About the property

A True Log Cabin Nestled In The Forest

Restful. Relaxing. Romantic.

Dreaming of slipping away to an enchanting log cabin in the middle of a beautiful forest? The owners designed and built the cabin from cedar logs milled on the property. It could be a movie set! Have you ever watched Bonanza? It was filmed on the Ponderosa in Northern California. This is Palomar Mountain's 'Ponderosa' where Little Joe, and all the rest would feel right at home putting their feet up at this charming log cabin.

Extremely private, you access the property through a locked gate and travel a paved road a mile and a half to the cabin. If you are looking for privacy, you have found it!

Step into the old west! The great room is open to the kitchen with a welcoming wood stove that you really appreciate when the snow is falling. There is a big dining table to gather 'round for meals or for old-fashioned fun when you get those games out. The younger set might enjoy sitting at the counter that is a slab of cedar from the property.

The kitchen is fully stocked for you with everything you should need for cooking and serving your meals. Stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, crock pot, beautiful new set of cookware, all you need to cook and serve your meals. Step out on the patio and a new propane barbecue is waiting.

The walk-in level has the large master bedroom with a very comfortable queen bed also a full bath with a tub and shower. Upstairs is a game and sleeping room with another queen bed, two twins, and a sofa. A 42 inch TV DVD player, high speed internet and a telephone. Since this is such a remote location most cell phones don't work so you're all set just in case you need to dial out or check your messages.

Lots of room to roam in the wide open spaces. Look out to the next ridge and you can see the world famous observatory, and High Point Fire Lookout. Originally built in the 1930's it was recently restored and now back in operation.

A wonderfully inviting tree swing is waiting for kids of all ages, and a very creative picnic table also made with cedar from the land. Horse shoes are fun to be played by all.

It is a star-gazers dream with our dark sky making the stars seem so much closer here on the mountain top.

The Ponderosa is a nature-lovers paradise with deer, wild turkeys and lots of wildlife and wide variety of birds that also call this twenty acres 'home'. Are you a photographer? You will love it here.

We have several field trips to local farms to see horses, sheep, goats, chickens, spinning and weaving, coffee roasting and carving and much more! The owners/story tellers make it a delightful 'step back in time'.

Our first guests over Thanksgiving left notes before we opened this website:

“Thank you so much for opening your wonderful cabin for us. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here in the cozy cabin on your beautiful property. You really created something amazing, and we marvel at the craftsmanship that went into this cabin! Just a gorgeous, peaceful place! We hope to be back some day! All the best to you, Birte and Jim and Kids”

We had such a great time in the Mountains. Thank you for taking the time and sharing all the information. We visited Cecelia's farm. Such nice people and great experience. Kids had so much fun there. Getting warm, fresh eggs right from the chicken's nest was the best experience for Adam. Thank you, Katerina, Robert, Adam and Lucas

We're looking forward to doing our very best to make your time at the Ponderosa a wonderful holiday as a treasured memory forever!

About Wilma Roberts

The owners visited Palomar Mountain on one of their first dates. They fell in love with the mountain, and each other, and discovered the land shortly before they had their two children. Designing and building the lodge was their first project. Looking out the living room off the deck, they have seen on some occasions the Palomar Observatory opening it's window to the stars.

Why Wilma Roberts chose San Diego County

The Ponderosa with the Lodge and now two cabins, is such a wonderful way to share family time with their now-grown children and grand kids. The have many happy memories sharing the forest, it's animals and the beauty of the Four Seasons with family and friends. They cherish the many weekends away from the hectic life of the city work, telephone and television.

What makes this cabin unique

Right now only the log cabin is available. Soon the owners will have the Ponderosa 'School House' Cabin ready for guests too. Please stay tuned. Thank you for your interest in the peaceful, privacy of the Ponderosa!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Our families had a blast! The toys were perfect for Blake and he really enjoyed the drum. The swing was a fun little bonus!

Above and beyond

The cabin is much more than I expected and the surrounding area and grounds are very nice, We were pleasantly surprised by the wildlife sightings. There are birds and deer to see if you get lucky as we did. The kids had a grand time this weekend. Great memories were made. Thanks for the hospitality and recommendations Wilma and Brendan.

"Heavenly" cabin

  • 5 of 5

We slept during the day (fans kept it nice and cool) and star gazed all night (persead meteors--patio faces NE perfect quadrant). Quiet private awesome. For those whose partners are TV fans and who usually have to surrender the living room know that the TV is in a big loft upstairs. I had no idea what a difference that makes

Great property!

  • 4 of 5

The Ponderosa is a fabulous property. We stayed 3 nights with our 4 young children (ages 9, 6, 6, and 6). The children enjoyed climbing the boulders, exploring, and swinging on the rope swing. The cabin is very private and the area is a quiet respite from our busy life. Star gazing is amazing here! When we arrived at the cabin, we did not have any running water and this was corrected right away (turned out to be an air pocket in the line). Highly recommend this property to anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. Our children now 27 and 29 spent most weekends there often with friends from toddler age on. It is a great place for kids to explore. One of our neighbors mini farm with sheep and chickens is a fun place to visit where they can see how wool is spun. Each of the 4 seasons are worth a visit.

Peaceful & Rejuvinating

  • 5 of 5

An outstanding place to get away from the hustle/bustle of the city life and crowds of people. The owner's took great thought and effort in finding the exact location to build their "Ponderosa" log cabin. It's obvious how much they love their property in how they used the resources of their land to incorporate into the cabin's design. It brings the outdoors...inside. This was an added feature when it rained during our stay.

The great thing after a rain is being able to see deer graze outside the sliding door and birds washing/drinking from the bird bath outside the box window. At night the rain cleared the sky to show amazing stars with unexpected clarity.

The owner's also went the extra mile in providing a binder with optional things to do and detailed instructions on how to operate the fire stove along with what's expected when ending your stay. The log cabin was clean, well maintained with plenty of fire wood.

A wonderful place to stay and create incredible memories. We look forward to visiting again!!!

Private and beautiful

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was very private and cozy. We enjoyed our stay - wonderful chance to see all the beautiful fall colors so many leafs fallen on the ground our dog love frolicking in them the weather was great. We did a little sight seeing but mostly stayed around the cabin and surrounding areas. The discription of cabin was very accurate and had everything that we needed for a great stay. The owners were always there to answer questions and make sure things were good for us. I would recommend this to friends and family looking for a good time in local mountains.

My family and I stayed here because a friend was getting married at the Palomar Mountain Resort. We could not have asked for a better place! It was just as nice as the pictures online made it out to be. The owners provided us with everything we could have needed. Their binder within the cabin had fun things to do listed. We all felt very at peace here. It was nice and quite and tons of little woodland creatures for our son to see. I would highly recommend this cabin to anyone looking to stay in the area.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We are happy you enjoyed our log cabin in the woods. A lot of bookings here have been because of weddings in the area. We have another cabin that sleeps 4 on the same property for extended family. Hope to see you again some time soon!
