Post & Beam four level home with open floor plan in a sunny south-facing meadow
This 10+ acre private property is surrounded by gorgeous mountain, meadow, and forest views. The finished basement has a large TV/game room and walkout door to the outdoor stone patio and lawns. A gourmet kitchen and breakfast bar, dining room, living room, private bedroom with double bed, half-bath, porch, and large outdoor deck are on first level. A master bedroom with king bed and large closet; two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and closet, and one with two twin beds and closet; a full bathroom with deep porcelain tub, oversize custom tiled shower, and custom maple vanity comprise the second level. A ship's ladder provides access to the third level loft with one twin bed and built-in shelves and drawers.
The house is provided the best tasting and naturally cold water in all of Vermont from a deep bedrock well with a prolific yield.
The topmost ski lifts for Mad River Glen, Sugarbush North (Mount Ellen), and Sugarbush South (Lincoln Peak) are visible on the mountaintop ridge to the east. The Long Trail, a 275-mile hiking trail that extends the length of Vermont, from Massachusetts in the south to Canada in the north, crests the ridge and is accessed via the Jerusalem Trail, within walking distance.
The hardwood forest on and surrounding the property provides wonderful walking, hiking, and snowshoeing opportunities on woods roads, paths, and well-traveled deer trails. A mountain stream and Hallock Brook flow through the property. Mountain-biking can be had on the many dirt roads and trails in the vicinity. Road bicycling is very popular on nearby Route 17, mountain gaps, and the Champlain Valley to the west.

About Bill Norland
A lover of the outdoors, hiking, biking, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, fishing, entertaining, and relaxing, I moved back to Vermont following College and have an established professional career as a Hydrogeologist.
Bill Norland purchased this House in 1993
Why Bill Norland chose Starksboro
The quiet beauty and spectacular views attracted me to the undeveloped property during a walk with a friend in 1991. A few weeks later the 10+ acre property was listed for sale, and was then purchased in 1992 and developed with the Post & Beam home in 1993. I welcome you to enjoy the peace and quiet beauty of my mountain retreat.
What makes this House unique
With plenty of privacy and quiet, and the ever-changing seasonal mountain views, sunrises, and alpenglow sunsets, Sweet Mountain Retreat offers many nearby amenities as well. The bustling fun, excitement, and beauty of Burlington and its waterfront is a short drive to the north. Wintertime skiing and snowboarding, shopping and exploring, is a short ride over the mountain (Route 17 & ApGap) in Waitsfield, Warren, and Waterbury. Cultural and social events exist throughout the Champlain Valley, including world-class restaurants (Mary's at Baldwin Creek, Tourterelle, Black Sheep Bistro, Bearded Frog...), concerts, opera, the world-famous Shelburne Museum, and many fine establishments for creative and unique shopping events. Vermont is widely known for wonderfully creative breweries, and many of the best are located here in Addison County and nearby: Drop-In Brewing, Otter Creek Brewing, Lawson's Finest Liquids, Alchemist Brewing, The Shed Brewery, Magic Hat Brewing Co., Fiddlehead Brewing, Switchback Brewing, Vermont Pub and Brewery, and many more. Lincoln Peak Winery, Shacksbury Cider, and the home of Woodchuck Hard Cider are nearby in New Haven, Vergennes, and Middlebury.

Great Family Getaway!
We had a great family getaway weekend in Starksboro, Vermont. We enjoyed 2 days of downhill skiing at Sugarbush. When a snow storm on Friday prevented us from getting through the pass to Sugarbush, we enjoyed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on the property and surrounding trails. We even made it to the Alchemist Brewery and the Ben & Jerry's factory for tours and sampling. The house accommodated the 8 of us very comfortably and was very well equipped.
Fantastic Place to Stay!
We needed a space for overflow folks during a film shoot. The rental was peaceful and comfortable. One of the guests said the bed was more comfortable than theirs at home!
Loved staying at Bill's house
We had a great time staying at Bill's house in Starksboro. The house features gorgeous views of the beautiful fall foliage everywhere you look. The location was close by local hiking trails (we checked out Camel's Hump which was great) and also only ~30 minutes into Burlington. Highly recommended!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay this summer! The property offers gorgeous views, huge yard, a wonderfully equipped kitchen, very comfortable beds, and a lovely setting. This was a perfect family spot, with 4 adults and 2 kids in our party. We especially appreciated the beds with kid rails and gate at the top of the stairs for young kids. The owner was very responsive and easy to work with. We would certainly return if our travels take us to Vermont again - a truly terrific area!
accueillant , charmant, magnifique location
Maison bien située, accueillante, grande fenestration et vue sur la montagne
cuisine très bien équipée
nous avons beaucoup apprécié notre séjour
Comfortable Rustic Country Home
My family stayed in this home shortly after Christmas through New Year. This is a wonderful home with a lot of personality and provides most every amenity you could want. The most extraordinary of which was the pull-up bar in an upstairs door frame. The kitchen has a great layout and provides everything the chef could need from knives to tupperware! There are huge windows overlooking fields and mountains. My kids loved playing fussball and darts. The homeowner left many toys, games, topical books (local birds, animals, fauna, geology, children's books, etc.), baseball gloves, etc. which adds to the fun and personality of the home. The location provides a great deal of peace, quiet and country but we drove very easily to Sugarbush, Mad River, Bristol, Middlebury and Burlington. Note that the home is rustic, a bit creaky and noises carry which means people in the home should know each other well. We would definitely stay here again.
Spacious 4-bedroom Post & Beam vacation home on 10+ private acres with spectacular 270-degree views of the high mountains and nearby cliffs. Located on a south-facing open meadow hillside, there is plenty of warm sunshine and privacy with surrounding woods and forest. Close to skiing, snowboarding, and recreational activities at Mad River Glen and Sugarbush, walking and hiking trails, solitude, swimming, exploring, and fishing. At an elevation of 1,500-feet the winter snows beckon X-C skiing and snowshoeing, and sledding for the kids (and big 'kids') outside on the hillsides. A cool mountain stream with wooded banks attracts wildlife including fox, grouse, woodchuck, whitetail deer, black bear, moose, coy-dogs, and birds. The lush verdant meadow and quiet woods of Spring and Summer are perfect for outdoor walks, relaxing, hiking, and exploring the natural areas and villages of Lincoln, Starksboro, Bristol, Middlebury, Fayston and Waitsfield. Bright fall foliage colors of reds, oranges, and yellows, are unsurpassed, with the nearby hiking trails offering colorful distant views from the many open peaks and lookout vantages.
Nearby villages of Bristol and Middlebury offer shopping and a myriad of restaurants to enjoy. The Jerusalem Corners Country Store is 2 minutes away for maple syrup, groceries, fuel, snacks, beer & wine, and more!
