch the first and last light throughout the village. After the conclusion of World War II, idyllic Solvang was “discovered” by the media and described in the Saturday Evening Post as a “spotless Danish village that blooms like a rose” and enticed travelers to experience it for themselves. In 2013, Solvang was named by Huffington Post as the #2 place to 'Travel to Europe Without Leaving the USA.”
The Danish Days annual festival emerged in 1936 and continues to commemorate Solvang’s heritage every September. Festivals and celebrations are traditional parts of Solvang’s charm—from the Taste of Solvang every March and Julefest (Yule-fest) during December. Solvang was named by Time Magazine as one of the “Most Christmas-y Towns in the USA.” Discover more at the not-to-be-missed Elverhoj Museum of History & Art and the Hans Christian Andersen Museum as well as the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum and find where art and nature meet at the Wildling Museum.
Be drawn into Scandinavian culture strolling Solvang’s flower-lined streets or stepping into five authentic bakeries and more than 30 restaurants and cafes—featuring not only Danish cuisine but also wine-country, international and traditional American favorites. Dozens of wine and beer tasting rooms, wine bars and gourmet food shops tempt palates with the bounty of nearby vineyards and farms. For the area’s freshest fruits, veggies, flowers and local items, check out the downtown Farmers’ Market just one block from the studio-- every Wednesday afternoon year-round. And don’t miss the chance to experience a professional performance under summer stars at PCPA Theaterfest—in Solvang’s lovely 700-seat outdoor Festival Theater.
Turn in any direction within Solvang’s pedestrian-friendly village and delight in an array of colorful items such as clogs, hand-made lace, clothing, porcelain, elegant collectibles, beautifully crafted imports, vibrant arts and crafts, vibrant furnishings and classic toys in more than 100 one-of-a-kind stores, art galleries and antique centers. The primary retail areas are along Mission Drive, Copenhagen Drive, Alisal Road and charming side streets beckon with wonderful clusters of shops in courtyards and squares. Come experience the joys of “California’s Little Denmark” for yourself!
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: 'This was an historic house (built in the 1930's) with multiple add-ons throughout the years. I purchased it in 2007 and rebuilt it into an upscale dental office for my private practice with an attached studio apartment. It was rented on a yearly basis until recently when the tenant moved to a job in Northern California. I looked at the space and realized what a unique and wonderful vacation rental it would be for those visiting Solvang. Come experience this studio for yourself!
Why the Owner Chose Solvang, CA, USA:
The town has so much positive energy and many great places to explore! The Studio is only one block south of the Wednesday Farmer's Market which is a favorite place for me to go every week for fruits, veggies and flowers. Bring comfortable walking shoes, because everything is flat around here and it makes for glorious walking (and cycling too, bring your bikes or rent bicycles or segways just a block away).
The Unique Benefits at this Studio:
The best part of this space is that is not a hotel, motel, nor a garage make over. It is a unique upscale hideaway near downtown Solvang. It is only one block away from the Solvang Festival Theater (year-round concerts, plays and events) and fifty feet from a wonderful restaurants-- '1st and Oak'. Bike rentals are close by, Segway tours are available, it is one block away from a horse driven trolley, within three blocks of a micro brewery, one and half blocks from an Irish Pub, multiple wine tasting rooms plus lots of shopping. (Over 150 boutiques and no chain stores--they are not allowed by City Hall!) The Old Mission Santa Ines (only 3 blocks) is a must see, the Elverhoj Museum of History & Art is a treat and Hans Christian Anderson Park is a wonderful place to have a picnic and hike. I just love it here and I hope you will, too!
