I am the great granddaughter of Gus and Anna Spitzmiller who settled here in the late 1800's. Gus came to this area to mine Silver at Lulu City with others like the famous Squeeky Bob Wheeler. He eventually settled down and brought his wife Anna to Grand Lake and became the first Master Plumber in Grand County. Anna had the first indoor running water in the County. My grandmother, Barbara Lorens married Gordon Spitzmiller (Gus's son) and they joined their plumbing business with grandma's dairy farm--on what is now Shadow Mtn. Lake. Eventually Shadow Mtn Reservoir was made, and so, we have property all along the river to the lake.
tracee purchased this Cabin in 1940
Why tracee chose Grand Lake
This is one of 3 cabins, plus a family home, I own in Grand Lake. This is the 1 bedroom, and is the smallest of the units, but still about 900 sq feet. All my cabins are BIG. It has been fully renovated on the inside, and many find it so cozy and romantic that they call it the 'Love Shack'. We also have a 2/1 vrbo # 454309, and a 3/1 Homeaway # 3564480. Or if you have a big group and want to splurge, you can rent our family home, vrbo # 490482.
What makes this Cabin unique
Very private and gorgeous property with easy access on and off the main road and only 2 miles to the village of Grand lake. You can canoe in the wildlife area from our meadow ( as the whole property is surrounded on 3-sides by the Colo. river) in the Summer or snowmobile right across the lake to town and the trails in the Winter.

Charming getaway to revive the soul!
What a beautiful place to stay. Romantic, relaxing, full of adventure at your fingertips if you choose, or just snuggle in by the fire and take in the wilderness through the large windows.
We love this place and the story behind the owner - which is in the guest book.
You are so kind. Thanks!
Nice cabin with a good location, right on the water and a short drive to Grand Lake or Granby.
The cabin is well maintained and perfectly sized for a couple (rustic romantic) or perhaps a couple with a small child (the day bed is too small for anyone of any size to sleep.) It was just the two of us, so it was just what we needed/wanted.
We visited in mid-June, during a hot spell. The cabin only has three windows that open (one in the bathroom) and only one window has a screen. While the other cabins on the property have porches, the Aunt Ann cottage does not, so keeping cool during the day involved going into the National Park. It seems better designed for winter (heaters and a wood stove) than summer use.
Rocky Mountain National Park, and all it offers, is just minutes away, as is National Forest land. We came for the quiet, the views and the hiking - all of which are great. What we didn't expect - but LOVED - was the canoeing.
While staying at the cottage, you are right on Shadow Mountain Lake, where the Colorado River enters the lake. The owners provide canoes, which we used in the mornings (in the calm, cool and quiet hours) to paddle around the nearby islands watching the osprey, ducks, white pelicans, deer and otter.
The cabin is perfectly functional and clean with all the necessary amenities. The caretaker, Caitie, was friendly, helpful & responsive. We found it to be a great base for day trips in the surrounding area, which has a LOT to offer outdoors.
We find people love it--generally--both summer and winter. Of course, you can't use our free canoes in the winter, as the river freezes over--the lake too.
But lots of people come up and snowmobile in the winter--and then canoes and kayak and the National park--in the Summer.
Come back and see us any time. Oh--and yes--the 2 and 3 bedrooms have decks and sit river front. They are VRBO 3564480 and VRBO 454309. We also have a home where the river enters the lake and it is 490482. This little 1 bedroom is our least expensive cabin, but no deck--sorry. Maybe someday we can add one.
Cozy, quaint cabin. Peaceful
The cabin was cozy, peaceful and clean with a great view. Equipped with everything you needed. Great location. Amenities within a few miles from the cabin. It did get a little warm at night. I might suggest putting screens on the windows in order to open the windows to feel the cool breeze but keep the bugs out. I would stay here again if I am in the area.
Thank you and we hope to have you back soon.
Convenience, Clean, and Canoes!
This cabin was so clean, up-to-date with all the things we needed for a comfortable stay. It is conveniently located to the Rocky Mountain National Park and the town of Grand Lake. The use of the canoes put this location over the top for us!!! Great memories for our 25th wedding anniversary!
Thank you so very much. And Happy belated Anniversary.
Love Shack cabin!!
My husband and I were relaxing for our anniversary. The cabin is absolutely beautiful inside. The kitchen was completely stocked with everything we needed. There were games for us to play and the fireplace in the bedroom area was divine. The weather was a little rainy one evening and the warmth from the fire was so nice. We will definitely recommend the little “love shack” to our friends!
Thank you very much. We are glad you found us and enjoyed your stay.
In 6 weeks or so the canoes will be out and the river open and they are included in your rental rate.
Quaint, Quiet getaway!
This cabin was so homey! My best friend and I had a blast using this as our home-base while we enjoyed escaping our respective cities! Loved having the wood stove burning and watching for wildlife outside the huge windows!
Will definitely be returning in the summer!
Thank you so very much, and we are glad you enjoyed our cabin.
Please come back this summer. In the summer we have canoes and kayaks included, as well as, the firewood.
We are on the West border of Rocky mountain National park.
