Nestled in a quiet neighborhood overlooking Becker Lake Wildlife Area and encircled by wildflower gardens, the guesthouse is an ideal getaway for bird-watchers, hunters, fishermen, hikers, skiiers and families seeking a peaceful retreat in the White Mountains of Arizona.
Once the outbuildings of an old ranch, the rock building was converted to living quarters and occupied by the present owners before it was turned into a guesthouse. Built of local volcanic rock in the 1940s, it has served as a feed granary, tack room, bunkhouse for migrant workers, storage facility and truck shop. Legend has it that Aldo Leopold and John Wayne walked these grounds as guests of previous ranch owners. Their horses would have been corralled here while they visited.
The 600-square foot Blazing Colt Inn has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, living/dining areas and laundry facilities. It comfortably accommodates 4-5 guests. An adjoining, 400-square foot bunkroom is available for an additional $50 per night. With 1 queen and 2 twin beds, it can accommodate 4 additional guests, with an open air option available in summer months. It offers an ideal 'camping' experience for kids.
We would surely recommend this place, its even more beautiful than the Pics you see.
We were 6 in group the place is big, very peaceful, nice kitchen, Karen has taken care of everything in the house.. she was very supportive of all Questions we had for her.. the day we went, we had snowfall the next evening so we were able to do Born fire as well as we experienced the Snow fall.. the House has everything you need. Just relax and enjoy...
We will be going to this place for sure again.. Thanks Karen for being so great.. Best regards, Kingshuk
We discovered this little gem while searching furiously for an alternative to where we usually stay, which just became too demanding. We were SO PLEASED at what we found when we got there!! The pictures really do it justice, but there are not enough of them, so my wife shot over 100 pictures of the place and the surroundings. Why? So we can look at them while we wait to go up there again! For the listed 600 square feet, you would not BELIEVE what is done with the space! It feels like a home, not a guest house. Karen has done an amazing job with it and you will spend at LEAST half a day just admiring her work!! Both bathrooms, although one is a little small, are so well decorated and stocked. There is absolutely NOTHING CHEESY about this place at all! And well-stocked is an understatement! Karen provides just about everything you can think of! Such fantastic taste and effort!! There are decorating ideas each square inch of floors, walls, and ceilings!
Karen is a fantastic host and about as friendly as you will ever meet in this rental genre. She's such a pleasure to talk to, and her companion Scarlet is so well behaved and lovable!!! CAUTION! Don't fall for Scarlet's charms and throw a stick, or a stray pine cone she drops at your feet. You will be roped in for hours! =D
There is no TV or cable, which was fine for us, we brought our own. Internet is tough to use because of the signal strength but I hope to help Karen with that our next stay there. If you are technically (network) inclined, you can fix that easily with a small mobile network kit. A simple TP-LINK repeater will do it. Just remember that the wireless AP she uses is set for WPA and not WPA2. I used a TP-LINK WR841N v9.2 with DD-WRT firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (12/22/14) std set for subnet 10. I then ran a cat 5e cable from that to my 8 port switch and then to my Windows 10 laptop. A few command line entries later, I had the laptop's wireless hotspot up and shared with its wired connection, and we had internet throughout the place and full strength. A speedtest.net survey returned 6mbps down and .5mbps up. It was more than enough to watch a few netflix supernatural episodes. The WR841N should be placed in the guest bedroom window to offer maximum line-of-site to her access point.
I can't remember the last time we were so pleased with a place we rented, or its host. We are staying up there again and again!!
I could write all day but I'll save that for my next entry. THANK YOU KAREN AND SCARLET!
Karen & Scarlet (her pooch) were great hosts. A short walk to Becker Lake or the Little Colorado river gives you lots of options for fun. The surrounding high country is stunningly beautiful. The cabin is beautifully decorated with plenty of amenities. We loved our stay a will definitely be back!
My friends and I (7 total) stayed at the Blazing Colt for a weekend ski trip to Sunrise. Not only was the location great, (nice ~30 min scenic to resort) but the guesthouse was amazing! Karen was so welcoming and accommodating, even with our late evening arrival and we had everything we needed at the property. Very clean, lovely space with so much space and activities to do inside and outside. She and her husband have a great eye for details to make sure travelers are comfortable and taken care of! Scarlett the pup was super friendly as well (we all miss her!) I cannot thank Karen enough for such a lovely weekend I appreciate you going above and beyond for us! I would recommend to all friends, family and future travelers to stay here!
Three of my girlfriends and I stayed at this little amazing, renovated house while we took a trip to the lavender farm in Concho. We had great time! Everything was full of artistic decor and the neighborhood was very friendly. The location is really beautiful! We took a walk by the river nearby. The town is so quaint. Us girls had a great time shopping nearby antique shops, western store, and enjoyed the restaurants that provided great comfort food. The hostess was amazing! She was always able to communicate our needs with such a great personality. I recommend this location~
My family and I had the opportunity to spend a week at the Blazing Colt Inn in June of 2015. My son married a local girl and we were there for their amazing wedding! Karen was an amazing hostess and the Inn was perfect! If you are going to be in the Springerville area and are looking for a great retreat...I highly recommend checking out the Blazing Colt Inn! You won't be disappointed! -Marla Bailey Schooley, Mason, Texas
Nestled in a quiet neighborhood overlooking Becker Lake Wildlife Area and encircled by charming gardens, Blazing Colt Inn is an ideal getaway for bird-watchers, hunters, fishermen, hikers and others seeking a peaceful retreat in the White Mountains of Arizona.
Half a mile away, Becker Lake Wildlife Area's Lakeview Trail is a one mile loop following the western edge of Becker Lake to an observation platform overlooking the southern marshy end of the lake. Here waterfowl and shorebirds can easily be seen and occasionally a herd of deer or antelope. The River Walk Trail meanders along the Little Colorado River for a half-mile. Mule deer can often be spotted grazing nearby.
For birdwatchers, Blazing Colt Inn is located within the Upper Little Colorado River Watershed IBA which encompases approximately 27 miles of the Little Colorado River from its headwaters on Mount Baldy flowing northeast to the Wenima Wildlife Area. The 7,079-acre Mount Baldy Wilderness Area lies within the Springerville Ranger District of the Apache National Forest. With elevations varying from 9,000 to 11,400 feet, it includes habitat for Mexican Spotted Owl and Northern Goshawk. The 355-acre Wenima Wildlife Area is a river riparian habitat that stretches over two miles along the Little Colorado River. Two hiking trails provide easy access to both streamside and upland areas. Numerous waterfowl, birds, and raptors can be seen, including Golden Eagle, American Kestrel, Belted Kingfisher, Blue Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting, and a variety of migrating warblers and songbirds. Both Mountain and Western Bluebirds are found in the junipers in winter. Wintering Bald Eagles are present in substantial numbers on all the area lakes. (http://aziba.org/?page_id=648)
The Casa Malpais Archaeological Park, located near downtown Springerville, is the premiere archaeological site in the White Mountains of Arizona. This unique site is known as a 'fissure pueblo' because ancient peoples built within fissures in the extensive basalt lava flow. It also features an astronomical calendar, great kiva, ancient stairways, and rock art from the Mogollon culture. Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964, guided tours to the site are available from March through November. The 3/4-mile hike rises 150 feet in elevation along steep, rocky terrain. The Casa Malpais Museum, located in the Springerville Heritage Center is open year-round. (http://www.casamalpais.org/)
In addition to the Casa Malpais Museum, the Springerville Heritage Center includes a Visitor Center and art gallery displaying the works of many talented local artists. It also houses the Renée Cushman Museum, consisting of a donated art collection which “includes a Rembrandt engraving, pen-and-inks by Tiepolo, and an impressive collection of European antiques, some dating back to the 15th century” (Fodor’s). Exhibits of area history and pioneer families offer visitors a glimpse into the area's past.
The White Mountains of Arizona are an angler's paradise and several state fishing records have been set in the area's pristine freshwater lakes and streams. Trout are the most prevalent species, with rainbow, brown and brook trout the most abundant. The White Mountain Apache trout is found on the West Fork of the Black River, one of the few areas in Arizona and the only place in the world where these trout exist. Talented (and lucky) anglers may also find themselves hooking some large- and small-mouth bass, catfish or even sunfish. From novice to experienced, all anglers in the White Mountains enjoy dramatic pine and fir forests, dotted with dramatic aspens. The scenery is the perfect backdrop for any fishing, whether you are reeling them in or not. The landscape may be the reason that, throughout the year, fishing never stops. Late spring, summer and fall angling is popular across the region. Winter ice fishing is also available depending on weather conditions. Quail, rabbit and waterfowl are also found in this area. Big game hunting is permitted by the AZGFD through a lottery system. (http://www.azgfd.gov/eservices/draw.shtml)
Sunrise Park Resort is one of two ski resorts in northern Arizona and is located approximately 30 miles southwest of Blazing Colt Inn. During the summer, the resort offers scenic lift rides, hiking, biking and horsebackriding.
