About the property

Beautiful Lakefront Retreat With One Of Lake Sinclair's Best Views!

Famous Author's Lakefront Getaway! With one of Lake Sinclair's best views, the historic Wildwood Flower Retreat is perfect for couples, families, and that special girl's or guy's weekend away. The Retreat is completely furnished and decorated in a sportsman's theme of wildlife prints, southern college football, golf and fishing motifs. Sit in the hot tub, while watching the waves hit the lake wall. Or enjoy the fire pit and flat screen TV on the dock!

Home of famed author of 'Go West Young Man and Don't Come Back,' the Wildwood Flower is one of the first homes on Lake Sinclair.

The Wildwood Flower was built in 1955 by the former 'boss hog'-type mayor of Milledgeville, Walter B. Williams Jr. who 'ruled' Milledgeville, GA from the 50's through the 70's. This home served as the back-drop for many of Walter's political meetings and lavish lakefront parties - complete with live bands that won many 'votes' for the mayor! The house has only had two owners ... The Williams Family and the current owner, Gary Spillers who has owned the property for the last 14 years.

The Wildwood Flower's pavilion is big enough for a variety of waterfront activities and entertainment. Private fishing areas are also available to guests.

The beautiful morning sunrise, the gorgeous panoramic lake views and a campground-feel make this renovated sports retreat irresistible!

Unique home, best views, great amenities!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed the week of the 4th of July. I have asked to reserve again for next year. I also believe the home would make an excellent winter/ fall lake retreat.

There are many houses on the lake to rent that are newer and more modern with upgraded finishes...just like the home I live in daily. But this home offers a unique lake experience that reminds me of my childhood. I doubt there is another home on the lake similar. After 4 days, I was still finding interesting decor, quirky wall hangings and interesting things to read. My wife, 3 boys (21,19, 13) along with friends all felt it was our favorite lake rental. We wake surfed, wake boarded, pulled tubes, swam, paddle boarded, fished, grilled, had a crab boil, went out to eat once, hit golf balls into the lake, watched late night TV on the dock, saw sunrises from the hammock, saw sunsets from the hot tub, played cards & games into the night at the huge table and still wanted more days before coming home.

The house was very clean and the bathrooms were very adequate. The dock is older but held and protected my two boats well tied properly. Plenty of parking room for guests. Like any old property, there are more items in need up updating and repair than with a new property. Everyone is different, but I found the far more upside in the unique experience than I would have in pristine finishes.

The owner, Gary and his Property Manager, Julian were easily accessible and super eager to satisfy.

I highly recommend the home for you family...just not next 4th of July!

Beautiful view, immaculately kept home

  • 4 of 5

The home was spotless. Exceptional view of the lake. Easy access by boat and drive. 4 stars instead of 5 because: Wifi did not work and that was one of the reasons I chose this place as my daughter had homework and was unable to do it without the wifi. Beds/linens were clean but not the most comfortable; however, we were there to be on the lake and not sleep. The toilet in the half bath did not work properly, but the manager indicated that it was to be repaired.

Beautiful spot on the water

  • 4 of 5

We stayed Tuesday thru Sunday at this property. The place is at the end of a road and very quite area. There was plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the location. The owner Gary was most helpful in planning and quickly answered all my crazy questions. Rooms are comfortable and the owner has tried to respect the original time period of the cabin. My husband and daughter love to fish and where able to catch some really nice catfish. There is a new Kroger not 5 minutes from the location in Milledgeville. Had a really great time of relaxing and enjoying the water.

Beautiful view and amenities!

  • 5 of 5

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay here at The Spillers home away from home! The cement dock was awesome to grill and relax, even eating pizza the first night from Marcos. The house has a lot of character and the views are spectacular! And the hot tub, from a long day fishing and shopping we all enjoyed the hot tub to relax and off to bed! Definitely a must to come back and relax! From the personalization of the owner and his laid back personality to the care taker checking on us we are very pleased with our stay! We will return again!

About Gary Spillers

Gary currently splits his time between Atlanta and Milledgeville in pursuit of commercial/investment real estate opportunities. In his spare time, he enjoys writing 'mostly true' tales about himself and his interesting array of suspect friends and the 'messes' they used to get into as told about in 'Go West Young Man, But Don't Come Back!' by Gary Spillers (2011), available on Amazon. A native of Milledgeville, Gary starred in all sports while attending Baldwin High School and took his love of football to Troy University, where he became an All-Conference linebacker and was voted team captain his senior year. After graduating with a degree in marketing and business administration in 1970, Gary launched what became a 34-year real estate career.
