About RC Barnhart

Currently a network tech from Athens, OH. Grew up in the area and enjoy Burr Oak State Park.

RC Barnhart purchased this cabin in 2012

Why RC Barnhart chose Ohio

We resurrected this little cabin in the summer of 2012. We gutted it and upgraded the electric, plumbing, added a master bedroom and engineered a bonus loft space that gives the cabin a beautiful, open feeling. It's been a fun project and we are continually tweaking and upgrading.

My wife and I wanted our own cozy place to get away and thought while we are not using it we can let others enjoy the space. From the red oak mantle and hickory beams, to the cherry and walnut custom ladder up to the loft, I think there are elements in this cabin that can not be found at any other cabin. A lot of time, energy and love was put into building this home.

Lovely and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful getaway for my boyfriend and I. We spent a lot of time in the hot tub and cooking food. I loved that they supplied us with all our cookware needs. You don't have to pack pans or plates or stuff like tha , because they have everything. They have literally everything in the cabin that you could ever possibly need ( except for a cookie tray). It's an hour away from Hocking Hills, which wasn't so bad if you make one day trip out of it. It was nice to swim at the Burr Oak Lake because not as many people were there like at the Hocking location. It's also conveniently located close to a Kroger. They don't have a washer or dryer, so make sure you bring extra clothes. They don't have cable or satellite, so what we did was bring our computer and some cables to hook up to the TV and watch Netflix on. Actually, they might have cable and we just never figured it out. It was just me and my boyfriend in the cabin, which fit us just fine. I could imagine one or two others staying with us, but it might be a little small for six people, which is how many it can sleep. There's also a grill on the back patio that I don't think works anymore, but we just found a grill in the sunroom that we didn't get to try out before we left, so maybe that one works. All in all, I really can't say worse about this cabin. It was a fantastic experience and I would totally come back again. I love the rustic look to it. I just thought of something: the showerhead isn't very powerful. The water pressure is great, but maybe switching the showerhead would give better results. Everything's new in the cabin and I loved it so much. Again, thanks for the great memories.

Owner's Response: Thanks for staying with us! The gas grill does work, the propane was out and the replacement just needed to be connected :). Glad you had a good time and hope you make it back again soon! Thanks! Heather & RC

Successful Momcation!! We just needed a break

  • 4 of 5

My sister and I were looking to spend some quiet time away from our chaotic lives. The idea started as tent camping until we quickly realized we would need certain luxuries that this cabin perfectly accommodated! We thoroughly enjoyed the wifi, and A/C, along with all the little things we didn't have to pack because the cabin already had them.

We still battled a few spiders, but maintain it was way better than hiding in a tent. As a first time user of VRBO, the owners were amazingly helpful and the process was seamless. Deposit was returned promptly. Totally hoping life will allow another trip!

Owner's Response: Glad you had a relaxing time. Hard to keep the spiders completely out since we're in the woods :). Hope you can visit again soon! Thanks, Heather & RC

Excellent cabin in beautiful location!

Great location for hiking. Multiple trails close by. Cottage was exactly as described - very functional and a comfy couch! RC & Heather were very easy to work with, and dealt with my inability to use PayPal - thank you for that!

Winter Vacation-Winter Hiking

  • 5 of 5

We came to the area to enjoy the great winter hiking that is offered. The house is very cool and you can tell the owners have put time and love into the refurbishment of the place. Very small details have been attended to. The place was clean and linens were satisfactory. One room on the first floor with a big bed and then a second room with twin bunk beds. The other loft room is up a ladder and there's a double mattress up there. It overlooks the tv room so you can watch the tele from the loft. Kitchen is good for small meals and you can BBQ. I eat at the lodge. Back porch is great and in the morning you can hear the wildlife if you sit quietly out there. It is a private porch. The hot tub is not on the porch but on a platform located about 30 feet from the back door. Its kind of like a viewing platform that looks into the woods. However it was hot and very clean. The owners change the water for each guest which is nice and sanitary. Owners are just a call or text away if you need them but otherwise you will have privacy. I love this place and I recommend it just about anyone except the elderly, the handicapped, or tourists without a car. The rock stairs that lead to the house are beautiful but could be difficult for seniors or disabled. I highly recommend spending time at the Burr Oak Lodge for meals and the at the reservoir itself. In winter when snow and ice is present you must have AWD or 4x4 to get to this unit. Our friend who has a car and not an SUV with AWD had to be picked up at lodge. The hiking is first class in this area. The Burr Oak loop and the Wildcat Hollow Loop provide 40 miles of contiguous hiking. There is marinas to rent boats and good fishing too. You are also not to far from Athens which has many fine places. I do intend to return to this cabin as soon as possible.
