About the property

Quiet, Soft-surface Environment - Relaxing Garden Atmosphere - Close To OSF

Chakra Garden of Ashland’s charming 2-room Temple cottage offers privacy and spacious comfort in a romantic, temple-like setting.

Expect friendly atmosphere, interior cleanliness, bamboo floors, interesting lighting, filtered drinking water, a moderately equipped kitchenette (toaster oven, micro, electric kettle, mini-fridge/freezer, 4 each dishes, cups, etc.), and a relaxing, soft-surface environment.

Temple House at Chakra Garden was built in 1907 as the carriage building for our vintage residence (c.1884). In 2012 took it from a dirt floor to fully modern interior and it now serves as guest lodging and teaching office. You’ll live in a space that embodies body/mind/spirit wholeness. You’ll open your front door into our graciously sprawling gardens, in development as a healing sanctuary.

Temple House’s spacious and relaxing interior is supported by fabric hangings that create a tent/temple-like environment. The owners are yogic body-mind therapists in private practice and Temple House is sometimes used as a setting for our therapeutic work.

Temple House at Chakra Garden sleeps up to 4 people in two rooms. It sports new (2015) Serta queen bed and a comfy IKEA sofabed (top-quality futon). Sheets are 300+ thread count organic cotton. Towels are thick and plentiful (3 per person).

Please note that the queen bed is in the same room as the kitchenette and bathroom bathroom access.

A new mini-split HVAC keeps the space at a comfortable temperature throughout the year. There is Wi-Fi for your connection convenience.

Entry to Temple House is via the Garden Gate into the back yard. The ground and lighting can be uneven. Parking is in our 3-space driveway or safely at curbside.

Please be aware that we love dogs, but cannot accept your canine companion as a guest.

We can successfully accommodate groups up to 10 people in a variety of housing options. Please contact Candace for more information about group stays.

We also have a studio house that sleeps four people available at Chakra Garden. Please see our VRBO listing for details: Lhasa House (#457370). And a forest retreat property 17 miles northwest of Ashland that sleeps up to 8 people in 1050 square feet on 60 acres of woodland: Homestead Woodland Cottage (#590401)

Temple House at Chakra Garden is located 4 blocks north of Downtown Plaza, the heart of Ashland. From this hub, everything you need for entertainment, dining, and shopping is around you.

Temple House is around the corner and almost across the street from a south-bound Ashland/Medford bus stop and a block north of Ashland’s Youth Hostel.

Ashland’s Natural Food Coop is a beautiful 5-block neighborhood stroll through the historic Skidmore Academy District. Food options are nearby: the Breadboard Restaurant for breakfast/lunch and Big Al’s Diner for lunch/diner are 2 & 1 block north, and we’ve a Minute Market 1 block south.

Temple House at Chakra Garden is also just 2-blocks up the street from the Kagyu Sukha Choling Center for the Practice of Tibetan Buddhism, 3-blocks from Ashland Institute of Massage Therapy (AIM), and 4-blocks from the United Bicycle Institute.

Why Candace Cave chose Ashland

We purchased this property because of its versatility, history, and location to downtown Ashland. The main house is a vintage 2-story (1884 – the Payne-Penter House), a signature building as one nears Ashland’s downtown plaza, distinguished by the upstairs stained-glass window. There were two older out-buildings (“Temple House” is one and “Lhasa House” VRBO#457370 is the other) that we changed from empty shells to havens of modern comfort. We dream of the large, formerly empty back yard as a garden sanctuary for healing body, mind and spirit and that is an on-going project you are welcome to enjoy during your visit. You’ll discover all the fittings and furnishings in Temple House are brand new.

What makes this cottage unique

The setting at Chakra Garden is beautiful and we make all of the garden available as a healing sanctuary for your peaceful stay in the unique community of Ashland. We are an easy 10-minute walk to the heart of downtown Ashland, Lithia Park and OSF. We are experienced therapeutic healing practitioners. We offer many services to compliment your Ashland visit including bodywork, meditation or yoga, counseling, sex therapy and Tantra education. Please learn more at our property's home site

Relaxing and peaceful, clean, close to everything

  • 4 of 5

Interesting layout that provides safe and peaceful feel. Perfect for cozy evenings, tea in the garden, and good conversation. Not an ideal place for working on the computer, but that was defeating the point of "vacation"... plus there are plenty of coffee and tea shops nearby. Kitchenette was stocked for light fare. The hosts were thoughtful with coffee, tea, half and half and snacks.

Temple House was very comfortable. Maybe it was the time of year but the gardens looked liked they

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Temple House! Very comfortable and convenient. The porch light was a little confusing. Labels on the light switches would be helpful. Could there be a better way to dry the towels after a shower? They don't seem to dry out and become musty smelling. Thank for you hospitality.

Owner's Response: Hello Pam We are glad you enjoyed your stay in Temple House. We will certainly look into the problem with the musty towels. No one has said anything about that before, and we apologize. I know Zeb brought you more towels and I hope that solved the issue. We have an appointment next week with the electrician to repair the front porch light, so that shouldn't be a problem again. We will consider labeling the other switches, as one of them is in a different room from the light itself (it's an old building - we had to work with what we had). We would be delighted to host your return stay at Chakra Garden.

Loved it again this year...

  • 5 of 5

During many annual visits for OSF we've stayed in a variety of different lodgings -- most good-enough. However, when we stayed in Temple House in 2016, we knew we'd finally found "the one." To begin with, there's off-street parking. Of course, as others have mentioned, it's a mere 10-15 minute stroll into town, so we didn't use the car except for a trip into Medford and to the trail head for our hike on the Pacific Crest Trail.

This roomy, nicely-decorated space is quiet, peaceful and feels very private. The kitchen set-up worked for fine us, though we didn't try to cook dinners there. (We used the microwave a bit, but we didn't try the convection oven at all.) A hot-plate might be a good addition for, say, making pasta, but we got along fine without one.

Funny thing -- while I didn't have any particular memory concerning the bed from our 2016 stay, this year -- OMG -- I found it incredibly comfortable. We both slept well, but I REALLY slept well! Also having extra bedding -- and lots of towels -- was very thoughtful. (By the way, a 2015 reviewer mentioned the lack of bathroom sink, but by our visit in 2016, a small one had been installed.)

Finally, we found the owners to be extremely accessible and responsive concerning any questions we had. They clearly love their property and enjoy sharing it. It was definitely a joy to stay here.

Owner's Response: We are delighted you and Lydia again enjoyed your stay in Temple House at Chakra Garden of Ashland. We hope you return to us again next year. BTW - the bed was new last year, not long before your first visit, so yes it is the same bed. We've slept in it too, and also find it very comfortable. And just a note that the cottage has an electric frying pan, which can cook may foods, and we also supply a hot plate with sauce pan upon request. Although not really equipped for elaborate meals, we've used the kitchenette in the Temple to reheat a roast chicken from the food coop and prepare vegetable side dishes to accompany it. We look forward with pleasure to your return visit.

Peaceful space in good location walking distance to downtown

  • 4 of 5

Nice cottage with peaceful décor and functional layout. Private. Very comfortable beds and bedding (both main bed and pull out futon). Responsive host. Walking distance to downtown (about 10 minutes to OSF). Ample parking. Small but functional bathroom. Lots of towels and extra comforters. We had two young kids with us and they thought it was a really cool space.

Only negative at all was the kitchenette--no stove or hot plate (which it probably says in the ad but I forgot) and the microwave kept shorting out the electrical when we tried to use it. Not a huge deal, just something to know.

Overall, we really liked it. We go to Ashland every year and this was definitely one of our favorite places that we've stayed.

Temple House is an easy walk to downtown Ashland, the Shakespeare Festival, and most of our village's other attractions. Although Chakra Garden is located near an artery road, strolling along the alley at the foot of our property leads you into a gentle neighborhood with well-kept houses built early in the 20th century. We're an easy bike ride to Bear Creek Greenway and our property supports cycling - we even have a couple of bikes you might be able to us.

Temple House is on the grounds of an historic Ashland home and it's here that we've established a private healing center. Our Chakra Gardens are in development and available for your enjoyment - 2015 promises lots of color showing itself on our grounds. We are experienced therapeutic healing practitioners and offer many services to compliment your Ashland visit including bodywork, meditation or yoga, and counseling.
