About the property

Beautiful Lakefront Retreat With One Of Lake Sinclair's Best Views!

Famous Author's Lakefront Getaway! With one of Lake Sinclair's best views, the historic Wildwood Flower Retreat is perfect for couples, families, and that special girl's or guy's weekend away. The Retreat is completely furnished and decorated in a sportsman's theme of wildlife prints, southern college football, golf and fishing motifs. Sit in the hot tub, while watching the waves hit the lake wall. Or enjoy the fire pit and flat screen TV on the dock!

Home of famed author of 'Go West Young Man and Don't Come Back,' the Wildwood Flower is one of the first homes on Lake Sinclair.

The Wildwood Flower was built in 1955 by the former 'boss hog'-type mayor of Milledgeville, Walter B. Williams Jr. who 'ruled' Milledgeville, GA from the 50's through the 70's. This home served as the back-drop for many of Walter's political meetings and lavish lakefront parties - complete with live bands that won many 'votes' for the mayor! The house has only had two owners ... The Williams Family and the current owner, Gary Spillers who has owned the property for the last 14 years.

The Wildwood Flower's pavilion is big enough for a variety of waterfront activities and entertainment. Private fishing areas are also available to guests.

The beautiful morning sunrise, the gorgeous panoramic lake views and a campground-feel make this renovated sports retreat irresistible!

About Gary Spillers

Gary currently splits his time between Atlanta and Milledgeville in pursuit of commercial/investment real estate opportunities. In his spare time, he enjoys writing 'mostly true' tales about himself and his interesting array of suspect friends and the 'messes' they used to get into as told about in 'Go West Young Man, But Don't Come Back!' by Gary Spillers (2011), available on Amazon. A native of Milledgeville, Gary starred in all sports while attending Baldwin High School and took his love of football to Troy University, where he became an All-Conference linebacker and was voted team captain his senior year. After graduating with a degree in marketing and business administration in 1970, Gary launched what became a 34-year real estate career.

Gary Spillers purchased this house in 1999

Pretty much a traditional Lake house get away.

  • 3 of 5

Location was great and convenient for our short weekend. The outdoor/dock area tv was nice was a nice treat as the weather for our stay was perfect to spend the day outdoors. With our group being avid golfers we really enjoyed the floating green/target platform. We brought a 5 gallon bucket of balls and between the 4 of us there was not many left come Sunday morning. The master bedroom bedding and mattress were nice and comfortable. The guest rooms bedding and mattresses could certainly be updated. The mattresses simply put are not comfortable and the comforters are the same. Outside of the guest room bed/bedding matter this home is exactly what we expected. Older, rough around the edges but first class location and views. The home is comfy and very functional. My group would certainly rent this property again.

Respectfully,

Ken Whisman

Excellent Rental

  • 5 of 5

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The Wildwood Flower is my favorite place to stay while fishing and hanging out at Lake Sinclair. I'm always pleasantly surprised when I return to see the extra amenities that Mr. Spillers has added since my last visit.

Great Location on the lake.

  • 4 of 5

Our first impression of the house and the property was great. The location is super convenient to stores and town and their spot on the lake is wonderful. The wooden dock (recommended swimming area by the owner) is in need of repair as there were nails sticking up and the night after we got there, one side of the dock broke loose, making it dangerous. The hot tub is a nice addition but needed water and maintenance. The cement dock is a great fishing spot.

The inside of the home was wonderful and quaint. They accommodate the house with everything one would need for their stay (linens, cookware, etc). The rooms were kept neat and the WIFI is a great addition.

Wildwood Flower: Nice place for rest, relaxation, and outdoor activities

  • 5 of 5

We had wonderful family time during our 5 night, 4 day stay with both outdoor and indoor activities. Yes, I recommend it to others! Comfy beds, dining area, living room area, outdoor shady areas, and swimming area. The views were terrific and we watched two rainstorms pass through from the safety of the living room and dining room windows. There was even a rainbow with both ends visible after one of them!

The beds were comfortable, pillows were abundent. The house and grounds were clean and well maintained. With all the swimming happening and children and adults thoroughly enjoying themselves, we went through towels quickly, so washed towels a couple of times, The kitchen was large enough for several people to work on separate preparations simultaneously during extended family gatherings. I was glad that I brought my own sharp knives for food preparation. I also brought zip-lock type bags, foil, plastic wrap, paper towels. The house had paper towels, toilet tissue, basic spices, good pans, tableware (except we went through spoons pretty fast and mostly used plastic utensils we bought.)

We all really appreciate Gary Spillers' allowing us to have day visitors. He asked that we rent portable toilets if we were having more than 15 people on site, and helped me get that set up at a very reasonable price. Gary was there to explain where things are shortly after we arrived. His secretary was available via telephone in case we had issues during the stay.

The separate fishing and swimming/boat docks worked well. As promised, fishing was good and catfish were on the menu Sunday evening.

Do bring a small first aid kit for the occasional scratches and scrapes that children tend to get.

This is an older home, so there were a few excentricities. However, we really enjoyed being there:

- Bathtub/shower combinations have no plugs, so if you want a bath, bring a rubber stopper. Showers worked well.

- Kitchen faucet is a little tricky - get cold water by moving the handle to the 1:00 o'clock position. Otherwise, water is hot!

- Dishwasher door and oven door argue over which gets to be opened, so just be sure that the one you don't want to open is completely closed.

- 1955 ceiling fan in living room works very well, most of the time. If blades do not start turning when it is switched on, have a tall person reach up and give the blades a slight nudge. That was all it took on the two occasions it just hummed.
