Families will love:

• Perfect escape from the urban sprawl

• Pretty space aplenty for play and relaxation

• Perfect for a range of budgets

When Southern Californians want a quick escape from the urban sprawl of the lowlands, they head to the San Bernardino Mountains, where Big Bear Lake -- a city named after its signature body of water -- provides pretty space aplenty for play and relaxation.

The city, ranging in altitude from nearly 6,750 feet to 9,000 feet, is often abuzz with activity due to resorts, public parks and bays, and sites for tourists and locals -- at least on the lake's southern shores. The lake's North Shore is a good deal quieter. The manmade lake, as a whole, has more than 22 miles of shoreline.

Big Bear Lake is a gem, but its main thoroughfares aren't anything close to 'hidden.' Big Bear Blvd. and Lakeview Dr. can get jammed with traffic at times. Yet if tranquility is what you're seeking, you won't have to venture out far to find your pocket of peace on lake or trail.

For families, Big Bear Lake is a fantastic destination that can be enjoyed on a range of budgets. When snow is present, there's skiing, snowboarding, sledding and more. Come summertime, you can swim, boat, fish, hike, bike, mini-golf and then some.

Kids will be curious about the city and the lake's name. Yes, bears do roam the woods here, but only black bears these days and you're not likely to find them. But the grizzly -- not seen in the region since the early 1900's -- is the mammal credited for Big Bear Lake's name, due to encounters had by a team of men back in 1845 (when Big Bear Valley was known as Yuhaviat, a Serrano Indian word meaning 'Pine Place').

Why Boulder Bay? Read these reviews to find out:

“Boulder Beauty”

Reviewed November 27, 2013

The park has made viewing Boulder Bay much easier as you don't have to pull over and find a spot to park to enjoy the view. The city has apparently decided to let the brush on the side of the road grow to extreme heights so you cant really see much from the road. Being able to park and walk around is a great way to see the bay and take pictures.

“Very scenic and close to the road”

Reviewed October 30, 2013

The boulders are certainly a big part in and near the park, which is right off the road into the Big Bear Lake region. You can fish, kayak, walk, run or just take pictures like we did - very scenic all along the park which hugs the bay.

This was a lovely place to stop and take in the beauty of Big Bear lake. We drove around the lake & stopped here for a bit. Took lots of pictures. There are restrooms, benches to sit on and a nice grassy area. Very nice! Would highly recommend stopping here.

“A pretty place”

It's just a real pretty place to walk and get a great view of the lake. It's nice to take the kids and the pets to stroll and walk down the dock over the water.

“Nice park!”

Easy access, with fishing pier. You can rent kayaks nearby, and launch from this park. There was algae in the water near the shore, so it wouldn't be good for swimming here. Maybe if the lake was up, it wouldn't be bad.

“Cute park. Beautiful view”

This tiny park was created for chillaxin, taking pictures, and fishing… no other reasons are needed.

Short, squat boulders rest near the paths that criss-cross this park. In this small place, I always see at least 5 other people just relaxing on the grass snoozing, reading a book, or possibly meditating on the view because they forgot a camera.

Not only is this located near Big Bear Lake, but the views of the rounded boulders jutting up from the water is beautiful. The tiny pier is frequented by fishermen, but is also an ideal location to take photos of that little island made of boulders yards away.

It doesn’t look like you can launch water craft or go swimming at the park itself, but due to its proximity to marina-like area, I’m sure it’s easy enough to leave your car at this park and drag your butt to a different launching location.•

“Gorgeous park, caught some fish!”

Apparently this park area has been newly renovated and it's really nice! Lots of grassy areas and benches. Bathroom facility and a deck that we fished at. Caught one fish, the kids were ecstatic. The scenery was really nice. Parking was awful though, but we got lucky.

“Beautiful Park”

Wonderful addition to Big Bear Lake. Swimming Beach. Fishing area. Picnic space. And those wonderful boulders.

Visited September 2013

“Renovated park is beautiful”

The park is in boulder bay and has been renovated in the last couple of years. They added a dock for fisherman. This bay is the most photogenic spot on Big Bear Lake.

Manager info

Year Purchased: 2007

About: Growing up in the Inland Empire, I often went to "'the mountains" with my parents and sisters for summer vacations and Sunday picnics. My family has been enjoying Big Bear Lake since the 1920's! Five generations! My Dad told me stories about driving the Model A to Big Bear while Grandpa sat in the rumble seat! My grandfather's name was Louie and I imagine that the huge wooden bear in Boulder Bay Park was named after him! It may or may not be true!

Why Boulder Bay, Big Bear Lake, CA, USA:
Anyway, when I drive up the mountain, the closer I get to the lake, the more relaxed I become. By the time I see the lake, every little worry has vanished!! I love this little condo and many friends and family members have spent time there and loved it too!! Sitting by the lake in Boulder Bay Park is my favorite quiet time. My family, however, has outgrown this 'Little Nugget' so we have moved on to something a little larger.

The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
Big Bear Lake has become THE place to go on weekends! The newly renovated Village has so much to offer. Whether weekends or weekdays, there is always something happening! If quiet time and relaxation is what you prefer, the forest and lake and hiking trails are the best ever for getting close to nature. If you want a more active holiday of skiing, snowboarding, boating, will find that too! There is a skate park, movie theater, shopping, Discovery Center, zoo, golf course and countless other activities available for the entire family. What you seek, you shall find at Big Bear Lake! Boulder Bay Resort, where 'Little Nugget' condo is located is in a very picturesque and serene place! So whether you are with family, friends, or solo, you will feel surrounded by 'happy spirits'! If you choose to stay indoors, you'll find a fully-stocked kitchen for preparing meals, TVs & movies to watch by the fireplace, books, games, a toy chest full of things to keep your little ones occupied, and a pet-friendly environment. The complex is quiet and well-kept and steps away from Boulder Bay Market and Blanca and Pierre's Diner. Or if you feel like window-shopping, meeting people, or trying one of the fabulous restaurants, a car ride to the pet-friendly Village is about 5 minutes. The local people are friendly and welcoming and of many different styles and nationalities. Personally, I think Boulder Bay at Big Bear Lake is one of the best places on the planet! I have gone there many times with my family and friends and have made countless memories there! It's for this very reason that I go there often for alone time and rejuvenation! So when I say you will find what you are looking for at the Lake...I am certain that you will. May the forest be with you!
