Pristine Lilac Hill includes 7 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms in three separate dwellings set high up on an 11 acre hilltop, surrounded by an 800 acre working farm. The property is centrally positioned within 1 mile of downtown Stowe and about 7 miles from Stowe Mountain Resort. Each of the 7 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 2 kitchens and both family rooms have recently been decorated and renovated. The living room is spacious with seating for 15 in front of a large central fireplace. The dining room features a wood cooking hearth/fireplace and corner cabinets. All first floor rooms are adorned with original hand hewed beams and the unique architecture of this 1827 farmhouse. Lilac Hill is perfect for family reunions or groups of 2-3 families to share. During the winter months there are hills for sledding, X-country and Snowmobiling trails, including the VAS (Vermont Association of Snowmobiles) trail system which passes about 100 yards from Lilac Hill and extends for hundreds of miles. The rolling terrain of our ridge top property features two ponds, tennis court and swimming pool spotted with apple trees and numerous gardens including 15 different species of Lilacs. 8 months of the year your mornings begin with cows grazing in the meadows, fish jumping and often large Audubon birds seen around the ponds. Many guests have suggested our house and property reminds them of an old Connecticut Country Estate. Stone wall lined gardens, terraced landscapes, cows and mountain landscapes make Lilac Hill the perfect family retreat during all four seasons. All aspects of Lilac Hill are fully restored and maintained. Lilac Hill was designed to provide the incredible outdoor life offered by the surrounding mountains of Stowe VT. No matter the season, we love our property and appreciate what it does to bring our large family closer together. We hope it does the same for you.

Now, with the addition of 9 grandchildren our family often comes together at our Lilac Hill and SugarMill properties to enjoy the beautiful surrounding mountains, waterfalls and ever changing weather found all around our property. Stowe provides our family with incredible 'Farm to Table' foods, competitive and challenging outdoor activities, many 'top rated' restaurants, diverse natural surroundings, and a world renowned Cultural Arts Center, In addition to the natural beauty of Stowe, we now believe Stowe has been completely restored to one of the most respected and complete resort offerings in the world. Stowe is back and we are thrilled to have chosen Stowe as our family retreat. Come and breathe what Stowe has for you.
Ward and Nancy Bitter purchased this Chateau / Country House in 2007
Why Ward and Nancy Bitter chose Morristown
We were exposed to this property by accident. We were on a one week vacation in Stowe and during a 'bad' snow day we decided to look at some houses for fun. When we came across Lilac Hill, we immediately knew the ice encased property was hiding something special from most 'viewers.' We picked up the resident family photo album and sat down to view the pictures for 1 hour. As designers we quickly realized that someone living at Lilac Hill had a master plan. One of them was a well know designer from Montreal, and we saw the results of her taste and care as she beautifully adorned interior rooms as well as how carefully landscaped and planted her numerous gardens had been.. Actually, I think once we saw the pictures of the cows grazing in all surrounding fields within view of most of the rooms in the main house we know that Lilac Hill was the farm we wanted to own without having to do all the heavy lifting of the actual farm work.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
Unique views, incredible landscape, close proximity to the center of Stowe and Mountain Road. One of the rare, centrally located, perfect "high" mountain view properties in Northern Vermont. It continues to be our family's personal, 4 season resort, while being located only minutes from the heart of Stowe. Restaurants, shops, special events, hiking, climbing, swimming, and of course some of the best skiing in the world. Lilac Hill and Stowe provides us with the best living, playing, and quality of life amenities most people only dream about. We are living our dreams and we feel blessed own it and to be able to share it with others.

Beautiful house, perfect for a group
We thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay at the Bitter's house. It is a beautiful location, up on a hill with nice views. The pool, pond, tennis court and lawn games gave plenty for our crew to do. The house itself is well appointed and easily holds a large group. We had 16 people in total, and were able to put the kids in the bunk room, and then plenty of bedrooms for adults that had nice queen / double beds. The house has a warm and welcoming feel. Would definitely stay here again!
Stowe Vermont has had a long and well documented positive impact on millions of people who have visited it over the past 200 years but what is happening now is unprecedented.
Stowe was always one of the premier, special places to visit in North America. However, what is going on is very special. It is no longer just another seasonal great place to be. It is now a growing and prosperous home to many new families. People of all ages, with children and without are coming to Stowe to get a taste of the "Farm to Table" and now the "Brewery to Glass" establishments that have almost double in the past 10 years. Things are happening "Up" Mountain (Stowe Resort) and "Down" (Stowe Village). I have heard it said that Stowe offers the "Best of the Best" 10 square miles of Mountains, Lakes, Rivers and Forests for bikers, hikers, skiers, climbers, swimmers, ballooners, flyers and just those who like to sit back and chill.
This is why we came to Stowe and purchased the Lilac Hill Estate. It was what we wanted to offer and provide for our loved ones and it was our way to bring all members of our family together as often as possible. We love our property and as guests we are thrilled that our guests find happiness in our wonderful Northern Vermont lifestyle. Thank you for staying with us. Ward and Nancy Bitter
Re: Amazing House for large families!!
We stayed at Lilac Hill for our wedding week and had the best time! We Had 12 Adults and 6 Children in total on the property. We all had plenty of space for everyone and we couldn't have been happier! The house is beautifully decorated. We loved hanging with all the family in the living room with a roaring fire. The kitchen is very well equipped and we cooked up a storm! I did a lot of research on family houses in Stowe and Lilac hill is the best one out there, hands down! The Bitter's are amazing host, they helped us with all our needs and we quick to answer all our calls.
Can't say enough good things!!
Thanks again, Ward and Nancy!
Sarah Bune and her entire Bune family were special. They showed wonderful appreciation for our home and cared for it accordingly. It was like having our own family spending the week at LH. This is why we rent out our home with confidence through VRBO!
Lilac Hill is truly deserving of a five star rating. From the endless monogrammed towels, sumptuous bedding, comfortable and inviting spaces for gathering, to the exquisitely equipped kitchen, you will feel pampered and pleased. We were a group of four couples enjoying the fall foliage, reconnecting and making new memories. Our host Ward, was very gracious and helpful, but never interfered. He gave us wonderful suggestions for hikes and restaurants. We could not have been more pleased, Lilac Hill is quite special, very private with acres of beautiful spaces, but walking distance to town. We are all hoping to return soon!
Country Relaxation and Adventure
Lilac Hill is an idyllic country estate with charm and class. Plenty to do with the pool, pond and tennis court, rolling lawns and perfect kitchen. Only minutes to all the action in Stowe, but no need to leave the property if relaxation is your first choice. Owner is very responsive and accommodating.
My wife and I had our wedding up on this estate, it was epic, it was a winter wonderland and the owners were so accommodating it was truly amazing. I am really pushing my cousin to get married up here in the fall or at least come up after the wedding.
I used this house for a summer golf trip--not only was it in great shape, but it is in a beautiful location, and a great piece of land. The lake and pool was definitely a plus for the hot summer days. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!
Thank you for taking the time to respond. We are new to the home rental business and wish to avoid some of the caveats that so many home renters experience. We love our property (Lilac Hill) in Stowe and wish to protect it by being careful and selective as possible. This Fall, we are making additional upgrades to the facilities and interior design of some of the rooms.
Thank you again for being such considerate guests this summer!
