Rental is the entire island! Howard Is. is a two acre privately owned island, located a mile north of Drummond Is. in Potagannissing Bay, Lake Huron. It is one of hundreds of privately owned Islands in the bay. Howard Is. is heavily wooded with Cedar trees. It offers serene beauty and a kind of relaxation you will never experience in your life. To watch sunsets and sunrises you simply turn your chair around.
To get to Howard Is., you leave by boat from The Yacht Haven marina and boat north ( about a mile) to tie up to the lazy L dock at Howard Is. Boat rentals are available at the marina; 906 493-5232. Having your own boat is a plus. (First time renters would meet me at the marina for all the particulars.) This is a seasonal vacation spot and is open from mid May thru September.
The island has two charming log cabins, a boat house or garage and an out-house. ( Don't be alarmed), the outhouse is very clean, fun and boast a crystal chandelier.) The main cabin has two bedrooms (sleeps six) and a bath area with shower and sink. It has a very complete kitchen and comfortable living room. Large windows enhance lake views. The smaller cabin, Hide-a-Way, has an enclosed porch that leads into a very adorable comfortable sitting area with fireplace. It is complete with a sofa sleeper and a loft that holds two small beds. Both cabins have knotty knotty pine interiors, slate fireplaces and filled with vintage log furniture. Wood is provided for the fireplaces and the two bonfire pits.
Amenities include: a large dock, a picnic table on a large deck, totem pole, hammock, glorious views, wild life and star gazing.
I am a Northern Michigan girl, and live in Traverse City. One of of things I can't live without is the woods and water.
Susan Hadley purchased this cabin in 1988
I saw this island for sale many years ago while boating in the North Channel. I never had a deep desire to own an island, but it had such special beauty, I decided to buy it. It holds so many memories for me, my friends and my children. Twenty years ago, my daughter and her college friends made paths out of rocks. The rocks have settled in the earth and are one with nature, just like life's memories.
We love this place! And how many people can actually brag about vacationing on an entire island by themselves? Susan's cabin and grounds were very clean and very comfortable. We had a well-equipped kitchen with everything you need to cook, grill, or bake your favorite dishes. Although we were recommended to visit a couple of restaurants on Drummond Island, we never made the trek across we stayed only at this magical place! We spent our days fishing and sight-seeing, relaxing, and enjoyed a few fun games of Ladder Ball. And, at night, when the skies allowed we gazed up at the stars and watched for UFO's (just kidding but we did see plenty of shooting stars and the occasional satellite)
Charles, the local caretaker, was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and we appreciated his assistance with getting us oriented with the island.
We were so fortunate to have been able to experience this unforgettable adventure and we hope to have the opportunity to visit Howard Island again.
The Island was incredible! Beautiful sunsets on the jetty, the call of the loon, places to explore, living in harmony with nature. S'mores over a bonfire, fishing all morning, boating adventures. Well stocked kitchen, ample linens, clean, comfortable bedding, lovely main home and second mini house (two full beds in loft---nicer than described). Lovely decor, feels like home. Owner provided everything we could possibly need (paper goods, extra coats, marshmallow sticks, griddle, you name it!)
Pictures don't capture this island paradise. We will return!
My family has spent significant portions of the last 13 summers on Howard Island and the experience is almost indescribable. From sunrise to sunset—both of which typically are wondrous—we are fishing, waterskiing, tubing, kayaking, and otherwise enjoying the water. We keep two boats at the Yacht Haven year-round, but rental boats can be easily arranged. For fishing enthusiasts, the waters surrounding Howard offer smallmouth, perch, pike, walleye, and salmon (Detour Pass). When the rains occasionally come, we either hunker down in the main cabin in front of a fire with cards or a board game, or head over to Drummond for lunch and shopping. Our children have grown up on Howard and we cannot imagine a summer without visits to this very special place.
My sisters & I rented Howard Island and had such an wonderful time, we rented it again! Incredible sunrises and sunsets; fishing, boating and exploring Drummond Island. Our fears about using an outhouse were unfounded, it was so quaint and charming. At Yacht Haven we rented our boat and the staff there were so friendly and accommodating, we can hardly wait to visit again! (As a bonus, we had great cell phone service out there in the middle of Lake Huron!)
Fishing off the dock is the best. It is up and down, catching pan fish. Perch is best caught in the early mornings. I have caught Pike and Walleye there too. You must have a fishing license, even to fish on the dock. Swimming is good at the end of dock too.
You will see deer, as they swim from Is. to Is. The cry of the loons add to the tranquility. Bald Eagles are a common sight. The stars and the Northern Lights are something to behold. Views of sister Islands and glistening water is at nature's best. Howard Is. is in the path of boats coming from Canada to clear customs at The Yacht Haven, which makes boat watching fun.
Most visitors, once they are on Howard Is., don't want to leave. But, if you do, Drummond Is., a mile away by boat, has a lot to offer. There is a bowling alley, golfing at The Rock, fine dinning at the BaySide Restaurant, ice cream and pizza places, and several restaurants and bars. The North Wood Bar has a band every Saturday night. The place to hike on Harbor Is.
This is a perfect honeymoon spot or a great place for families or friends. If you are looking to get away from it all, then this is the place for you.
It is a piece of Heaven!
