Why leif elias chose Esperanza
We found the island of Vieques when our daughter decided to get married here in 2007. We just fell in love with Esperanza, the charming old fishing village seemed like the perfect place for our retirement. The island has so much to offer, beautiful pristine beaches, nightlife, and culture.
What makes this House unique
The close proximity, 1/2 mile, to the Malecon's beaches, Shops, and Restaurants is the reason that we fell in love with our house. We think you will too!

Great place great host
Great! Bruno was the best host !
Perfect island experience
Perfect small house for a small family of four. The kids shared the futon bed and loved playing in the hammock. We were able to enjoy short hikes to the Esperanza beach and a day hike to further beaches. Restaurants, groceries and a bakery was all in walking distance. Bruno was even able to drive us back to the ferry for 10$. Everything worked out great!
Positive Comments: The location was fabulous (very close walking distance to everything in town - beaches, restaurants, grocery store) and had some A/C in the bedroom. There was a washing machine outside that worked well for us and an outside shower available (we did not use) in addition to the indoor bathroom. There was good counter and table space for luggage and personal items and an abundance of bath and beach towels. The size for our family was perfect and the indoor hammock was a fun touch. Our host, Bruno, met us immediately upon our arrival and gave us a quick tour, also sharing local spots to visit.
Negative Comments: At some point during the tour, Bruno cut his foot (I commented on it a few minutes later) and I found 2 fresh blood stains on the 2 throw rugs in the bedroom. There were leaks on the floor under the kitchen counter and in the bathroom between the toilet and shower. The bathroom, kitchen dishrag and sponge were dirty. There was dirt and hair throughout the house, although the sheets and towels seemed to be clean. There was a queen air mattress advertised that we planned to use while there but it was punctured and unable to be repaired. It was our understanding that it was punctured by the previous guests and seemed out of control of our host although he seemed inconvenienced that we requested for him to attempt to repair it after he mentioned first that he would do so. While Bruno told us when we arrived to contact him anytime, he seemed very annoyed when we called him at 9:30pm (immediately after arriving back after dinner and a BioBay tour) to let him know about the dirt, roaches & roach excrement (including in the upper kitchen cabinets where the dishes are kept) and to request pillowcases and sheets for the futon (there were 4 of us) and some hand towels as there were none in the house. He said that he had cleaned the house and couldn't believe that we found it unsatisfactory. He also told me that he hoped I "worked through my anger issues" and seemed to think that we were being unreasonable about the roaches/excrement. We originally planned to stay 3 nights here while on Vieques, however, because of the uncleanliness and roaches/excrement in various places, we chose to leave after spending one uncomfortable night there. While we understand that some presence of insects is expected in a tropical location, it was obvious that the host did not have same perspective of cleanliness that most guests expect.
I'm so sorry you had such a negative experience! From our long history of positive reviews, it seems that you had a different expectation of the house and experience from the rest of our guests. I did make a point to call and check in with you when I heard you weren't happy, and I refunded the money for your stay. The happiness of our guests is top priority, but you had already checked out before I could help with your needs. I'm happy you found a place that was more suited to your liking, although I doubt in the same price point as our rental. Again, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the house, you seem to be an exception to a long satisfactory rental history.
Close proximity to restaurants and beach, great host.
My wife and I enjoyed our trip to Vieques. We felt at peace and it was a nice break from a busy stressful city life. Vieques has beautiful beaches and several nice restaurants in Esperanza. The house was nice. It has everything for a confortable stay.
Bruno our host was wonderful. He was helpful, kind and gave us good advice.
Hope to return soon.
Old coffee in coffee pot, lipstick on cup, leak under sink, very dirty and very dirty oven. Bottom of toilet leaked on floor, front door that would stick and not open, foul mouthed caretaker living upstairs, dirty yard, dirty rugs and roaches . Complained but nothing was done. After 2 and 1/2 weeks with 14 days to go I cancelled rest of stay. Unacceptable!
Comfortable beach getaway!
Can't beat the location! Fairly tidy one bedroom suite had everything we needed including laundry. Easy walk to absolutely everything yet off the main drag so nighttime for sleeping was quiet. Although the frogs will sing you to sleep. Nice long beach to walk and lots to do in the area. Bruno is the perfect host. There can meet him but never in your face. We would stay again.
