If you have reached this site you probably already know about Lake Atitlan.
Jaibalito is a small Mayan village of about 1200 people and the last village that has no roads or mechanized vehicles. It is about a 20 minute boat ride from the public dock in Panajachel to the public dock in Jaibalito which is about 30 yards down the shore.
The Casita is a 700 square foot studio style cabin that sits behind my main house on a 2 acre fenced and gated compound right on the water. It has Directv from the US with 600 channels, full refrigerator, gas stove and oven, washer and dryer, WiFi, wraparound screened in porch with hammocks
It also has two water systems, a backup generator, 30 gallon electric hot water heater and all kitchen supplies plus linens.
I have lived in Jaibalito for 15 years and bought this compound in 2004. The casita was originally used by my two boys but they are off to college and then I had a retired couple rent it for two years.
They moved last month so I am trying to rent it again. Although I am looking for a long term renter, I will rent it for a minimum of 5 days to 1-2 people.
Gary Hagan purchased this cabin in 2004
Just look at it.
Lake front, serenity, safety but with all the modern conveniences.
My son and I had a wonderful week at this casita. The location is its best part. Everyhting there that you could possibly need, including wifi, laundry, TV, and extremely helpful staff. Another important aspect that makes this location so good is that it's close to the center of the village, BUT, just far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet from the ever-present barking dogs. Thanks Gary.
This place was perfect for our 6 days in Lake Atitlan. We had EVERYTHING we could need. Our host Gary was very friendly and helpful. He has lived on the lake nearly 20 years therefore is extremely knowledgeable about the area. The grounds are extremely beautiful and well kept. We spent hours in the hammocks outside our cabin. We believe this area of the lake has the best views (volcanoes) and cleanest water to swim in.
-There are just a few restaurants in Jaibalito, from the more upscale (Casa Del Mundo & Ven Aca) to the backpacker-priced but still good food (Posada Jaibalito). Ven Aca has a good happy hour starting at 3:30PM, excellent food, and a infinity pool with amazing views. Casa Del Mundo has a 5 course dinner which I highly recommend for at least one night, its a bit pricier but the food was gourmet quality, you must book with them in advance. Lastly the cabin does have everything needed to cook for oneself if you're into that (stove, microwave, fridge, filtered water, etc) but in that case you'd most likely want to buy the majority of the food in one of the larger towns.
-Reasonably priced kayaks rentals are available from Casa Del Mundo and stand-up paddle boards from Los Elementos Kayak and Adventure Center in Santa Cruz La Laguna which is a 5 minute boat ride or a 35 minute easy and safe hike.
-You can swim right off one of the many docks in front of Gary's property. Nearby Casa Del Mundo also has a great swimming and lounging area (hammocks/etc) down by the water to hang out at, read a book, etc.. The friendly staff there can help you book other tours such as horseback riding, volcano hikes, etc (prices were very reasonable as we shopped around when we were in some of the larger towns).
Overall, I couldn't recommend this place more! Thank you Gary for being such a wonderful host! We hope to be back soon :)

I was looking for a comfortable place as an introduction to Guatemala and Lake Atitlan for my first visit. The cabin has all the comforts of home plus a welcoming American host; great security and the main house and gardens are right on the lake for viewing the volcanoes. A wonderful German restaurant/hostel is close by, serving as a social center for expats in the community. Thanks, Gary, for the friendliness of your family during my stay.
I highly recommend this listing and have nothing but positive things to say about our whole experience. We originally planned on staying 5 nights, but loved it so much we added an extra 2!
The guest house is in the backyard of a gorgeous lakefront property. The yard is huge, beautiful and well maintained. The guest house had everything we needed, was comfortable and completely safe. Gary was more than accommodating, letting us use the hot tub, taking us for a ride in his boat, and giving us full use of his dock and yard! We felt very comfortable and safe here. The security around the property was excellent, as were Gary's dogs who kept watch day and night. We got internet in all spots of the house and enjoyed the satellite TV at night.
Jaibalito is a tiny town, with not much to do, but was perfect for what we were looking for.
Definitely stay here, you will love it!
This was the perfect get away for myself and my husband. The cabin was a simple, no frills, perfectly laid back accommodation on a gorgeous, well kept, safe property. Directly on the lake and in the beautiful surroundings of jaibalito, we enjoyed everything from peace and quiet to wild happy hour at Ven Aca (a pool lounge/bar within walking distance). This was the perfect solution for anything we wanted. Gary, the host, was absolutely awesome! We felt right at home the entire time! Thanks again Gary!!
We were really happy to find this little place - it had everything my partner and I needed, double bed, full kitchen, movies in the evenings, beautiful quiet spots to sit and enjoy the property, direct access to the lake out front, safe, comfortable and clean. Really enjoyed it.
Almost all major facilities are located in Panajchel a 20 minute boat ride away. Jaibalito dose have small tiendas, a small vegetable market and 4 restaurants within a few minutes walk.
