About the property

5 BR, 5.5 Bath, Large. Four BR's are on the 2nd floor . One BR/bath lower level

This house has been operated by the owner as a Bed and Breakfast for the past ten years. Because of that, the home is particularly geared to serving our guests. The same owner has decided to turn the home into a vacation rental and host one family at a time. The home was actually built in 2004, so it is fairly new construction which means it has all the modern conveniences of 2017. BUT - the decor is purely traditional. It is a large property with five separate bedrooms with their own private bathroom. The kitchen is gourmet and has an 8' x 5' island perfect for family gatherings and cooking together. Eclectic decor and everything is here for your family to enjoy. Stained glass, 10' ceilings, 2 back porches, large courtyard, charming back garden and roof deck - all make this home one of the grandest on Capitol Hill. We no longer offer this property as an event space. Owner will be on the property during the Inauguration to assist guests. If you do plan to invite friends or relatives to visit during your stay, please tell us .

About The Owner

Owners have lived in the home until now and have made sure that it is a gracious place for entertaining. Mark and Diane designed the home and spent years gathering the perfect pieces to make the home special.

The Owner purchased this house in 2002

Why The Owner chose District of Columbia (Washington DC)

Property is 4 blocks walking distance to the Capitol building. After you've spent weeks trying to arrange everyone's schedules and finding a city that agrees with the entire group, you deserve a special place. This is a grand home that will make your stay in Washington, DC memorable.

It is truly special and was featured on the 2013 Capitol Hill Home and Garden show. Each bedroom has a walkout porch or sitting balcony. The back porches are large enough for several folks to gather. There is also a large porch off the kitchen area. Your family will be able to spread out in several different areas of the property and come together at the huge kitchen island to prepare meals. This home will let you experience what living on Capitol Hill feels like at its best. There are five total bedrooms and each has it's own private full bath. Four bedrooms are located on the 2nd floor. One bedroom is located on the lower level with private full bath. This bedroom is large with a sitting area and can accommodate a blow up mattress or futon if requested.

Super comfortable, beautiful surroundings, well laid out and plenty of space for our three families

The house itself is terrific. The location unbeatable. Having the permit parking was priceless and anytime we needed help or had a question the response was immediate.

Good when we finally got in.

  • 4 of 5

Me and my entire family of 9, ages 1-70 had to wait about 2 hours in the 90 degree plus heat before someone came to give us the door code and let us in. I have an open complaint code of 06696074 and would like to know what VRBO is going to do about this.

Please respond to Jim Stewart.

Once we finally got in, everything was great.

Owner was a pleasure, house was well stocked, location was convenient for sightseeing. Great walking to many sights and stores. We spent great family time relaxing on the comfortable back porch. I only wished we had stayed longer so we could enjoy the many porches and balconies. This is a special house and rare find. We enjoyed meals sitting around the huge kitchen island as well as enjoying restaurants nearby.

Monterey Park

Wonderful Place, esp for big families and groups

  • 5 of 5

Our mini-reunion of college friends was a huge success, much of it due to the beautiful house. We used all 6 bedrooms (6th is extra cost), and everyone liked their rooms, and esp their separate bathrooms. The common area was fantastic as we held a couple of dinner parties for 15-18 people, and everyone had places to sit and eat, and converse with friends. The dining table seats 10 easily, the kitchen table seats six, and front living room area seats 4-6. The kitchen has everything we needed for our parties, including more than enough dishes, utensils, and cups/glasses, as we didn't need to buy any disposable items, except napkins and paper towels. The house is located within walking distance of the Native American Museum (aka American Indian Museum), Supreme Court, and Capitol building, and about 4 blocks from Metro Station, so it is very conveniently located. House has street parking permits for two cars. Parking can be a challenge, but we always found spots within a couple of blocks.

Notes: House requires climbing many steps, both outside to get to house level from sidewalk, and inside house. We encountered a few ants in kitchen and a couple of bedrooms, which was manageable, but we had to stay diligent about what foods we left out. We generated a lot of garbage, and recommend planning to minimize that because garbage cans outside are small. Diane, the owner, and her daughter, Lauren, were easy to work with. If you need quick response to a question, it's better to contact Lauren.

This is a really great place, and I highly recommend it.

Capitol Hill is a residential neighborhood within steps of the Capitol and Supreme Court. The homes were built in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Almost all are row houses with 2-3 stories. Parking is typically on the street. The neighborhood has established trees and parks and there are many restaurants, markets, and nightlife nearby. It is home to many of the nation's congressional and governmental leaders.
