The cozy 1 bedroom apartment (ohana), Hawaii , situated below a family home in a garden setting with two separate entrances. The kitchen, located in a corner of the living room has a full refrigerator, range/oven, and microwave. A table and chairs are on the lanai and there is a fold out dining table for inside dining. The screened doors and windows offer gentle breezes and allow the bird songs to wake you each morning. An air conditioner has been added for guest comfort during warm weather. Kealakekua Bay is a 2 minute walk away and Manini Beach is a five minute walk and a wonderful place to spend an hour or a day in the beautiful small park with a sandy cove and friendly people, or to snorkel among the many tropical fish that abound in this underwater preserve. Sunsets at Manini Point are spectacular, and the benches provide a nice place to sit and enjoy the view. Spinner dolphins leap from the bay most mornings and Humpback Whales are commonly seen in the bay or out breaching out at sea during February through April. They give birth to their calves is the bay and you can hear the slap of their tails and their vocalizations during the night. This area is a quiet village called Napoopoo and there are no stoplights, stores, or crowds. All shopping and dining are located up the hill 4 miles in Kealakekua, Capt. Cook, or the other local villages of Kealakekua or Kainaliu town.
This home has been in the family since 1979. The Ohana was built for our Uncle has been used by family and friends ever since. I have lived in the Ohana part time for the last 10 years. I live in rural Northern California on our beef ranch and am a retired Hospice Nurse. I spend my time between the Ohana and my mainland home. I enjoy spending 3-4 months a year in the Ohana alone or with friends. I would like others to share this experience.
Marilyn Azevedo purchased this apartment in 1979
The Ohana is decorated with comfortable personal touches that make it feel like a home. This ohana is so very close to Kealakekua Bay that we spend most days while there snorkeling or swimming. The water is warm as are the local people which make special days and a unique true Hawaiian experience. You will love the old time feel of the Bay and quiet days away from the city. Exploring the small towns at the top of the hill give you a look at old Hawaii.
This Ohana is in a perfect location. The comfortable personal touches inside this little home make it easy to relax. The proximity of the Bay make this Ohana special. There is also a cot that is available for a child or extra visitor. The view from the living room window offers a peek-a-boo look at the distant ocean.
The ocean allowed us to experience sunrise and sunset right on each water. Swimming with the dolphins was wonderful.
Kevin was very helpful and ythe unit had everything we needed, we hope to come back soon.
This ohana is a wonderful vacation rental unit, located in an area that is magical. The main road through Napo'opo'o is one-lane, and that will give you an idea about how special the location is. It is remote, and that is a good thing, yet just a forty minute drive from downtown Kailua-Kona.
The first thing you notice upon waking up in the morning, is the beautiful sound of birds. Kealakekua Bay is just a few minutes walk from this unit. The bay is fantastic for swimming, and snorkeling, and Manini Beach is just amazing. It is a small beach, frequented by many people local to the area, as well as visitors from all over the world. It is only about a five minute walk from the ohana.
Pu'uhonua o Honaunau, the National Park, is just a four mile drive south.
Two Step, just outside the park is a great snorkeling spot. There is a great picnic area, with tables among the coconut palms, in the southern part of the park, which is absolutely perfect for evening and sunset picnics.
I have stayed at this ohana many times, typically twice a year. It is reasonably priced, and the location is beautiful and very special. My most recent visit was March 15 to March 25, 2015. It is inevitable that some noise will carry from the main residence above, but it has never been excessive or annoying in my experience. During my recent stay, the long-term tenants in the main residence above were very quiet and considerate. The manager, Marilyn, has always been very nice, approachable and responsive to any concerns. I am very grateful this ohana is available as a vacation rental, and I sincerely hope to stay there over and over again in the future.
Within walking distance to several snorkeling sites. Quiet neighborhood. True Hawaiian experience. Amenities are just right for 2 people. We cooked almost everyday and had no problem. Landlord recommendations were great. We swam with dolphins and plan to come back to see the whales.
It's all about the location at Sweet Ohana. Walking down to the bay in the morning with coffee to watch the sunrise. Swimming to Captain Cook before all the snorkel cruises arrive. Making the easy 8 mile roundtrip drive to Two Step for phenomenal snorkeling. Walking 20 minutes to secluded Ke'ei Beach...and 10 minutes further to a fantastic swimming hole. Taking one last dip at Manini Beach just a short walk away. Watching the sunset from the boat ramp a half block away. Nice walks, swimming, snorkeling and views are all in easy access with little or no driving required.
The rental itself is homey and functional, and while not especially charming, I do like the living area off the kitchen. I almost considered sleeping in there because the couch was so comfortable. The bedroom was fine - and also has a comfy couch - but the normal sounds of people walking around upstairs are much more noticeable in this room. I never went in there until I was ready to collapse for the night anyway.
I want to give a special shout out to the upstairs neighbors - Kevin and Joe - who made me feel so welcome and shared some good tips about the area in addition to giving me mangoes, and a lei and some of their amazing honey.
I should also mention that Marilyn was very quick to respond to my initial request and was flexible about my check-in and check-out times, which I appreciated greatly.
If you are looking for a rental that is totally secluded, then this isn't the place for you. But if you want a nice slice of Hawaii in a beautiful area, then this is the place.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sweet Ohana! The unit is clean, very well stocked, quiet, very comfortable for a couple--perfect for a peaceful get-away. We loved having our breakfast out front, watching the birds cavort! The location couldn't be better--walking distance to snorkeling and kayaking or just hanging out at Manini or Napoopoo Beaches. The local folks were so friendly and enjoyed sharing their piece of paradise with us. Marilyn provided many wonderful ideas for places to see and experience--and places to eat! We loved having Sweet Ohana as our central location for exploring the rest of the island--from South Point and Green Sands Beach to Hilo and the volcano to Hawi and the north coast. The Big Island is now our favorite Hawaiian destination, in large part due to Marilyn's wonderful hospitality! We look forward to returning to Sweet Ohana! Mahalo, Marilyn!
We had a very good time.
Everything we needed was in the house.
The house was very clean and nice.
The bay (Kaelakekua) was a few minutes walk.
Many birds in the garden.
We will come back if we come to Hawai again.
This journey is an adventure to us: We arrived late (around 10pm). My husband didn't want to disturb the neighbor so didn't turn on the high beam headlight. Unfortunately he broke the water pipe in the garden. We called Marilyn immediately and tried to handle this crisis. Marilyn is very nice and responsive. We got help from John (great guy and knowledgeable) who's sent by Marilyn the next morning. John is very efficient and effective. He did a great job. It was a bit detour from our original plan. But we are pleased to knowing all these wonderful people.
The house is lovely, offering plenty of privacy. It's at the end of the road. So no people wandering around except animals. I saw roosters, hens, mongooses, and red birds. It's also very close to the best snorkeling spots -- 10 mins drive from the two-step and 15 mins from the trail head to the Caption Cook Monument. We were able to clean ourselves before heading to town. We enjoyed our stay and wish this never end!
The bay is a site of an Ancient Hawaiian Temple or Heiau and overlooks Captain Cook Monument through the ruins of an ancient Hawaiian Village. Napoopoo is the perfect spot of an early morning stroll. Snorkel, Swim and Picnic at Manini Beach, Stroll to lovely and secluded Ke'ee Beach. Jog or walk South 4 miles on a level road or drive down this road to visit Pu'uhonau O Honaunau, a fully restored ancient site of refuge. Snorkel at Two Steps near Honaunau, a popular snorkel and dive spot. For a visit near the volcano, South Point and Black Sand Beach.
