About the property

3 bedroom +, sleeps 7, 3 bathrooms, 2 powder rooms, easy walk to centro, maid

San Miguel is voted the #1 city to visit by Conde Nest, 2013. Casa Refugio is featured in 'Casa San Miguel Inspired Design and Decoration' by Annie Kelly. It is located in the friendly, safe neighbourhood of San Antonio, walking distance to Centro, the park and the Institudo.

This is an architecturally sophisticated home designed to exude a sense of peace. The interiors were designed by Casa Midy, who also provided much of the furnishings. The roof garden and the house was influenced by famed Mexican architect Luis Barragan. The house is like a gallery containing a collection of art from around the world.

The front door opens to a corridor that leads to a large living space with a courtyard beyond. This area features a large skylight over a granite table and leather chairs. The focal point of the living room is the round gas fireplace that is surrounded by two designer couches and two Knoll chairs. The Fostex studio monitor speakers provide an amazing stereo experience for listening to your music! Just plug in your iPod.

The central courtyard and the many skylights are the major sources of light, making the interior bright and inviting. The home is split into two areas connect by a long art filled corridor running the length of the courtyard. A wall of French doors runs along the length where the fountain, pond and millstone are located. Tables and chairs are situated on this terrace for the enjoyment of breakfast, lunch and drinks.

The back of the home opens to a large family area and the dining room. This living space has a satellite TV. Dividing the living/dinning space is an organic circle of rocks that forms the gas fireplace. The dinning room has a designer's mirrored table and seats 8-10.

The fully equipped kitchen, with granite counters and stainless steel appliances, lies behind the dinning room.

The kitchen is supplied with a bounty of dishes, cutlery, and glasses. To the side of the kitchen is the pantry and laundry area. The house is equipped with a dishwasher, and washing and drying machines.

Each of the 3 bedrooms are en-suite and have gas fireplaces. The beds are of high quality and all have imported fine linens. Each bedroom has access to courtyard space, affording them a sense of privacy. All the bedrooms have closet space and are bright and airy.

The en-suite master bedroom is located on the ground floor and has a king size Tempera bed, a change room and walk in closet. One totally glass wall overlooks the water feature giving access to the lower courtyard.

The second en- suite bedroom has it's own private stairwell that enters into a sitting area with a Knoll chaise lounge. This room has a Juliette balcony that overlooks the street. Bonus bedroom: connect off this bedroom through the en-suite or the sitting area is a small bedroom with a single bed perfect for a child or storing luggage.

The third en-suite bedroom is located on the second floor, at the back of the large courtyard. This is a new room and contains a queen bed, a TV and a double closet. Above this bedroom is a viewing platform perfect for watching the sunset, having a drink or reading a book.

The long open roof garden is strongly influenced by Luis Barragan, with its high walls that open to the sky. The home was designed to radiate a sense of calm and tranquility. This outdoor courtyard/garden is divide into two areas joined by a walkway that connects the two bedrooms.

An outdoor kitchen/BBQ and outdoor dinning area are located on the roof garden which has potted lemon, line and orange trees and lavender plants.

Casa Refugio is equipped with a stereo system, two satellite TVs, a VCR, water filtration system throughout, security camera outside, a Vonage phone for free calls to call to Canada and the USA, a second local phone, and wifi in the front area of the house.

A housekeeper is provided five and a half days a weeks. She will take care of your laundry and if you provide her with money for provisions she will gladly prepare your

breakfast.

Casa Refugio is an excellent home for a family or a couple that wants to live in a modern home and explore the joys of living in and discovering a Colonial town in Mexico. It is also perfect for three couples allowing each couple to have privacy while still living together.

About Sharie Kennedy Williams

We came to San Miguel for a vacation of one week By the end of the week we had bought Casa Refugio! We fell in love with both our home and the town of San Miguel de Allende. It is the best life decision we have ever made.

Larry is a photographer and I am an art director, so the beauty of this town was a big draw, but what came as pure joy to us was the graciousness of the local people and the abundance of things to do, explore and participate in.

San Miguel was declared a Unisco Heritage site and thus is a well preserved Colonial Spanish town. It has become a gathering spot for anyone interested in the arts in all forms: music, painting, jewellery design, pottery, plays, dance etc.

Rather your interest is in creating, education or laying back with a great read, this town is perfect.

People come to San Miguel to live because the choose to, even though they have many other options available to them.

We are music lovers and there are world class musician performing here in intimate settings.

Sharie Kennedy Williams purchased this house in 2011

Why Sharie Kennedy Williams chose San Miguel de Allende

As soon as we walked through the door of Casa Refugio we felt we were home. After exploring the wonderfully coloured San Miguel there is simply a sense of calm that happens when you enter Casa Refugio. For us, this is the perfect home.

We are located in Colonial San Antonio , and we really love our neighbourhood. The walk into the Centro area of town is only 15 to 20 minutes, and although we are still on a bus and taxi route, we still prefer walking.

What makes this house unique

Casa Refugio is a well designed and thought out home. It is perfect for entertaining as well as enjoying it as just a couple . The name Refugio , which means refuge really is appropriate, as this home becomes a refuge from the very busy lives that we all live. We can relax here, or fill it will family and friends and be equally comfortable.

This is not the house for you if you are looking for the Spanish Colonial experience. It is the perfect home if you are looking for a Mexican modern home that celebrates the joys of visiting or living in Mexico.

Fantastic stay at Casa Refugio - once again!

  • 5 of 5

Just back from another amazing trip to San Miguel de'Allende! My husband, teenage daughter and I absolutely loved our first visit two years ago and were really excited to return to SMA. Especially that we were able to stay at Casa Refugio once again…. this house is unbelievable! It's like living in an art gallery - beautiful art throughout! Just lovely to hang in. There are 2 living rooms, an amazing courtyard (starting your day with breakfast outside is heaven!) roof top terraces and each bedroom has it's own full en-suite bathroom & gas fireplace! The kitchen has been totally redone since our last stay… and like everything in the house - it's state-of-the-art! The setup was really great - although we were just 3 - it would be very easy for several couples or a larger family to stay & enjoy their own privacy under one (skylit) roof. My teenager loved having her own bedroom, hangout area with terrace, not to mention … wifi of course! We were happy to see Matilda again - the housekeeper - she is a sweetie (so discrete) who was there in the morning to make breakfast and get all tidy. The hosts have a hand written note book that includes loads of tips and info on local restaurants and things to do - with business cards, contact names and numbers. Everything to make you feel welcome & get into the grove of the city quickly. There are some fabulous bakeries, a beautiful natural food market, and quaint restaurants that have opened up recently, all a 5 minute walk away! … and OMG the fresh orange juice we got every morning at the corner was to die for! The center of town is a 15 min walk - or an 3$ cab ride! The house made the trip for us - we love this funky town but staying at Casa Refugio was the best!

Deuxième visite à Casa refugio

  • 5 of 5

Spectacular in every way

  • 5 of 5

We are two couples who stayed at Refugio 42 earlier this month. We knew the moment we arrived that we were in a home that not only bespoke beauty, style and art, but that exuded a warmth only someone's home could provide. Fact is, our enjoyment of this magnificent "refuge" began long before we arrived. Sharie is so warm and helpful that all her correspondence before (and then during) our stay was aimed solely at our comfort. She succeeded by a long way.

Not only does the house provide amazing amenities, it provided us a warmth from the start. By the end of our first day, it was "home."

Not only did Sharie go out of her way to provide useful information about places to go, things to do and restaurants (terrific) to dine, she emailed us repeatedly with suggestions and "don't miss" so many things during our stay.

Two recommendations she made were exquisite for us. First was Daniel (transportarte) who provided us round trip comfort to and from the airport, so much so that we asked him to guide us on a full day tour to surrounding towns and places of interest. Second is Mathilda, a tiny woman with a huge smile and a willingness to do everything possible to make our stay enjoyable.

SMA is fabulous as a vacation that's a little different from what many might think of as Mexico. We enjoyed ourselves there and our stay at Refugio 42 made the vacation complete and one to remember. Very highly recommended.

And a fine time was had by all!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful art-filled home with several outdoor areas for reading, sunbathing or having a drink. More house than you will ever need. Can sleep 6 in comfort. Fully equipped kitchen. Two living rooms and dining room. Wonderful music set up. Free wifi and phone to the states. The house is incredible but so are the owners. They have a book of recommendations all of which were terrific. They also regularly sent us suggestions of things to do. Mathilda who works there 6 days a week is incredibly sweet and makes great breakfasts. She also will do your laundry. I can't say enough good things about this house and it's owners.
