Location is the key to this apartment. It met all our basic needs and was a great home base for venturing out to all the places we wanting to see in Boston. Had good interactions with the owners. If you stay, you must grab breakfast at My Cousin's Place downstairs.
This apartment was excellent for the price we paid. It was not fancy but had everything we needed. It was close to 2 T stops, and the neighborhood was safe. The owners were responsive to any questions, and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. We will definitely book here again.
Pros: Location! Close to everything and easy to find.
Linens clean and seemed new
Cons: Needs a good scrub down and some upkeep.
We arrived and found the shower full of mold, both pink and black. I immediately called the contact number in the book and was rudely told to e mail the owner. Explained I could not do that and asked them to pass on that I needed a call back. I also called the cleaning company (number provided in book) and left a message. They did not return the call. (there was a little note in the info book on how to leave a tip for the cleaning crew) The owner did call back and she told me that it was not mold, just old grout and it was an old building. She did offer to give us a small credit which I thanked her for. (it was very small considering the mold, and it was mold not old grout) I asked to be moved to another property and she said they had no openings. With no way to get our money back we had to stay.
We moved the couch to see the TV better and thank goodness I found a broom to sweep the floor, it was covered in dust and dirt. Sitting on the couch we could even see dirt on the floor, never walked on floor without socks on as a result. Kitchen counter had worn spots and half the light bulbs in the unit were either missing our burned out. In the bathroom was also half full bottles of shampoo etc along with half tubes of toothpaste.
Being the basement property it was a bit stuffy so I tried to find a window to open to let in some fresh air - can not open the windows (the window air conditioner had mold in it also). Did find one picture covering a broken window.
The stairs and hall way to get to the basement look like they have not been cleaned in a year. I do realize this is an old building, however, some upkeep and paint would be helpful. I now know why there were no pictures of the unit we were offered when we booked it last Feb.
I emailed the owner the day before we were to check out listing what should be corrected in the unit, no response.
From the other reviews on line I must say they must have stayed in the other unit in the building and not the one we were put in.
Horrible conditions and I would not have stayed if I could have gotten my money back - could not afford to throw away money.
The old saying is true - You get what you pay for! We didn't pay much by Boston standards and what we got was not good. I gave it a 2 star because the location is awesome - walking distance to so many historical places and amazing resturants. That said, there are also nicer accommodations in the area. This was our first trip to Boston, so lesson learned. We have rented other places on this site and have always had good luck..not this time. Our adventures sightseeing and eating in Boston were amazing. Next trip we will research other places to stay and avoid anything managed by Hodan Properties!!!
Here are the cons:
1. Arrived at 2 amTuesday , maintenance guy knocked on door at 8am to replace the A/C and install missing smoke detectors. Nobody told us about this repair work which should of been done prior to our arrival.
2. Apt 1F is small, stuffed with furniture, musty smelling, hair on bedspread, 3 old towels provided. The pictures on website are very deceiving.
3. A/C unit is right over bed and blows on your head all night
4. Surrounding Apts had 20 yr olds that partied into the night, Loud music, slamming doors , Screaming and Yelling four out of our 6 nights
5. Had to cut stay by 2 nights due to Flooding from Brazos River in Texas. Our house is located in a neighborhood next to river. I sent the woman named Jan that I made reservations thru two emails letting her know that we were leaving and she never responded. Before our stay, she responded to every email I sent. I finally called the management company and told them our situation and was told since we didn't give notice, we were out of luck for a refund or credit on unused days. I told them that Mother Nature didn't give us a notice???
Excellent location. Perfect for a short stay in Boston, close to everything and had everything that was needed to make this a great trip - thank you.
Thanks for making our 1st trip to Boston even better! We had no idea how close we would be to everything & the North End was just beautiful! All of our questions were answered quickly & your instructions were perfect! We landed at Logan & took a shuttle bus (watch for #66) drops you off right at the water taxi dock. Rowes water taxi dropped us off a block from the apartment on Battery & we were able to store our luggage and take off sight-seeing even though we arrived before check-in! Be prepared to carry them down a flight of stairs to closet. No car needed, we walked everywhere. We never felt unsafe and we walked miles! Took a taxi once & the T to Fenway. The building is old but well maintained. We literally used the apt. to shower & sleep, so why spend big bucks? The bed was super comfortable & the apt. was clean. We hit the 7-11 for bottled water & kept it in the fridge. I loved the plug ins near the bed, hung clothes in the closet & there was even an umbrella if it rained! :) We were glad to leave on a Saturday though because by Thursday, the streets were starting to fill up & a Friday night party above us kept me awake, but no worries! We had a blast! A short walk to the corner to Hanover St. was all it took to know that I loved Boston, and it just kept getting better. I can't count the times I said, "This place is amazing!" So much to see & all steps away! St. Stephens, Paul Revere's home, North Church, Mike's Pastry, Bova's Bakery, Regina's Pizza, Faneuil Hall, the Aquarium, the harbor, etc. We had the best Italian food in the world at Giacomo's & my husband finally got his lobster at the Chart House. We hated to leave, but we know we will return! Until then, thanks for a great place to stay!
