About Donna Derrien

After growing up at this beach house, I now live 10 minutes north. We love to spend time here year-round, and especially have fun with the swim float in summer. Renting the house to select vacationers helps pay the taxes and still enjoy our own getaways here.

I have taken several years to paint, replace appliances and fixtures, and fill the house with everything you need for a cozy getaway. You will find comfortable furniture (I have a sturdy coffee table in the living room chosen specifically to allow you to put your feet up), very comfortable beds, ketchup and mustard in the frig, a well-stocked spice rack, several kinds of vinegar, an unbreakable garlic press, cheese grater, salad spinner, knife sharpener, Thermos (2), roasting pan, assorted teas, and even a share cupboard with birthday candles, extra cutlery, etc.

Donna Derrien purchased this house in 1974

Why Donna Derrien chose Comox Valley

Unlimited opportunities for wildlife watching, kayaking, walking, cycling and running trails, relaxation and quiet reading. Easy access to excellent dining, two spas, Mount Washington Alpine Resort, several golf courses, local galleries and museums.

What makes this house unique

Guests in summer 2013 called the living room window 'our 10-foot-wide TV' as there was constant wildlife activity.

Old pilings in the intertidal zone are a magnet for all kinds of birds, especially cormorants drying their wings in winter, and a growing colony of purple martins in summer.

Two eagles, Helen and Harry, sit in their favorite perches on the property while watching over their domain.

There is a public boat launch about 3 minutes south.

The (seasonal) swim float is a great summer destination! The surface is rubber playroom flooring, and the ladder allows you to climb aboard easily.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The weather was: Rained a bit at the beginning but then the weather was so nice and sunny the rest of the time.

Favorite Adventures: Going to the Royston Shipwrecks, hiking on the beach, seeing the seals and the sea lions swimming out front! Admiring the beautiful scenery.

The view from the house was so amazing to wake up to every day - we'll miss it a lot. Also, we loved watching the birds on the old pilings outside and listening to the waves. it's so peaceful here.

Serenity plus!

This spacious home provided an ideal location for our family to spend a few days together. The well equipped kitchen and large dining table made eating in very enjoyable. 3 bedrooms offered lots of privacy. The fully finished basement and sunroom provided plenty of space for group activity and quiet times. The backyard with its ocean views, comfy chairs and firepit was a huge hit. Large windows along the oceanside of the house made wildlife viewing easy and filled the house with light. There were many great options for eating out nearby. Royston pub and Royston coffee shop were tasty finds. Launching paddleboards from the beach at the house, biking in Cumberland, shopping at I-Hos for a First Nations work of art, walking --all kept our family busy. Laundry facilities were a nice bonus.

The home was clean, comfortable and homey. This owner has thought of everything. The only thing we couldn't find were crab crackers but that didn't stop us from enjoying a dinner of crabs from Portuguese Joe's. We hope to return one day. Great value and amazing views! Pet friendly!

Owner's Response: OMG, crab crackers! I will be getting a set of those today, so that won't happen again. I do like to make sure that all the little details are taken care of so that you can just enjoy your stay and visit with friends and family. So glad you all had a good time. Cheers, Donna

Five stars for value and views

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Donna's house over the Labour Day weekend 2016. The house is exactly as described.

The location and views are much more impressive than the pictures on the site and those views from the kitchen, dining room table and the living room couch are just amazing. We enjoyed the outdoors during our stay and were able to kayak out to Tree Island on a beautiful Sunday. During our stay we saw otters, seals, sea lions (ten minutes paddling south) eagles and the resident Monty the heron. The property has so many places to sit outside and we were able to have a campfire in the evening right by the water.

Beds are comfortable and the kitchen, although quite old, is really well equipped for a vacation rental. It was a good kitchen to prepare meals in.

I hope we can return next year.

Fantastic location and view, space for the whole family

  • 5 of 5

The owner of this place has thought of everything. Lots of room for extended family and endless fun for our grandchildren. Due to the nature of our stay, we unfortunately didn't spend enough time enjoying everything this place has to offer. When we return to the island, we will definitely stay here again, only change is that we would stay longer!

All the comforts of staying with family without the crazy family

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful view, great yard, private, spacious, clean house with all the comforts (and more) of home! We're a family of 5 and we've stayed other places in the area but this was the best. It was great for our older kids and for the baby. The kids were thrilled watching the resident eagles, building homes for the crabs on the beach and roasting marshmallows in the beach bonfire. Plus the house was so clean and spacious. Even with 5 of us, we only used a third of the house! The house had everything that you could ask for. We plan to make it an annual visit. Thanks Donna for making our stay perfect.

Glorious location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Donna's place. The property location is fantastic for an island getaway. The views from the lounge replaces any TV nicely. The house was large enough for our 6 adults to have their own space. Donna communicated quickly and easily which made booking and greeting simple. We would love to come back again as we did not stay long enough.
