Two Bdrm Main Casa, 2 Brdm Cabina, 1 Bdrm Jungle Pad, 5 Bdrms, 4 Baths, Slps 10
On the ocean side of the two bedroom main villa a beautiful infinity pool overlooks a butterfly garden, the valley and ocean below. There is a rancho with hammock and jungle and ocean views. Also, a back patio offers a shaded area for afternoon relaxing and bird watching. The self contained cabina offers two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. An outdoor kitchen (cabina) offers amazing ocean views and sits at the edge of the jungle. One hundred and ninety concrete steps lead to a river which drops off into a 200' waterfall. Fresh water shrimp can be caught here -- if you're quick with a net. The steps are through the jungle with passion flowers, buttress trees, and many of Costa Ricas coloured frogs along the way. Both dwellings are A/C equipped although the breeze at this elevation means the A/C is rarely required. This is a new property built in 2012 and beautifully landscaped with flowering shrubs and fruit trees. The Jungle Pad, built in 2014, adds another bedroom with two twin beds and its own bathroom, bringing sleeping capacity for the property to 10. It is truly an amazing property.

About Dorothy and Len MacDonald
We are retired Canadians, residents in the Kawartha Lakes area of Southern Ontario. We have always loved travelling and spending time with our four grown children and ten grandchildren. Recently three great-grandchildren have been added to the family. I have always loved orchids and owning this property allows me to indulge in this passion.
Dorothy and Len MacDonald purchased this Villa in 2012
Why Dorothy and Len MacDonald chose Tres Rios
After visiting many areas of Costa Rica over a period of 12 years we finally found our property in the Cascada Sandalo Estates development near the village of Tres Rios. We built and developed our home and property during 2012 and totally love it. The property boasts a mature mango tree and a spring fed river at the bottom of a ravine in the jungle that can be reached by 196 concrete steps. The river ends in a 200 foot waterfall. A unique property.
What makes this Villa unique
The cooling breezes at the 1300 ft elevation of our home. The many waterfalls and rivers in the area. It is so cool to look down on the mists rising from the rivers in the valley below us. The toucans and aracaris visit - usually twice daily -- and pizotes and monkeys often. Occasionally a sloth. We have also seen macaws, laughing falcons, and hawks from our patio. It is so peaceful!

Puravida at Casa de Orquídeas!
We had a wonderful stay at Casa de Orquideas. It is a paradise! Our gracious hosts, Len and Dorothy ensured that we were comfortable and informed us of the local happenings.
The accommodations are very comfortable with good beds and hot showers....as well as a bidet toilet! We were able to sleep with just the fan, and not the air conditioner, enjoying the mountain breezes. We woke every morning to the sounds of the jungle—howlers in the mountains, birds singing, cicadas buzzing. The toucans greeted us every morning and said goodnight every evening in the trees beside the property.
We used the pool daily and it was wonderful. We enjoyed the fabulous sunsets while sitting in the pool with cocktails.
The kitchen is well equipped and we were able to prepare many meals here on the gas range or on the outdoor barbeque. We ate outside on the deck for meals...no bugs bothered us. The grounds are fabulous with lush vegetation all around attracting a myriad of butterflies and birds (blue morphos, kiskadees, red-winged blackbirds, hummingbirds, soaring swallow-tailed kites & vultures, toucans...to name a few). There are many flowering plants all around the property as well as fruit producing trees. We were treated to fresh bananas daily and some limes. The manzana de aguas, mangos and pineapples were not quite ripe.
My daughter took advantage of the 195 steps down to the waterfall as part of her daily exercise routine. I used the shaded palm thatch palapa for yoga....and also for relaxing in the hammock while enjoying my book. We also walked down to the local waterfall and then down the road to explore the river –rewarded by a view of another waterfall. We took a dip in the cool river water.
The 7 km road to the house was bumpy through the small village of Tres Rios but then was smooth gravel. A 4 X 4 with manual transmission is required in order to traverse the up and down hills of the road. My husband became quite an expert at driving this by the end of the week and we were actually enjoying the ride.
We were able to partake in many of the local activities including ziplining at Osa Canopy, mangrove tour at Sierpe, rainforest tour at Hacienda Baru, beaches at Ballena, Whale’s Tail, Ventanas and Tortuga, surfing at Dominical, and meals in Ojochal at Exotica and Citrus/Umami and locally at El Jardin.
All in all we had an excellent time and are so missing Costa Rica!

Len and I are so pleased that your family enjoyed our home. We feel it is a little chunk of paradise, and then we wonder if we’re just prejudiced! Thank you for the pristine condition you left the house and for your kind review. Len and Dorothy
A group of nine stayed at Dorothy and Len's property and it was nothing short of amazing. While the drive required vehicles with four wheel capabilities, it certainly was breath taking.
We arrived at night and property managers Claude and Francine graciously guided us up the mountain to our destination. The house itself is beautiful but the property is stunning. Waking up to that view every morning was blissful.
Tony and Linda are also very helpful while staying at Dorothy and Len's. Tony took us on a hike and had many recommendations about the area.
Dorothy was always very quick to respond to any questions we had and made the entire experience very easy. She connected us with Karen who made booking excursions a breeze!
We opted to do groceries in Uvita, which isn't too far from the villa. They had plenty of things to choose from and there are several fruit stands along the road if that's something you choose to utilize.
We had a couple of meals at Villa Leonor with Cliff and they were amazing. Their BBQ is a must try!!
The outdoor living space is truly stunning here. We ate all of our meals outside on the giant table. Lots of time spent in the hammock and in the pool. Having laundry onsite came in very useful!
As a group this was our first time not staying all inclusive and I cannot wait to come back!
Thanks again Dorothy and Len!
It was our pleasure to host you and your group to our home, Kaitlin. I'm happy to hear that our community friends/property managers were accommodating and that Karen was able to help with excursions -- she has always been great. We love the Costa Ballena and it's gratifying to hear others express their appreciation of its beauty as well! You are welcome back any time. Dorothy and Len
Spectacular Property with Million $ Views
This property is so beautiful, the pictures don't do it justice! We loved the privacy, the fresh fruit from the trees, the beautiful sounds of the jungle and the pool was just perfect. The home, the grounds and amenities were all so nice, we enjoyed walking the property, hiking down to the waterfall and most of all looking at the beautiful plants/flowers. The orchids growing on the palm trees were so great. My only reason for not giving it five stars is the road to the home is rough, you MUST have a 4 wheel drive vehicle to make it up the mountain. After a few days of driving the road I felt comfortable and it was no big deal.
Dorothy and Len are great to work with, always prompt in answering any questions, their description of the property is spot on and most of all they just very nice people. Their recommendations for restaurants, shopping and sightseeing are spot on, take advantage of their knowledge, we sure did! Our next trip to the area will definitely rent from them and stay in this beautiful home.
It was a pleasure hosting you Bruce and Michelle. It's gratifying to hear others express the same appreciation for our home and surroundings that we feel. We hope you will come back!
The property was beautiful and even nicer than we expected. Clean and well appointed.
We had an incredible experience for our first time in Costa Rica. Loved the property. It was perfect for ourselves and our 4 adult children. We love to cook and the kitchen served us well. Lots of fresh and accessible food choices. Lots of space to spread out and enjoy this beautiful setting. Awesome outdoor eating area. We had to call 'dibs' on turns in the serene hammock area. Got up every morning and had coffee in the bird watching corner. Enjoyed sunsets by the pool. Packed very light so used the washer. Definitely need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Dorothy and Len were incredibly accommodating. We did so much, but need to come back to experience all we didn't have time for as well. Would suggest bring some local currency as some settings had trouble making change for American and the exchange rate varied. Not an issue, but something to consider. Drive from San Jose was on a beautiful highway. Other roads are very twisty and turny and as I said 4 wheel drive is essential.
All in all wouldn't change anything. Lovely people, lovely setting, lovely weather and a million things to do. Thanks for sharing your piece of heaven Dorothy and Len.
Kim, it was a joy to host you and your family. Thank you for leaving the property so clean and towels all washed and folded. So thoughtful. Len and I thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent with you and hope to see you in the future -- in either Costa Rica or Canada.
If you are looking for a great place to stay that offers peace and tranquility, this is the spot.
Dorothy and Len have made this "the" place to go. Pictures don't do the fabulous ocean view justice. The sunsets are spectacular. The main house, where we stayed, is very comfortable and felt like home.
As a previous reviewer has mentioned, it is a good 20 minutes on a dirt road from the highway. The Ojochal restaurants like Citrus and Exotica are about 30 minutes away. We were happy to do our grocery shopping in Palmar Norte (about 40 mins away) and hibernating for a few days.
We would highly recommend Len and Dorothy's home.
Gorgeous Remote Spot With Ocean View!
Gorgeous Remote Spot With Ocean View!
Dorothy and Len are extremely helpful and have an amazing property. If you are looking to get far away from noise and people this is for you! The main house is clean, spacious and has everything you need. Travel with friends or relatives and there are extra beds in the cottages above the main house. Charming outdoor eating areas, a hammock, pool and deck with great sunset views. Birds including toucans all around the property with flowers galore and a variety of fruiting trees, and a nice walk down to the river in the forest.
Within an hour you can reach tours to Corcovado National Park, a huge rainforest; other more frequented national parks like Manuel Antonio, as well as many waterfalls, and a variety of beaches including boat tours to Cano Island. They can connect you with a great person to arrange tours for you.
There are small stores at the main road at the bottom of the mountain and several larger supermarkets within a 30 min drive.
You MUST have a 4WD to reach the house. And it's best to arrive before dark (we did not). Dorothy and Len kindly met us to lead us up, and patiently waited nearly two hours for us to get there. It's a steep climb on a dirt road, with bumps and turns. On average it took us about 20min to get from the main road to the house and similar time to get back down.
We loved the house and the location and would absolutely return
